And if it becomes an epidemic in Thailand it will be entirely the fault of foreigners for not wearing useless masks. Clever preemptive move by the Health Minister, wasn't it.

It doesn't even need to get that bad, once demand is lower to fly to thailand airlines will just drop flights.

It's not going to take 1,000 deaths to do that

I haven't read all the comments on this topic and the question might have already been asked but is it possible that many countries will soon ban flights arriving from Thailand?

Anything for the Motherland. Even if the Chinese were carrying a zombie virus they would be welcome. And why not, Chailand is just another Chinese province.

Seriously? How many countries have a "Minister for Health" that actually have a medical background? I'd be surprised if you needed more than one hand to count them on.

By listening to their expert advisors.

Why would they do that? China didn't!

It's happened already, before the virus. Emirates has already reduced their number of flights to Thailand, and at the start of the high season Norwegian decided Thailand was no longer worth flying to.

I think it would need a lot more than 32 cases and no deaths for any country to do that. Let's get things into proportion.

Do the nasty, ignorant, petty minded and racist turds in uniforms who run thailand have any idea just how much they are soiling the image of the country they claim to love, or are they too stupid and arrogant to get it?

So , par consequence , Thai should be denied entry to a foreign country if they want to travel . By putting the profit above security in times of a virus outbreak , they should be considered ' unwanted aliens ' . Fair enough .

So, 'par consequence' all farangs that are squatting long-time in Thailand, especially the ones making much noise about their generous hosts rubbish approach to a health emergency that has the WHO in a dither, they too should be denied entry to foreign countries if they want to travel. By putting creed above security in times of a virus outbreak, etc, etc....

Fair enough?

Do you want that mask now?

They have never been in control of this virus, totally ridiculous coment and it's all about the money, and not the welfare of the citizens.. Very sad really...

Well isn't money (tourist money) in the interests of the citizens, too when you take into account the direct GDP of Tourism for this country?

Now I can understand that health of citizens is important but so is the livelihood of those citizens. It is not just tourist operators and hotels that feel the lack of tourists. It has a knock on effect to the communities right back to the farmers.

The decision the government must make in regard to handling of this virus, the tourism sector and the welfare and health of the people is not a simple one and anyone that believes it is is peddling snake oil.

Given the number of Chinese visiting Thailand on a daily basis, the current lowly number of 32 being reported is highly dubious.

Given that mainland China, you know, the big bad, disease-ridden, commie one, isn't allowing their own people to travel outside the country, maybe the Chinese you are seeing on a 'daily basis' are not all mainland Chinese?

I know, I know, it's so difficult because they all look the same to us.

the REAL numbers are a magnitude higher (350,000 infected, not 35,000).  We all know how bad this is...  it's air born.  long range....

No we do not all know how bad this is! This kind of post is Fake News spreading fear, stress and possible panic totally unnecessarily so should be removed by moderators!

Wearing masks will not stop this virus.

I had a conversation with my son in law who said as much ,apart from the one he got below. But hey, what does he know compared to the Health Minister?...I mean he’s only got a PhD in chemistry and works with A major pharmaceutical company...

Fake News!

How do you know? China always will cover it up. Same as all countries.

So far the reported cases, as far as we can tell, came from prolonged contact with an infected person - spending time with them in close proximity at a conference, over a meal, or in shared accommodation. Passing an infected person in the street has a very low risk of catching the virus - just like the flu, in fact

I don't plan on going to Pattaya, Bangkok, the floating markets around Bangkok nor Chiang Mai anytime soon.

Why not, didn't you tell us all it's just another flu?

You cannot post as fact pure speculation  about what China might be covering up! That is just spreading unnecessary worry, stress and even panic in some. This is exactly how fake news works!

The WHO are in China and health experts from other countries are now assisting and monitoring the situation closely so it would be impossible now for China to cover up what this fake news post is claiming!

China has had two weeks to get their dog & pony show ready. WHO's entourage will see what they are allowed to see.

First they changed the visa requirements.

This next year tourism was down.

Revenue is down.

Result keep doors open for the people of which it came.

Crazy...... refusing Dutch cruise ship with checked ...as far as possible ...all passengers not being sick ....after first saying it can come in. But still letting all non-checked Chinese potential zombies come in freely. Glad I got out last week. This will get worse..so worse that even prime minister Pinokio can not hide it any longer behind his long nose.

I believe the WHO as much as I believe in fairy dust. Speculation and as there is some truths that have come out over time that the WHO is bought and paid for by Big Pharma.

With the Thai people's love for social media and very noticeable, recent use of it to bypass bureaucratic and cultural obstacles and get several inappropriate, illegal or corrupt goings on well into the public domain, I am fairly confident that the nations' hard-working nurses and doctors at government hospitals are not party to such a grand scale cover up as you suggest.

But far be it from me to stop you chasing your wild geese. You probably need the exercise anyway.

It turns out that what you say about Thailand’s medical practitioners is true. We have a Thai neurosurgeon and two well-connected nurses in my wife’s greater family.  They counseled today that this medical community at large is very connected via social messaging and the consensus is that if the infection rate was higher than what is being reported, they would know about it and raise a clamor. Our neurosurgeon advised me not to worry until he’s worried and that is something he does not predict will occur anytime soon.  This is a very bright and learned man and I place my faith in his seasoned judgment.

i must withdraw a portion of my original post in where I suggest that the true infection rate is far worse than the government is reporting. My bad.  But I stand by my thoughts that an emerging nation like Thailand deserves a medical professional to serve as its public health minister. I described this in that post as any modern nation would do so and a few posters have taken issue with this. Perhaps Thailand is not a modern nation in this sense and until they become one, they take a back seat in joining the world community in finding ways to thwart the novel coronavirus and similar contagions. Declining to close its borders to Chinese visitors as a preemptive measure is a major failure IMHO.

I think not soon...but it could happen of course if the infection rate starts to blossom.

Thailand keeps door open.   What about cabin doors , I think I just read a cruise ship is not allowed to stop off in Thailand.

Oh wow! And a whole bunch here in the TV typing pool who have been relentlessly suggesting the Thai authorities have got it all, hopelessly wrong suddenly have to scratch around for a way to turn this rather sensible Thai government decision into some sort of affirmation of their uselessness.

Have at it.

Yeah, and Singapore has banned flights from China as well as people having visited China within the previous 2 weeks. My employer (a university) in Singapore requires us to take our temperatures twice a day, enter the number into an online system, and retain a photo of the thermometer as evidence; don't do this and you will be terminated. The government provides detailed case-by-case updates everyday. They have also provided masks to every household. They are taking the matter very seriously and professionally, unlike at least one of their neighbours...

I hope you have advised the Singapore government that masks are useless in stopping the spread of the virus lol

The government would appear to me more concerned about their relationship with China than they are about the health of their own citizens.

yes i think you are correct, however they are n't panicking like other nations and they have had success with their treatment as several chinese have returned home considered cured.

No (but some silly persons have suggested stopping Thai people leaving for foreign countries)
