NEW YORK (Reuters) - A majority of Americans, including many Republicans, want the winner of the November presidential election to name a successor to Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Sunday.

 

The national opinion poll, conducted Sept. 19-20 after Ginsburg's death was announced, suggests that many Americans object to President Donald Trump's plan, backed by many Senate Republicans, to push through another lifetime appointee and cement a 6-3 conservative majority on the court.

 

The poll found that 62% of American adults agreed the vacancy should be filled by the winner of the Nov. 3 matchup between Trump and Democratic former Vice President Joe Biden, while 23% disagreed and the rest said they were not sure.

 

Eight out of 10 Democrats - and five in 10 Republicans - agreed that the appointment should wait until after the election.

 

Trump needs the support of the Senate, which currently has a 53-47 Republican majority to confirm a nominee. So far two Republican senators - Maine's Susan Collins and Alaska's Lisa Murkowski - have said publicly since Ginsburg's death Friday that they think the winner of the election should make the nomination.

 

Senate Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed a vote with weeks to go in Trump's term.

 

Democrats are still seething over his refusal to act on Democratic President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, in 2016 after conservative Justice Antonin Scalia died 10 months before that election. McConnell said then that the Senate should not act on a court nominee during an election year, a stance he has since reversed.

 

The looming fight over the Supreme Court vacancy so far does not appear to have given either of the two major political parties much of an advantage in an incendiary campaign season that already was expected to break participation records.

 

The poll found that 30% of American adults said that Ginsburg's death will make them more likely to vote for Biden while 25% said they were now more likely to support Trump. Another 38% said that it had no impact on their interest in voting, and the rest said they were not sure.

 

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the United States. It gathered responses from 1,006 American adults, including 463 Democrats and 374 Republicans. It has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The law of the land gives the office of the Presidency  no matter who sits in it, the right to appoint a potential justice for the SC

 

Its up to the senate to confirm that candidate ,to fill a vacancy by a majority vote!

 

The electoral vote elected a President in 2016 to carry out his  constitutional duties as the POTUS ,one of those is appointing someone to fill a SCJ vacancy  during their term in office. 
The people  don't decide the procedures of the senate,the constitution makes that clear ,despite a reuters poll !

Not true, the great lady actually suggested, in her last days, that in the circumstances the appointment wait until after the election. Who's cherry picking?

The Senate hasn't carried out its duties for years. The abomination known as 45 has emboldened them. The dictator wannabe is getting dangerously close to fulfilling that wish, saying things like "A third term could be negotiated." Well said, trump has no respect for anybody, just continues to blindly caress his own very selfish grandstanding and ego. No respect for the poor and uneducated who just survive, no respect for diversity, none at all.

 

A president who says things like "A third term could be negotiated." has no respect for the founding fathers who very wisely put these laws and rules in place.

 

Bottom line; he still thinks it's his own reality show which he owned and could and did make the rules. Donny I hope you end up in jail, it's would be more than you deserve.

McConnell in 2016- "I believe the overwhelming view of the Republican Conference in the Senate is that this nomination should not be filled, this vacancy should not be filled by this lame duck president," McConnell said. "The American people are perfectly capable of having their say on this issue, so let's give them a voice. Let's let the American people decide. The Senate will appropriately revisit the matter when it considers the qualifications of the nominee the next president nominates, whoever that might be," McConnell said.

 

What has changed? Sheer opportunism? Does this man have one nanogram of ethics in this entire body and soul? Does he have a soul?

 

Paul Ryan in 2016- "This has never been about who the nominee is. It is about a basic principle. Under our Constitution, the president has every right to make this nomination, and the Senate has every right not to confirm a nominee. I fully support Leader McConnell and Chairman Grassley's decision not to move forward with the confirmation process. We should let the American people decide the direction of the court."

 

And the infamously dishonest Lindsay Graham in 2016- "I want you to use my words against me. If there's a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let's let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination," Graham said at the time, The Hill reported.

 

Trump is an opportunist, without any ethics and morals. Even his supporters know this. But, this is stepping way over the line. Hopefully the dems can figure out a way to stop this, since Trump is cascading toward a huge election defeat and the greatest humiliation of his lifetime.

Sorry but at the end of the day it wasnt up to her before she died to say who gets her seat or how the vote should be run. If its in the rules that the Presidnecy can elect with a majority vote then thats the way it should be. Unless of course your not a fan of the presidnecy then naturally you would say lets wait till after the election. In which case if Trump is re elected you havent really gained anything.

The Cuckservatives are going to wait until after the election because "muh honor" and "it's just the right thing to do". Some fraud with mail in voting is going to be discovered and escalated to the supreme court, which they would have otherwise won if they added a justice before the election.

 

After Joe Biden wins the election the Democrats expand voting rights to all possible categories of felons, give citizenship to 10-20 illegal aliens, and reduce the voting age to 16.

 

Republicans can now never again win another national election. Trump had 4 years to purge the Cuckservatives out of the party but it's too late now. RIP USA.

Ginsbert herself said "put in a new judge immediately.  The president is still the president until he is not and it is his duty.  It is extremely difficult to operate with only 8 judges."

This is not verbatim, but what she said when the last judge died with a president less than a year to an election.

(btw, it will still be Trump next year anyways).
