A driver narrowly escaped a fiery death this morning when his Mercedes-Benz collided with a six-wheel truck on a road in Bangkok.

Bang Khen police got the call at 6am that flames were blazing from a luxury car after an accident on Prasert Manukit Road in Chatuchak district. The Mercedes-Benz was flipped over by the force of the impact and then engulfed in fire by a spark from from its engine.

Police and fire-fighters closed the section of road to clear the wreckage, causing a long traffic jam this morning. Fire-fighters took around 10 minutes to extinguish the fire.

The Mercedes’ drive, aged 35 to 40, was found nearby having somehow escaped the wreck with only slight injuries. He was sent to a nearby hospital.

Truck driver Pitak On-nown, 31, told police he was heading to Pathum Thai province when the car approached from behind at high speed and shunted the rear of his truck.

“The Benz skidded around 500 metres from my truck, flipped over and then caught fire. However, the driver managed to crawl out of his vehicle”, he explained.

The police will interrogate the car’s driver and are preparing to charge him under the Traffic Act.

High on drugs, drunk, sleepy, checking FB likes or Line messages, updating Instagram, brake failure (yes, that is possible even with a 'luxury car' in Thailand) - take your pick.

Then again, we're only hearing the trucker's story. Maybe something happened earlier and the trucker brake-tested the Merc? Also, it remains to be seen if the Merc driver is the heir to some in-bred elites, in which case, no charges, nothing.

Might not be the Merc driver's fault.  Forensic tests may show he was only doing 55 kmh.

This is one of those rare occasions where the science varies according to the immutable principle of "do you know who my father is?". If they do, then this is the likely speed, whereas if they don't, a "1" is added to the front. QED!

Currently  up in Loei  from BKK and can honestly  say many truck drivers seem to think giving a  signal  to  pull  out ( when they actually  do give a signal ) automatically entitles them to do so, they are some of the most dangerous drivers here due to their size and stupidity which seems to be a qualification for driving a  truck in Thailand.
