Global coronavirus devastates tourism in central Bangkok

I knew coronavirus was denting tourism in Thailand, it’s inevitable, but to see it with my own eyes in central Bangkok was startling.  The morning commute is still fairly busy, but once that rush subsides you are not left with many other people along the streets of the Sukhumvit Road.

This vlog was shot on March 17th 2020 and so things will get far worse before they start to get better.

Hardly surprisingly, taxi drivers are now happy to switch their meters on when you ask them too. They are pleased just to have some custom!

Well, if your still there today (Thursday) or Friday, go around to the barber shop (salon) named KHAN and get a hair cut, shave, manicure, pedicure and facial.  Their business is way down, too.

The shop is located South of the Ambassador Hotel entrance in the covered walkway opposite the former entrance Villa Market. There is a big 7/11 and pharmacy that took over part of the space from the old Villa. Just the doormen at the Ambassador where the old Villa was.

Looks quite normal for a workday morning in Sukhumvit - there's never 1000's in the street there anyway.

My wife and I were walking home along a central stretch of Sukhumvit Road the other night after about 8 pm... Normally, that area and the road sidewalks are bustling at that hour. The other night, it was about as quiet as I've ever seen in my years of living here.

This poster is a solid example of how the virus is still spreading so effectively despite most people understanding the dangers.

There will always be someone who doesn't understand cause and effect, or who thinks the rules don't apply to him. Deeply selfish.

Seriously, what part of responsible behavior did you miss? We must all do our part to flatten the wave of infections. The hair can be cut next month, another 2 mm won't matter.

@geriatrickid & @donnacha Actually, this hair salon, barber shop does practice good hygiene, but to respond to your panic, your reactions are paranoid. I've known the owner some 12-13 years. They cut my hair and shaved my neck with a brand new blade.  Really, I do understand responsible behavior and yours is over reaction.

You take care of your life and I'll take care of mine.

My local noodle shop is a bit quiet. I’ll give you the address and when you go please take as many people as you can. If you don’t I won’t get free noodles from them

@Fairynuff No worries mate. Send us the address. I live just outside Bangkok (Northeast). I have to go to the grocery store sometimes, too, or should I just sit back and starve. Oh or better yet, order my food from Grab or pizza delivery. Of course, I have no idea where those delivery people have been or to how many sick people they have already delivered to that day.

BTW, folks, keep your comments to yourself, I won't be checking back again.

Seriously, do yourself a favor and spend a few minutes researching how this virus spreads.

Amazingly, the length of time you have known someone does nothing to reduce the risk.

Also, as far as we have been able to determine from Wuhan, blades are not a primary vector of transmission.

Actually, no, you don't. This is a perfect example of someone being too lazy to bother understanding a situation, and too arrogant to think it applies to them. As a human, you have a responsibility to do all you can to not spread the virus to people for whom it could be fatal. You are failing in your responsibility.

I could understand this ignorance a month ago, but now ten thousand humans have died and it is clear that the final figure is likely to be in the millions, possibly higher than the number of people who have died from AIDS. I am guessing that you are careful to wear a condom when having sex with strangers. The difference is that AIDS would hurt you, but Covid-19 only hurts other people.

What a stupid idea. This post should be removed for positing such an idea. This is exactly what not to do. Close proximity to a dozen people in AC environment. Genius.

I am thinking of going to Bangkok from Chiang Mai. Is there a blockage of visitors from outside Bangkok right now?
