Google is the source of this problem, their result is incorrect, many Thai people use it, hence the confusion.

"Proper calendars" show the "official" Buddhist holidays as 4th and 5th, with Govt added holidays of 6th and 7th in lieu of the others being a weekend.

So, even though it's evolved this way, making the non alcohol days 5th and 6th is non sensical.

I am sure the Lord Buddha never spoke out against drinking in moderation or on people enjoying themselves especially on His special days. yet the Thai Government seems obsessed with banning alcohol on any days of celebrating the Lord Buddha and His years of happiness to the people.

The ban is on selling, not consuming.

This 48 hour closure is an annual event so I don't understand all the reaction. 

I find it a bit irritating myself, but it does not come as a surprise, you just need to get on with it.

This is after all a predominantly Buddhist country so I wouldn't say anyone is being forced to do anything. Firstly you choose to live in this country, you live by their rules Secondly if you want alcohol, there is nothing to stop you stocking up before Sunday.

I went to buy alcohol yesterday at both 7/11 and Lotus local stores. No problem at Lotus but 7/11 refused. I went to the cashier with 4 cans of beer. There wasn't any notice of a ban on the fridge door. I said Lotus were selling alcohol, and mentioned the Buddha Days were Sunday & Monday. She pointed to a small print notice on the wall behind her. I gave her the cans and walked out.

Confusion reigns, but it's no big issue, just Thailand!

Cannot, impossible. My anxiety and depression demands heavy consumption of alcohol and cigs daily...You keep your kindle, it’s useless to us beer drinkers.

I really don't see the problem, check how much you need to survive 2 or more alcohol free days (I do wonder about alcohol addiction if you can't stop drinking for a few days but that is an other point).

 

Make sure you always have a minimum amount of alcohol in your fridge, buy when that amount is reached. Now if your caught out you got 2 days (or whatever you need) of alcohol in the fridge and are not hurt by this. All it takes is a bit of planning.  (rotate your stock if your worried about expiry dates)

 

Not sure how that is hard, i do the same with food. I always make sure i got at least food in the fridge or other stuff for a few days. Its a simple concept. Maybe some drink too much that their mental capabilities are shot so they can't follow that concept.
