I have no idea whether Thailand has numer plate recognition technology with it's cctv. I do know they need to be maintained.

Nah. No other countries have checkpoints especially for drugs. Busts come from intelligence and the checkpoint is just a cover to protect informants. Anyway Bangkok checkpoints did not stop years ago. Here in Pattaya checkpoints are used to enforce the law not extortion.

An order ending the notoriously unpopular roadside checks was dated yesterday and published by INN.

 

This will mean an end to roadside checks for DUI in particular as the new chief wants to see greater transparency with tests being done in hospitals. 

If Big Pat actually implements everything he says, I suspect he will end up like Big Joke!

 

The local police rely on the roadblocks to supplement their pitiful incomes.  Without substantial pay increases and no further cash payment of fines at the roadblocks the police will not be able to function in Thailand.

I for one think this is good. Have more cops on the road, but they will need faster cars.

The Highway Police.  That's been the normal job since I moved here - escorting "VIPs" and such. 
They'd have to call the new police something different.  Or rename the Highway Police to VIP Patrol to free up the title.

Stop roadside checkpoints ??? In bkk there are quit a few at night around 23:00 from my restaurant to my house is 15km and sometimes there are 3 . I think those are good for catching drunk drivers , everybody needs to blow . If the 5000 cctv cameras can catch drunk drivers , please place thousands of them , but my geuss is they can't so please more roadchecks . Like some members say , those alcohol checks in a hospital don't do much for the person that just got killed by that same drunk driver that will be checked after the accident . It's really redicoulos how they can put people that make these kinds of qouts in charge , but then again that's how it works in this country , the elite need dumb people in charge so they can make donkeys like these make the qouts for them and when everybody complains about the stupidity they can fire them and put them in some office somewhere .

Shouldn't be that difficult.  The average Thai drives so erratically that you can pretty much take your pick of who to pull over and any given time and the probability of that person being snockered is probably about 50/50 if the driver is a guy.

They stop a surprising amount of smuggling in Chiang Rai. They collect a lot of 500 baht helmet fees in Pattaya too. ????

His a good man. You have my respect. But l don't think he means end to all. They are necessary and l.was never shaked down in Pattaya for 5 years. But depends on who and how you come across. I got done for a exhaust 1 time.

This illustrates one of t many serious flaws in road safety laws in Thailand.

The lack of trained enforcement officers - the procedure in most road safety save countries is to test for alcohol at the roadside and then confirm with calibrated equipment in a police station or maybe hospital...... he appears to be missing out a step.

 

The end to checkpoints has to be welcomed - they are proven world wide to be ineffective and in particular in Thailand where the officers ae untrained and things like siting are simply so bad as to be risible.

The checkpoints are fine it is the shakedowns that need to disappear . Set up a few of these crooked cops with undercovers who catch them in the act and strip them of their jobs . Soon the shakedowns will reduce .
