Phuket Governor urges hope, confident domestic tourism will bring B100mn relief

PHUKET: Phuket Governor Narong Woonchiew has urged business across the island to hold on until visitors start arriving under the national campaigns to boost domestic tourism in the country.

 

Speaking at the Governor’s House on Monday night (July 20), Governor Narong said that he expected the campaigns to bring Phuket some much welcomed relief as businesses across the island struggle to stay alive.

 

At least 50,000 visitors are expected to visit Phuket as a result of the campaigns, generating as much as B100 million for the local economy, he added.

I'm sure thos people arriving here will have a wonderful holiday....with hardly any businesses open in the tourist areas!

 

And while 50,000 domestic tourists is better than no tourists at all for businesses, it's not exactly going to replace the 9 million or so arrivals previously seen. In fact for many businesses it'll not even be worth opening.

After reading all the comments on here from expats that have Thai families, the consensus is they think Phuket is overpriced and not worth visiting. 

I think the figure, by my calculations should only be 96,732,687.25 OK!

Good spot. I think there may be a misplaced zero somewhere. The question is should it be 5,000 visitors generating 100 million or 50,000 visitors generating 1billion?

 

Or maybe the figures are right and Phuket is really getting the cheapest of tourists!

always the optimistic nonsense. Soon many will have nothing plus no job and it will only be the privileged that will be able to holiday and the present government will get their dream of just rich tourism ... but at what cost?

It amuses how bad these guys are at basic economics. If 80% of your revenue is from tourism and say 60% (?) from international tourism. Theres only one way to claw that 60% back. And thats not feasible for quite a while. It's going to get a a lot worse and its going to take a long time to recover. They should be honest with Joe Public. A long weekend with "50,000" visitors will amount to nothing.
