VIDEO: Shocking moment fishing trawler collides with Koh Chang ferry

A video posted online showed the moment when a large fishing trawler collided with the Koh Chang car and passenger ferry on its way from the island to Laem Ngop on the mainland.

One foreign passenger among the tourists who witnessed the incident can be heard to swear.

The fishing trawler comes to a stop after side swiping the back of the ferry. Only late evasive action seemed to avert a potential disaster.

The incident happened yesterday in the late afternoon.

The local harbor master will meet the captains and crew of both vessels today to investigate what happened.

The footage was posted online by Apichart Chart.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Apparently the skipper has woken up just in time to avoid major damages, lucky guy.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. I see stupidity way worse than this on the roads every day. Simply an adaption from owning the road to owning the water, with little to no regard for anyone else.

Doesn't look like anyone on the fishing boat reacted at all, even after it hit the ferry !!!

Just lucky it didn't get hit by the bow of the ferry, otherwise it would have been much worse...

Akin to driving a Honda Wave into the side of a 10 wheel truck... Trucks don't give way to Honda Waves, ferries don't give way to fishing boats..

Might is right ????

My impression is that the trawler, right at the beginning of the video, gets aware and steers the wheel, just in time to avoid wrecking badly the boat against the ferry.

The sea is just not big enough here ????

The fishing boat's helmsman planned to go astern of the ferry, but obviously misjudged the respective speeds. He does take avoiding action at the last moment. At 12 secs you can see the boat heal over into a turn.

Actually, the fishing boat, being to the starboard (that's the right) of the ferry did, in fact have right of way. According to the 'rules for the avoidance of collisions at sea' it was the ferry that should have taken avoiding action. But as pointed out elsewhere, just like the roads, 'might is right'.

Did you really watch the video? The 'Fishing boat' was on a direct straight line course to hit the side of the ferry which was travelling in a straight line. IF the captain of the fishing boat had seen the ferry he would surely have taken evasive action much much sooner, but he did not. Probably asleep or drunk or both!!!

who will both argue right of way, wai, and go about their business

For me, what's shocking about this incident was the very minor outcome.

Usually these things end up in tragedy.

It is this level of fvckw!ttery which absolutely frightens me.

Idiots like this drive lorrys, pickups, delivery vehicles.

Then we have the ‘prettys’ in their hello-kittle monogramed Vios or Jazz in a perpetual state of Line Messaging.

The we have the entitled ‘I stop for no-one’ and tail-gate like a rhino-on-heat in their Camrys and Fortuna’s

And of course we have the ‘can do no wrong I have right of way’ Merc & BMW’s...

Thats most of the stereotypes and generalisations covered - but these stereotypes are borne somewhere and not wholly inaccurate.

The level of stupidity, carelessness, lack of consequence and complete ignorance of the most basic of safety standards is a facet in every level of transport and society. It really is so disappointing that Thailand is unable to mature from its damning attitude towards basic safety measures.

and the white center line was missing, the fishing boat was a Tesla and driving on the left and the ferry took his right of way.

In any case, the guy at the helm must not have known that on the high seas, priority on the right prevails; therefore wrong fishing boat
