Aren't We Purified Enough To End 90 Day Reporting?

Serious question here. With all of the "thinning" of the temporary foreign population in Thailand, isn't it reasonable for the government to simply eliminate the 90 Day Reporting requirement for those still here? Seems to me that the annual request for extension of stay, with a requirement to report a change of address, should be enough to keep track of law abiding expats.

I think it has become clear in recent months that most immigration rules are completely unnecessary.

 

As far as I know, no serious things happened in the amnesty period.

They in power don't even like their own on the whole unless you are an elite of some sort.. I personally think they get great enjoyment at treating us like 3rd class people.

Except that a lot of the "temporary" foreign population is still here and have their "temporary" stay extended to the end of September now (and will no doubt be clamouring to have that extended even further).

The 90 day thing is an annoyance, especially for those not close to an Immigration office. It wouldn't bother me at all to see it go the way of the TM.30. I've never even tried to do the report online or by mail.

Not really sure what purpose the 90 Day serves anymore. They have our passport details on their computers, so they know when our passports/visas/extensions expire. We can travel around now without having to rush to Immigration within 24 hours of returning to let them know we've made it home safe and sound. If we move anywhere then Immigration gets notified via the TM.28 (well, they should get notified at least).

Coming in every 3 months just to show that we are still alive and kicking is pointless. I generally just accept it as one of those things I have to do in order to stay living in this place. A small price to pay for the ability to stay here year round instead of being a frozen chunk of ice for 8 months of the year and "chilled" for the other 4 months.

They could get rid of it for the people on annual Extensions. Actually, we are the only ones that have to do it right ? People on Multi entry tourist visas still have to "leave" the country once every 3 months right (during "non-covid" times) ?
(I don't know actually. My friend comes over every winter on a METV and has to do 1 border run each time before going home in the Spring.)
Don't some people on other Extensions have to do that as well ? Like Business/Marriage extensions ?

If that's the case, then really the only people that need to do 90 Day reports are those on annual Non-O/Non-O(A) Retirement Extensions ? (Never actually thought about that before.)

If that's the case, then yeah, they should get rid of it. I'd suspect that most of the people on Non-O/Non-O(A) Extensions probably don't change addresses too often anyways !

Since the TM 30 has gone by the wayside; 90 day reporting should as well; for long stayers with long lease agreements already ratified with Immigration.

If I'm no longer paying my rent, the landlord will be chasing me up one way or another and I'll be in deeper strife for breaching a contract than not reporting to immigration I'd think.

I always find it amusing that foreigners come here, of their own free will, can stay or go as they please - - and yet, while they are here think they should have some power in changing the laws of the land... that does not happen in my home country... I don't think it would go over too well.. 

 

some things you just have to accept... 90 day reports are just not that big of a deal.

I was in a restaurant in CM a couple of weeks ago, my food had just arrived when a fellow walked in and was about to sit near me at the bar - one seat distancing... the waitress, before he even sat down, asked me if I wanted to move my seat... I said no need... then the fellow sat down... wild unkempt gray hair, a 4xl belly with an xl shirt that did not cover his navel, filthy shorts where you could see the dirt stains and boils all over his legs... 

 

Dirty farang - sure. I have never seen a Thai so appallingly filthy and dressed like that in a restaurant... field workers are far more clean and presentable..

 

When he started wildly gesticulating, and coughing... the waitresses helped me move to a table...

 

But, being clean and presentable, I never feel like I am treated poorly - I am respectful and am treated the same way...

1. Got to say I see lots of Thais with horrible sores/bites/scars on their legs.

I think it's to do with insect bites, from living in stick huts, and/or parasites (Bilharzia?).

But agree, they probably don't have enough money to eat in western food restaurants.

 

There used to be a big old white guy in Mad Dog all the time who appeared to have half his face rotting off.

I stopped eating there because of him, I don't think he was dirty.

 

2. When people type this I think 'Colonel Blimp' types wearing cargo shorts, white socks and sandals.

yes, about the bites, [though these looked more like boils - I did not waste much time checking him out] but when they go out, even to the mall, they put on clean clothes...

Although  we all know the 90 day report is 100% useless, asking the question of eliminating it to the concerned people will bring you a predictable YES from everybody. Unfortunately we have 0 power to make them change it unless, one day, maybe,perhaps they realize it creates more problems (work) than benefits.

 

We can always complain about immigration. By experience of living in some other exotic countries, the RTI is not the worse by far..... also not the best either by far........

Use soap.

Yes, no 90 day reporting. And while they are doing that how about extension of stay 2 to 5 years, same as driving license. Yeah, I got more chance winning the lottery especially as I don't buy tickets, Ha!

Allowing online reporting.....when it's working....makes a mockery of the whole 90 day reasoning. I could stay at a friend's in Chiang Mai or Samui and report my address in Pattaya...

...one ridiculous scenario for 90 Day Reporting keeps recurring with no sensible explanation is when you front up for your annual Extension of Stay; that visit is not deemed a 're-set of the 90 Day reporting clock', as it is when you re-enter the Kingdom. If your dates dont coincide with the early/late facility, you must return soon after to do your 90 Day. Ok so its no big deal for those who have success doing it on-line or by Registered Mail, but it is confusing and causes one to forget easily. The whole system needs to be overhauled for sure.

While it's an annoyance to make a one hour round trip for the 90 day report it's one I am ok to put up with. The previous tm30 on the other hand was a joke that had me ready to leave Thailand.  Naturally I'd like the 90 day to be scrapped too but as it's never going to be, we have to decide ourselves how much bureaucracy we are willing to put up with.

I'm 11 kms away, but it makes for a nice ride in the morning (usually) and an excuse to go shopping somewhere further away than normal.

But a lot of people live quite a bit further away. Silver Lake for example is about 22 kms away. Up country you probably have much further distances to travel to get to the nearest Immigration office.
When you have to drive (by car) for an hour to do a 3 minute report then drive back, it can be annoying. Then try it on a scooter.
Or if you are a bit "elderly" and have issues with moving around a lot. Maybe don't have a car or a scooter even !

A lot of people probably aren't that computer literate and maybe only have a phone that they barely know how to use so online reporting (if it is even working) may not be an option.
That leaves the mail.
Which is almost as bad in some places. In my g/f's village, I haven't seen any "mail box" or drop off spot anywhere and supposedly, any mail for anyone in the village gets dropped at the pooyai-ban's house and they hold it 'till you get around to picking it up.

I imagine there has to be a mail box somewhere (and place to buy stamps). It's 22 kms to Aranyaprathet from her village so it would be easier probably to just drive to the Immigration office there. 
Assuming you are capable of course. 

All just so you can remind Immigration of the things they already know.

Maybe they are just really sociable people (at Immigration) and the 90 Day report is a way for them to interact and see more "foreigners" than they would normally !!! (555555)

I believe the 90 day reporting is a good idea for people living in long stay hotels and in apartments on short term contracts. However if you own your own condo or live in your own family home the requirement should be that you don't need to do the 90 day but are required to do a change of address notification if you move.

Being several months a year here in Thonglor, always doing my 90 days report on line with Darkside Pattaya address.

I think the only reason they keep it all running ,is just to give those in immigration a job . so many would be out of work if it all stopped tomorrow .

You're right about the treatment that most of us receive from most Thai people. My post was addressing the treatment we receive from the current Thai government. There's a significant difference between the two!

Possibly so..... but it takes time for change...every country, when you put this up against how it used to be. Not that long ago really....you had to leave the country to get your year visa, sometimes Malaysia take the overnight train, sometimes it was further usually take 3 days.--- didn't know if you would get it . So your Apartment --bond--etc all up in the air.

Then they said just show us you have the funds to look after yourself --and no more leaving.

 

The 90 day leave the country sit in an old bus do the trip to the boarder, a U turn back on the bus. If you didn't live to far from a border you could do it all in a day........... up country in Nakon Nowhere maybe 2 days.

Then they said forget that pop into your nearest IO and get it stamped....

 

And now when all the cliches are fixed........switch on the comp

 

Gosh living here can be so tough......................

I guess the only interaction I have would be at Imm and they have always been polite and friendly... sure, maybe in my early years a photo or  copy needed that had to be made... that is hardly a big deal.. 

 

other than that, I don't really have much interaction. I used to hang w/a Thai senator and we did volunteer work helping hill people... I just don't get all the anger...
