An elderly man and his wife had a close brush with death after a large roadside tree fell on their Toyota in downtown Chiang Mai last night during a storm.

Suchart, 67, said he was on his way home with his wife sitting next to him as they went along Charoen Muang road.

He accepted that had he been going just a fraction faster they would have both been killed.

He escaped any injury but his wife had chest pains after colliding with the console in the abrupt stop. They had to be cut out of their vehicle.

A chain saw was utilized to chop up the tree and the road was reopened after an hour following the incident around 8pm.

The Mae Ping police told Sanook that motorists should look out for falling trees and branches.

The licence plate of the car was 5783, for lottery purposes.

No, please watch where you are driving!

This has happened a few times while in CM. The trees are so big on many roads, when we get strong winds they are dangerous to go near.

The ones that don't fall down, i.e. the huge majority, aren't dangerous.
