A program called Serviio  --  https://serviio.org/  -- useful for streaming video round the house.

There is a free version that works well enough for me to watch movies via LAN cables from the computer to the front room and the bedroom TV, without using USB stick.

????

Dunno about serviio, but I have Plex, and right now we are in Bangkok and my kids are watching a "Steven universe" episode stored on my Synology server at home in Buriram. Neat isn't?

My computer is in our computer room upstairs and the tv is in the living room ,dont think the wife would like a cable that long running along the landing all down stairs and across the dinning room to the living room ????

anywat as i said problem sorted ,using my old tv . our son has a nice curved screen tv to play his games on

Good you got it sorted

For future reference, it's sometimes easier to run cables round the outside of the house.

A couple of small holes in the window frames and you'r good to go.

Samsung has an app in the AppStore called “Plex”

This will scan your computer hard drive, where you have your avi files stored.

Most file creators are aware of the naming protocol, and Plex will catalogue your system and provide an amazing interface on your TV.

New files that you download on your computer will magically appear on your TV interface and you stream them over your WiFi. The transcoding and streaming is handled by your computer.

There is no need for a usb stick, No need for a android tv box or chrome stick - your TV is these things already.

Google YouTube “setting up plex” and you will see a multitude of tutorials. It’s not complicated at all.

Almost. You install Plex(nothing to do with Samsung) on your PC and install the App on the TV.

Do you use the Download Station with that?

redownload and get another file. easiest.

play it from an old or cheap laptop with hdmi to tv.

reencode it with handbrake, usually mkv will work.

My system cannot  smoothly play 1080p HEVC, and the only decent torrent for HBO'S Rome was in that format, so I converted it to 720p mkv. The files played flawlessly, and the quality was great.

58.1 GB?? I think I'll give that one a miss for now.

Yup, sorry it was kinda early. I was trying to explain that the app is downloadable from the App Store on the TV, that’s maintained by Samsung right?

No, you don’t - If you have a Synology NAS you can use the native DS Video app on your NAS and forward the port so it’s accessible from outside, or you can just run Plex on the NAS and tablet and avoid playing around with your router settings.

My computer is down stairs in a two story concrete house and my TV is upstairs in my bedroom.  Chromecast works flawlessly and I use a free program to "que" what I want to cast (works with PC and Android)

Installed Plex on my PC but it won't open. Pretty common problem with Win 10 apparently because of one of the upgrades. Just bought a new Android TV so was looking forward to using Plex.
