Whoa!!!  Smoking may prevent covid infection.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/coronavirus-france-nicotine-patch-gum-research-covid-19-a9484696.html

How counter-intuitive- but it appears that in China, USA, and France many less smokers are turning up in ICU than would be expected.  The statistics are barely believable considering that smoking is so unhealthy.

And as the researchers point out, those smokers who do succumb are far more likely to suffer worse consequences since smoking undermines the pulmonary system long term.

But it appears that smoking (bit presumptive to think nicotine or patches) may protect people from being infected, or mitigate symptoms.

Marly red anyone?

I fully expect this posting to disappear under a torrent of misinformation from those who miss the point.

The point is that the news article to which a link is given in the OP is

FAKE NEWS

From the news article:

Quote

A study published this week, based on 483 patients at Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital in Paris, said smokers were less infected with Covid-19 than other people.

Clicking on the red word study in the above quote brings me to the publication of the alleged study, in the authors' words a tentatively proposed hypothesis, and there is no mention in there of "483 patients" or any other number of patients and no mention of "Pitié-Salpêtière hospital in Paris".

There is this earlier topic on the same subject for those who are interested:

On my part, being a lifelong non-smoker, I look forward to the publication of a study hypothesising that drinking red wine protects against infection with SARS-CoV-2.

It's not fake news at all- smokers are far less represented in covid illness than one would have thought- this appears an absolute fact.  And it's not just one population studied.

So, we have to ask why that it is!  Perhaps it's nicotine inhibiting covid 19 binders in some way, or some other chemical in cigarette smoke.  What is a bit silly imo is the assumption that nicotine patches will help, ie, nicotine patches are not cigarettes.

Coronavirus and smoking: What does the World Health Organization say?

By Matthew Holroyd  •  last updated: 29/04/2020 - 16:02

...

So what do world health experts say? Are smokers less likely to contract the virus?

No. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), those who smoke are likely to be more vulnerable to infection.

They died already, lung cancer etc, before reaching the risk age for Covid 19.

There could be truth in that.  Obviously though we are looking at people who are very much alive at the time of seeking medical assistance.  But yes, it could be that in the very old the smokers are long gone.

It might also be the case that the records are inaccurate.  It's the sort of detail that isn't obvious like age, gender, etc.

It could also be something to do with weight, as nicotine suppresses appetite.  We know obesity is a major factor in morbidity.

IMO this organization frequently favours ideology over fact, which is often the case when outside funding is a factor.  It has been hopelessly out of step with mainstream science on vaping for example.

I believe the statement here is somewhat dated and general in nature.  Smoking of course is basically deleterious to health,

That's an important point- strictly speaking , the data (if accurate) relates to smoking and not necessarily to nicotine, or any other related activity.

I agree that vaping is much less harmful, indeed could even be beneficial in certain cohorts, such as COPD sufferers.

A more detailed study has been carried out in Italy using more reliable data, and it seems to confirm that smoking may play some role in protecting smokers against infection from the virus.  It really does appear that there is something in this claim.
