Flooding

Featured Replies

We live in the Wiang Pa Pao Valley.  The Mae Lao River overflowed last night and we were hit by a flash flood.  MUCH damage.

hmmmm   What may I ask does owning or not owning a "smartphone" have to do with my post?    What a pic?  Sure...   The back of my house at 1 am this morning.

Part 2 now.  The river is full and plugged with debris in several spots.  Looks like the surrounding villages are in for it.  At back door, about 30cm water.  The local soi is impassible.  Hway 118 blocked in at least three locations that we know about.  Likely more.

Thanks ........ looks fairly serious.

Hope it doesn't cost too much for you to fix.

My house has escaped the SanSai dam bust ....... but 1/2KM down the road it's the same as you.

It is not mandatory to look at your phone 24/7, just when YOU want to.

But it seems most folk do, Mrs.Trans and chums are a few that are, when I go for a beer, sitting outside watching the exercisers running by, I reckon 90% have a lit up phone screen as they pass, quite comical really.

On the other tables, near all have their heads stuck in a phone, not having a chummy chat...????

Mrs.T says I should buy an internet phone, I told her, there is no way I am going to get one, I may become like you lot, a small screen zombie, in any case, a few hours on my PC is enough for me......????

You don't have to have internet if you don't want. I had a flip and a Nokia forever. But last year I bought a smart phone. Googlemap is now my friend. Been driving 48 yrs without GPS, gotta say its pretty neat.

Never, I know it gets tiresome. Walk up to a checker and you have to get their attention so they can put the phone down. it's crazy how our society has become infected with the smart phone virus.

Not really 'our society' ....... only women, and some feminised men.

I mainly mix with men socially, and the only time their phone is out is to take a photo/call or check where they are.

And me!!

The problem is and always has been the governments refusal to pay workers to clean the <deleted> out of the rivers so they can flow freely. Their attitude is, it's only a problem when the river is flooding. So why should they pay to have it cleaned when it isn't flooding.

You must be the only poster that thinks a smartphone is owned by everyone. Dumb.

Sorry for the damage and repair bill to build the wall again. Hope the clean up in the house goes well and not too much water damage to personnel affects.

A quick update:

The Amphur Wiang Pa Pao made the National news on most stations last night.  Apparently a record rainfall - 512 mm in less than 8 hours.  Guess that's why it seemed a bit wet.  Highway blocked in many places. both by washouts and by simply too-deep water on the road.

Yes, the Mae Lao River has not been getting the attention it deserves here.  "Repairs" to the banks and dredging has taken place along about 3km of the river (of it's 30km length in the WPP Valley) - but not yet in the central valley area.  That was scheduled for last winter but get sidelined by other more worthwhile projects, we have been told by out local headman.  Now that a "once-in 3 decades" flood has happen, I am certain that other more worthwhile projects will now taken precedence.

We understand Highway 118 in now open, although VERY slow going along 4 major breaks in the highway.  Repairs are still underway but traffic is being allowed through.

We were very lucky - the water did not enter the house (right to the back door, but not in (by about 2cm).  Our garden house (that also housed our freezer (anything salvageable was given to the community to cook immediately - the rest unfortunately went to the dump) , air compressor, laundry machines, etc;  all a write-off.   Oh well.  My wife's great-uncle (93, they grow them a long time here!) says he has never seen anything like this before.  The last flooding was 1999 - and relatively minor compared to this.

Back to cleanup = at least the pressure washer survived....

People are actually afraid to get a smartphone because they fear they won't be able to control themselves and their usage?

So sad! They are also afraid to have a drink so they don't become a drunk? Just wondering, OMG Or have sex, lest they become a sex addict?
