Thailand's Covid-19 mortality rate among lowest in the world

The Covid-19 mortality rate in Thailand is at 1.7 per cent, which is almost four times lower than the global average, while the recovery rate is at 62.5 per cent, the Ministry of Public Health said.

 

 

Dr Sophon Iamsirithaworn, director of the Division of Communicable Disease, said on Friday (April 17) that the Covid-19 situation in Thailand is improving as the number of new cases has declined with no new imported cases due to limitation on flights to the Kingdom since early April.

 

“There have been 47 deaths from Covid-19 so far from 2,700 accumulated confirmed cases. The mortality rate in Thailand stands at 1.7 per cent, while the average global rate is at six per cent,” he said. “Of the total cases, 1,689 people have recovered while 964 are still under treatment, which makes the domestic recovery rate 62.5 per cent. This statistic points to the efficiency of treatment by Thai medical communities.”

 

Sophon said the mortality statistics showed male patients have a four times higher risk of death from Covid-19 as 2.7 per cent of deceased patients are males while only 0.7 per cent are females.”

 

When divided by age group, those who are over 70 have the highest mortality rate at 12.1 per cent, followed by those aged 50-59 (4 per cent) and 60-69 (3.7 per cent), while the group with lowest risk is 20-29 years old at 0.2 per cent.

Among the deceased, 41 per cent had diabetes, 36 per cent had high blood pressure, 18 per cent had hyperlipidemia, 14 per cent had heart diseases. “However, some have died without any chronic diseases. Therefore the best offence against Covid-19 is to take precautions to prevent oneself from getting infected and seek diagnosis as soon as related symptoms are visible,” he added.

As I had said many times. The numbers presented are all we have. Of course there is always a possibility they might be wrong, I have never said that they can´t. Only produced all the difficulties in hiding or manipulating them. However, before there are any proof of any wrongdoing. Good work! Congratulations to keeping them low, and saving the life of many people.

It is relative to the amount of testing done.  The government has already stated that it cannot afford mass testing.

I see. So if 2.7% deceased were male and 0.7% were female, I guess that the other 96.6% were katoeys, right?

They throw all these numbers and percentages out there, to make it look like they have a clue about whats happening...

But they still can't say how many people have actually been tested or are being tested !! 

 

If these are genuine numbers then there is no justification for curfews and business closures now... Oh but we have to worry about the 2nd wave right.....

Test few, and make the criteria for testing very narrow and the results will be low.

 

Hire a PR firm to trumpet the success.

Fair comment !

Thailand is ok now, can lift lockdown on May, but still need to close the borders until summer to prevent covid 19.

This Covits has made todays TATs tourist figures look nearer the truth. Never uderstood how over the years where they hid all those Millions of extra folks , certainly not anywhere i lived over the last 25 years.

There seems to be some evidence that contrary to what is assumed, smokers actually have better survival rates from Covid-19 than non-smokers. Chinese are heavy smokers and yet the death rates from Covid-19 are relatively low.  Possibly something in Thai cigarettes that makes them safer??

Good you acknowledge that finally, but it is the governments actions that caused it.

 

As for the figures, they just don't make sense. No one has put up a plausible explanation why they are low

Natural social distancing... The Wai instead of handshakes/hugs/kisses seems to have been a huge benefit for Thailand.

If you believe the statistics good job. Unfortunately, not many do. Wuhan just increased their numbers by 50%. How much should Thailand raise their numbers? I think true numbers would shock everyone.

 

The next numbers they need track are the number of people in Thailand that will be dying from starvation and other deceases associated with malnutrition. It will be a way higher than COVID even if they ever report the correct numbers and include all those "pneumonia" cases across Thailand.

 

The government, and not just Thailand, have used a "nuclear bomb" approach to kill this virus. The aftermath will be as bad as a nuclear winter and the effects will last for years.

 

Good new, TAT is still drinking their own "whatever" drug, announcing they project a 16 million figure for tourism this year.

And I've said this before. Even with focussed testing, only 2-3 percent are positive for the virus. Do you really think random mass testing will find many more cases?  They may be a small percentage of asymptomatic carries, but most without symptoms eventaully develop them. There's no justification for mass testing in Thailand at this stage. Compare to New York where nearly hald of those tested are positive. Mass testing makes more sense there. 

Tis the miracle that is Thailand.

I can see it in writing, it must be true. If only the rest of the world had followed Thailand's lead.

Simples.

100,000+ tests isn't 'few'. Especially when most tests are negative!!! You do realise the tests aren't random? So doubling the tests will not double the number of positive cases.

You're argument is EXACTLY wrong. It is what is called an appeal to authority. It's a logical fallacy. Look it up. 

 

Thailand has the responsibility to prove and provide evidence of its claims. How much testing are they doing, for example?

 

Surely, everyone here understands you can't count what you don't test and confirm.

Why the comment that I acknowledge that finally? Now it´s time for you to answer some questions, but you will probably just make a catchy comment and a poor excuse to avoid them per usual.

Where and when have I posted that the economy does not suffer? (No need to acknowledge something that is common sense to know)

In what country is it not the governments actions that causes the economy to suffer during the actions taken to minimise the spread of a pandemic?

Why does it not make sense? Thailand has more closed and implemented harscher actions to curb the spread than many other western countries. That as well as favorable climate and that many people actually care about wearing masks as well as cleaning their hands.

I do not 100 % believe the numbers. That out of the reason they might be false as well as there has been mistakes made and people that forget. However, I do not look down on what is presented until there is proof for them to be false. If Thailands number would be false, as long as people on Thai Visa has been trying to point that out without proof. Why is there not same result as in Italy, France, Spain and USA? You just can´t manipulate that amount of dead people.

testing is unimportant. 

 

what you don't see in Thailand unlike communist China and the USA and the rest of the world is social media with stories of nurses crying for help and totally overwhelmed with dead patents in the hallways on gurneys.   

 

dead bodies stacked up in trucks like in NYC and mass graves. 

 

that could not be hidden here. yes, some but not all. there are just too many cameras now and too many places to post it.  

 

so i would suggest everyone stop saying Thailand is lying about the numbers and start thinking about what the difference is. Many very good ideas why Thailand is not experiencing the pandemic the same way the rest of the world is.

Look at China. Guessed you believed their numbers too. Now they've changed things. Still well under-reported I bet. Thailand come on it's your turn to fess up. China's numbers were and still are a farce. What makes you think Thailand's aren't. The head of the Thonburi Health Care Group says numbers could be 40 times higher than reported due to people being asymptomatic. ICU's are full in the BKK hospitals speciallising in covid and they have run out of respirators. Again one must keep in mind that the outcome of very low numbers of test will result in very low numbers of confirmed infection.
