I guess soon we will have many pages discussing if this is good or bad news. I guess it's the beginning of the bright future of Great Britain. 555

They used to be blue years ago. I think it was late 80’s when they changed to red.

My first was black.

They start next month but will still issue burgundy and blue passports until mid 2020. You cannot choose which colour you want. From mid 2020 they will be blue.

Really, interesting....I would have thought it would also be blue with a name like Denim ????

First and subsequent - don't remember them being blue

The original stiff passports were a very dark blue which might perhaps be remembered as black now

I always considered them to be black, when I get one I will put a burgundy cover over it so I don't stand in line like an outcast.

If people prefer the EU pretty in pink passports instead of the British Alpha Male manly blue ones, who are we to question their choice.

Still got my old one. It's black and looks great.

The UK chose to go to the burgundy passports under Thatcher I believe. There are other countries still in the EU that have blue passports. It would have been a much greater statement about taking back control to do something completely different like going back to a black passport.

UK passports have never been black....

I have my grandfathers old passport dated 1928. It's blue.

"The statement goes on to say: “Since its introduction in 1921, there have been a few variants of that navy blue colour but it has never been black, as some commentators have suggested.”

They can call it what they like. My old one's black. ????
And if you read the article you've linked to you'll see they also have a link to a UK government website that says this: "You can also apply if your last UK passport was an old handwritten blue or black one."

As an American, my passport is blue.

Would I care if it was red, blue or green? So long as I could travel with it I don't think I would care.

Maybe someone could explain why this color of your passport thing is so emotive, because I don't get it

You don't get it...............................

The colour is not important.......................... historically, the British passport happened to be blue, and therefore more identifiable as a British passport than the red "EU" versions.

We used to have Blue passports and then we joined the E.U and were made to used red passports and then when we went abroad, everyone thought that we were foreigners and not British because we didint have proper British blue passports

The remainers, some Eumainers and the occassional antipodean have lost the argument over Brexit, so now they revert to sneer tactics, it falls into the same bracket as bendy bananas etc, like children in the school playground they will name call when they lose an argument.

To the leavers the new passport signifies liberty, our total sovereignty and democracy, so blue is the colour we used before we were shackled to the EU, so it makes sense to use blue again.????

Yup blue/black passports.

The ONLY tangible benefit of Brexit so far.

Just ignore the fact that the UK could have made the passport any colour it wanted prior to Brexit.

Still it gives the Brexiteers something to be proud of. Just the same as Big Ben being played on a tape recorder.

Bless.

Blue Passports are British

A little bit of nostalgia for ex-pats, like red phone boxes, buses, red pillar boxes and black London cabs.
