My Air Conditioner keeps making a "click" noise

Featured Replies

Hi, my first post here (hence the username, couldn't think of a better one).

My air conditioner keeps making a click kind of noise, at least once a minute on average. It is driving me crazy.

However I had a bad first experience with an air conditioning mechanic, who scammed me into paying extra to top up the coolant when I later found out this is a well known scam.

So to save me money, can anyone give an opinion on why my aircon keeps making a clicking sound? This has pnly started in the last few weeks. The air conditioner is roughly 5 years or older.

Thanks and I am glad to have joined this community!

Roughly five years old or older is very definitive. Maybe get it cleaned of gekkos and sh...t.

And keep a record of the clicks in your diary.

Is it your swinging air vane by chance?  You can turn that off to check.  If it is perhaps can change direction of air flow blades but could require professional service if unable to correct.

I had this for months and you're right it drives you nuts, eventually mine just stopped clicking.

Have you got it on swing? Take it off swing and it should stop.

This is commonly caused by the heat exchanger icing up during periods of humid air such as we have at the moment.

Coil freezing over can also makes a clicking noise. Pull the filter when it starts clicking and see if the coil is icing over.

Use fine gauze. Mine was shorted by an ant whose corpse was still in place. Didn't cost 4.5 K thank god.

if the clicking is ". . .  ---  . . ." it means you A/C is asking for help.

SOS for those of us old enough to be of the Morse generation.

Check air swingers both, up/down & left/right. One could be stuck, but motor still running.

and I was thinking it could double as a metronome

I had similar issues with one of my aircons, and like others have said, it was only really obvious when in swing mode. Problem was faulty/broken drive mechanism for vanes. Got a ridiculous quote to repair it - so just turned off vertical swing - problem solved!

No way to help you, unless we get a recording, sound, of the clicking pls.....

yes, it may well be that the swinging vanes are catching, easy fix, just check that the vanes are clear  and can move easily.  Bit of WD40 to ease them may help.

WD-40 to the rescue

Simply take out and clean the filters, you can do this easily with the bum gun in the bathroom.

always.  The greatest invention ever, it can fix anything, even Sons that are being ass holes.

Maybe there is something touching the fan, Time to clean?

Can you take a video of the A/C with your phone and upload it to YouTube so we can get an idea on what kind of click it is?
