RIP to all the victims.

Thailand need to change their weapon laws after this horrible killing spree.   A soldier have access to advanced weapons and ammo and nobody cares?  Someone is responsible, do the right thing Thailand to prevent this from happening again. .

Hopefully...

Better chance in Thailand as politicians don't get kick backs from an organisation representing gun manufacturers funded by gun owners...

Thais I spoke to were sympathetic towards him. They don't see things the way whitey does.

3 killings were for revenge.

As to the rest of the victims, in for a penny in for a pound right? Didn't matter after the first three as the consequences to him are ultimately the same.

He said he went on the rampage to start a war. Most likely meaning some sort of uprising against the rich elites.

All clearly stated on his Facebook.

"Most likely meaning some sort of uprising against the rich elites".

Did I miss something or do you have super CSI powers to make this assumption.

If your assumption is correct I'd sort of think he would go after the rich elites rather than random shootings. But I have no idea. I just rely on facts from real news authorities and make no assumptions.

Never a dull moment in this Land.

Just wondering why they did not throw some tear gas down the air handling unit; would have gotten that sick creep out of the Terminal in no time with possibly considerable less loss of innocent lives.

In the USA, the military regulations expressly prohibit businesses between subordinates.  Out of curiosity do any such regulations exist in Thailand?  Are military, policies, directives, documented and available?

A video posted on Facebook purported to show the moment a man who went on a rampage at a shopping mall in Korat was killed by special forces soldiers.

The killing started on Saturday afternoon after when 32-year-old soldier Jakrapanth

Thomma killed two people at a house in Korat before making his way to the Terminal 21 Shopping Mall.

He went on to kill at least 20 people and injuring 40. He live streamed some of the killing spree on Facebook.

He then lay siege inside Terminal 21 for more than 17 hours before he was killed on Sunday morning.

it sure was a loud video with lots of gun fire.

Highly likely. Seemed to have retreated to a kitchen storage area. Probably could only take 2 hostages with him. a boy and a girl, their bodies in close proximity to his. The question is did he kill them or were they the victims of friendly fire?

Similar to the US prison uprising Attica, it will be hard to get the actual facts.  Proper and full autopsies of the innocent victims will likely not be done properly or will be suppressed because there is no way the Officials will admit to killing innocents, even if by accident.  I believe by most accounts at Attica, most guards and civilians that were taken as hostage by the prisoners died by friendly fire.

Dogs are not trained to work in an area that size alone without their handler nearby. Sounds logical sure, but in reality it would have caused more harm than good.

It would be the acoustics in there, those guy's were not shooting willy-nilly, they were well trained, the one in the black beanie took one shoot, obviously a very high power riffle.

Soldier kills 29 people in Thailand before being shot

By Panu Wongcha-um and Patpicha Tanakasempipat

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand (Reuters) - A soldier angry over a property deal gone sour killed at least 29 people and wounded 57 in a rampage that spanned four locations in and around the northeastern Thai city of Nakhon Ratchasima before he was shot dead early Sunday.

Most of the victims were at the city's Terminal 21 shopping centre, where the shooter held out against an overnight siege with an assault rifle and ammunition stolen from his army base.

Police named him as 32-year-old soldier Jakrapanth Thomma. He initially posted written messages on Facebook during the attack before his account was shut down by the company.

"It was a personal conflict...over a house deal," Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters on Sunday from Nakhon Ratchasima after travelling there to meet wounded survivors.

Prayuth added that the conflict was with a relative of the soldier's commanding officer.

Thailand's worst mass shooting prompted soul searching in the southeast Asian country of 69 million, where the army has long styled itself as the protector of the nation and dominated politics for decades either overtly or from behind the scenes.

Prayuth, a former military ruler, came in for criticism over his handling of the incident after he waved and smiled during a visit to the scene and made a heart gesture with his fingers. The hashtag #RIPPrayuth was trending on Thai social media.

"If you have a heart like kind Thais, you should respect relatives of the deceased with a calm and mournful manner," commented Jirayu Houngsub, an opposition member of parliament.

At a morgue in Nakhon Ratchasima, the family of 13-year-old Ratchanon Karnchanamethee sobbed as they identified his body.

"He's my only son. He hasn't even had dinner," said his father, Natthawut Karnchanamethee. "I allowed him to do anything he wanted to. I never set expectations for him. I only wanted him to be a good person."

Led by police and soldiers, hundreds of shoppers fled the mall during the 12-hour standoff. Crouching low, they escaped in small groups, dazed and exhausted. At one point, armed forces emerged at a run carrying small children.

"It was frightening because I could hear the occasional gunshot...we waited a long time for the police to come and help us, many hours," said Suvanarat Jirattanasakul, 27, her voice trembling.

Another survivor told local Amarin TV that the shooter was "aiming for the heads" and said his colleague died on the scene.

"He was shooting everywhere and his shots were very precise," said the man, identified as "Diaw".

The province's governor, Wichien Chantaranochai, on Sunday night said a total of 29 people had been killed and 57 were wounded.

Also known by the historical name Korat, Nakhon Ratchasima has a population of about 250,000. It is close to a national park popular for its wild elephants but the relatively poor northeastern region is one of the less visited areas for Thailand's tens of millions of tourists.

STOLEN ARSENAL

CCTV footage from inside the mall posted on social media showed the gunman dressed in black and wearing a mask, his gun slung over his shoulder with no sign of other people around.

According to local media, Jakrapanth worked at an army base close to Nakhon Ratchasima, which is about 250 km (155 miles) from the capital Bangkok.

He was a sharp shooter and took many special courses on carrying out attacks, including planning ambushes, army sources said. Thai media reported he often posted photos of weapons on social media.

The killings began at around 3 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Saturday when the soldier opened fire in a house before moving to an army camp and then driving to the mall in a stolen Humvee.

The soldier's commanding officer was one of the people reported killed before the soldier moved on to the shopping mall and began shooting.

At some point during the day, the soldier raided the army camp's weapons storage to arm himself, said Lt. General Thanya Kiatsarn, Commander of the Second Area Command.

"He attacked the guard to the weapon arsenal, who later died, and he stole an official jeep and an HK33 gun and an amount of ammunition to do what he did," Thanya said.

'SPEND THE MONEY IN HELL'

Hours before he began shooting on Saturday, Jakrapanth had posted on his Facebook account denouncing greedy people.

"Rich from cheating. Taking advantage of other people. Do they think they can spend the money in hell?" read one post in Thai.

He later posted written updates during the attack.

"Death is inevitable for everyone," he wrote. Later, he complained about his fingers cramping and asked "Should I give up?" before the account was no longer available.

Hours after the mall siege began, Facebook <FB.O> said it had removed the suspect's account.

"There is no place on Facebook for people who commit this kind of atrocity, nor do we allow people to praise or support this attack," a Facebook representative said in a statement.

Major shootings are rare in Thailand other than in the far south, where a decades-old insurgency persists.

'IT APPEARS HE WENT MAD'

While I don't disagree with the above statement, he must have been on something or very depressed to commit an act like that on innocent victims... a very disturbed person indeed.

Having said that, as shocking as this news was [but keeping things in perspective for a moment] Thais nationwide found this abhorrent, and couldn't understand how something like this could happen in Thailand.
But it does, he killed 30 people with double that 58 injured, that almost equals the numbers killed and injured each and every day on the roads of Thailand, yet that is found to be acceptable?

If a mass shooter went on the rampage each and every day and killed those same numbers there would be anarchy on the streets, with marches, protests and people demanding change!

Yet they happily go about their daily lives and tolerate those deaths + injuries without so much as a second glance, and it's been happening for years?

I find Thailand very strange at times..

I wonder how much of the official investigation will focus on how it was that a soldier in, what is essentially a peace time army, (with the exception of the south) was able to amass such a large amount of weaponry.

I read somewhere that he had around 700 rounds of ammunition. That should never be possible in normal peacetime circumstances.

Unless one's national Consutution has an amendment that permits it.

This is of course, very, very sad and an absolute nightmare for the relatives of those killed. Had my gf not decided to go home rather than wait longer for her son who was involved in a nearby art competition - she would still have been in T21 - as it happens she left at 1:30pm otherwise things could have been very different. We have friends involved as do so many families in Korat. I'm so sorry for all the innocent victims of this horrific event - it saddens me that this is the second mass shooting in Isaan in a very short period.

However, I am almost as saddened by the comments of many members here regarding the shooter. I hope for your sakes you never have to deal with mental illness and have people call you scum, sicko and all the other names that have been hurled at the guy who carried out this attack. There but for the grace of god.....................

It should be clear to any reasonable person that he was very ill - as I said in an earlier post, no sane person could do what he did. The dispute with his boss was the trigger but I strongly suspect he had underlying mental issues. Also, as I said earlier, its rare for a person with these mental traits to not show signs that something was wrong a while back. What measures do the RTA have in place to check the mental state of the people it entrusts with lethal weapons?
