'Nomad Capitalist' (famous expat vlogger) suggests many Thai expats are 'clingy'

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Andrew Henderson, the Nomad Capitalist, is well known for his videos and business ventures to help wealthy expats and wannabe wealthy expats, digital nomads, etc. His catchy catch phrase is -- Go Where You Are Treated Best.

In this video Andrew suggests Thailand is not such a place for certain kinds of expats as certain kinds of expats are clearly not welcome here by the government. (We all know that by now, of course.)

But here's the funny part -- he suggests trying very hard to stick around when the unwelcome mat has been clearly displayed is not so rational.

"... like being clingy in a relationship when the relationship is obviously over …"

Video starts at the Thailand part --

Always amazes me when some farang thinks they know enough about LOS to tell other farangs what to do in LOS.

No farang, IMO, will ever know as much about LOS as some think they do.

He's talking to a younger, more nomadic audience that either is still earning money or has the financial resources to move anywhere they choose. I think he would readily acknowledge that people on retirement visas with family and property here and living on fixed incomes aren't really in the same boat. I doubt he would describe retirees who have begun to feel unwelcome in Thailand but are trying to hang on hoping that things will improve in the future as "clingy."

I am currently mulling over the idea of taking a more nomadic approach to my remaining years, traveling lighter, living in a new area or two for stretches, before maybe settling down for good. I found his "free bird" philosophy refreshing. Thanks.

He's not a newbie. He's been a nomadic entrepreneur expat for several years. He doesn't even like Thailand much but recognizes many people do so he covers it such as in his video about the Elite visa. He's renounced his US citizenship and has numerous passports which is hardly a newbie thing to do. Obviously he has an extremely international perspective.

The countries that he has become more involved with include Montenegro, Georgia, Colombia, Cambodia and Malaysia which I think is his favorite. He's a big fan of Mexico City from an international business POV.

Don't think he can help this nomad capitalist's dream of lower wine taxes with his book he is trying to flog????

Yes. Obviously his focus is a fairly small group of people. Wealthy international entrepreneurs seeking the benefits of living and operating outside their home countries when they can get treated better often related to taxation and lower labor costs. Yeah he's a capitalist alright. I thought his comments about some Thai expats were amusing. It's better to be welcome!

He doesn't live in Thailand and I don't think he ever has. He's just not a fan. He has lived and invested in Cambodian and Malaysian real estate through.

He recently bought an apartment in one of the best neighborhoods in Bogota Colombia which he had renovated.

I don't think he's talking about retirees, pensioners, etc. I'll take his advice and definitely NOT settle in Thailand whatsoever in the future. But I'll always visit...for 6 months at a time lol

Yeah. Sure. But if you're a digital nomad why bother with a place where it's so easy to end up in immigration detention when there are many other pleasant places where you'll actually be welcome?

Why would I care?

He's got a fair point.

Personally, once staying in TH even for a few months every year on tourist visas become risky, I briefly explored other options and then, recently, decided to move to a "neighboring" country, where I, quite happily, live now. ????

IMO the ED visa is too much hassle, even the most corrupt agents cannot handle retirement visa if you are under 50 (or maybe I've spoken to the wrong ones) and the elite visa makes sense only if you are seriously financially or emotionally invested in the country, else it is just a waste of cash.

So considering the growing anti-westerner sentiment in the country, the looming crisis (which is going to be quite major, considering the impact our little virus friend made), the visa crackdowns, the gestapo-like IOs, it makes little sense to cling, if you, like myself, have the opportunity to work from virtually any place on earth (given they have teh internets).

Yeah sure Andrew. Keep praising yourself and your little known fame/website. When money from your daddy will be over will you crawl back in your parents basement? 'Nomad Capitalist' my ass.

Creating videos stating the obvious is easy. Why don't you think instead that maybe people have families, jobs or something serious that keeps them here?

Bingo. I saw it coming a few years back and adjusted my lifestyle accordingly. Thailand is going to have some major problems that affect the quality of life for everybody in the country. While the reasons for this would touch on taboo subjects, suffice it to say that if I was retiring today, all things being equal, I wouldnt do it in Thailand.

I love Thailand and it is the source of many fond memories for me over the years. Im close enough that I can go whenever I want with no hassle. But its not paradise any more. YMMV.

Where else to go is for the nomads. Me, I can go where I want.

I agree with him, all these young single guys in their 30s that just want a way for one more entry ........ what's wrong with them, move around a bit more, plenty of countries happy to have you for a couple of months in a year, why so desperate to stay in Thailand, it ain't that great a place.

The pussy and beer are overpriced, and the weed is over-policed.

Still some decent hiking and cycling.

But in reality, only my kids keep me here.

I think many of us might have chosen differently had we had a crystal ball that the Army would run Thailand and bring it to its knees but, here we are, invested in property and relationships hoping it will be better soon.

Well I like his videos and I'm definitely not part of his target audience. Oddly I find some overlap in his philosophy for wealthy people that applies to low budget expats as well.
