Thailand ranked world's safest tourist destination amid Covid-19

Thailand was ranked the safest destination in the world to visit during the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

The country topped the list because of its high International Health Regulations score of 85 per cent, moderate population density and very low number of Covid-19 cases.

 

Malaysia’s Malay Mail news agency recently reported that a Berlin-based travel startup, Tourlane, had carried out a study on August 10 to determine safe holiday destinations amid the outbreak. The company assembled data and analysed various metrics, including hours of sunshine per day for outdoor activities as well as the national 14-day notification rates of new Covid-19 cases published by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

 

Also taken into account for the list were each country's population density and its IHR score, which evaluates a country's ability to respond to public health risks and emergencies of national and international concern.

 

The top-10 safest destinations across the world are: Thailand, Jordan, French Polynesia, Greece, Uruguay, Italy, Cambodia, Japan, Ireland, and Botswana.

 

As of August 16, the total number of confirmed cases in Thailand stood at 3,377 (440 in state quarantine) -- 125 are under treatment, 3,194 have recovered and been discharged, and there have been 58 deaths. There have been no domestic cases of Covid-19 for 83 days.

Probably not enough covid19 kits to test them. Certainly makes sense of the Government's overreaction to covid19. There may be a huge underreported number of cases. Thanks for your chart.

Absolute nonsense. How can a country be the safest holiday destination while not letting in tourists?

 

This kind of result I would expect if the study had been done in Thailand.

Oh, sure. I mean who would argue that it's actually as safe as it can possibly be when you're holed up in your hotel room for 14 days after arrival? Strictly speaking, it's 14 days of room service, as you're not even permitted to enjoy a cocktail at the hotel bar or go to the swimming pool, let alone visit the public beach -- all of which would breach quarantine rules. 

 

The question of course is: Why would anyone want to endure a 12-hour flight to experience all that?

maybe the logic is that all the Italians who might have had the virus are already dead.

I believe that is total number of tests done. It does not refer to people still currently under investigation, it is a cumulative number.

Not so. Tests are reported as 750,000 done, so PUI of 380,000 is something else. Pic is thailand and Cuba testing

Of course its safe.... Two weeks quarantine in a hotel affiliated to a hospital is as safe as it gets, but its not really fun for a Tourist !!!! 

 

Thailand is not a holiday destination for international tourists.... Not at the moment until Thailand removes the Emergency Decree, allows commercial passenger flights and removes all quarantine requirements.

 

 

Thailand also becomes less safe the longer the Emergency Decree remains in place, as unemployment ramps up, desperation and crime will also increase. 

 

The Thai Chamber of commerce is projecting 25% unemployed unless the Emergency Decree is lifted. There are consequences when 25% of the population is unemployed, desperate and hungry.

And not just Thailand, others on the list are also closed to tourists.

 

So they may be "safe" (in terms of COVID) but they are not "tourist destinations".

While certainly not perfect, Thailand sure seems to have got this Covid thing right. I'm just lucky that the country is my adopted home.
