Maybe in the future a sweeping change would be a built-in breathalyzer that would block the car's controls if the driver had too much alcohol... ????

Self driving cars can't come too soon.

Some fascinating claims he is making. First of all, the RTP at it's inception seems to have been created with a status quo from the government. We will NOT pay you a living wage, but you have a franch

  • So you will only be done if you are involved in an accident, or even kill someone whilst D.U.I. ? Hardly a deterrent for a drink driver nowadays.

  • Your underlings are going to love you Suwat, roadside checkpoints are where they make most of their earnings. Now how are they going to screw over motorists?

Interesting prostitution doesn't rate a mention with this new broom.

It has been officially and thoroughly investigated, especially in Pattaya.......There is no prostitution in Thailand, it is just a myth.:w00t:

I have no idea whether Thailand has numer plate recognition technology with it's cctv. I do know they need to be maintained.

The roadblocks/checkpoints looks ok to me, I think they can find some drug dealers in these checkpoints and they could actually get a lot of drunken drivers, so maybe the checkpoints can do a good job if you want them to do it.

Nah. No other countries have checkpoints especially for drugs. Busts come from intelligence and the checkpoint is just a cover to protect informants. Anyway Bangkok checkpoints did not stop years ago. Here in Pattaya checkpoints are used to enforce the law not extortion.

You cannot be serious checkpoints to enforce the law, not extortion.????????????????????????

What planet you on?

maybe the police could use their energy to be near traffic lights to catch those jumping lights then can check the the driver !!!!

drunk/drugs  etc etc

Misleading headline, its a temporary stop to the alcohol checkpoints

Pol Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk has called for an immediate end to all forms of roadside checkpoints in the country.

An order ending the notoriously unpopular roadside checks was dated yesterday and published by INN.

This will mean an end to roadside checks for DUI in particular as the new chief wants to see greater transparency with tests being done in hospitals.

If Big Pat actually implements everything he says, I suspect he will end up like Big Joke!

The local police rely on the roadblocks to supplement their pitiful incomes.  Without substantial pay increases and no further cash payment of fines at the roadblocks the police will not be able to function in Thailand.

I foresee another Big Joke situation soon. :cheesy:

I for one think this is good. Have more cops on the road, but they will need faster cars.

Hopefully this guy will lead the department into the 21st century.  Now, purchase patrol cars and train the cops to pull over traffic violators and issue citations.  Maybe then they could put a dent in the 21,000 lives lost a year on the Thai roads of death.

Gotta die from something...

Ripping off motorists in Phuket  was a popular pastime

What are they going to do now for tea money?

good idea, wait until a drunk driver injures or kills some innocent victim then test them

no comprehension of crime prevention

this is very disturbing

so now it will be give us this sum of money or we take you to the hospital not the police station and who pays for the test I can guess lol

Alcohol testing in the hospital morgue that will achieve a lot !

I think roadblocks only serve as pocket money for all the bent cops!

If they do that, then who's gonna escort the busloads of boyscouts and girlguides, flying down the outside lane on their regional jamboree's?

The Highway Police.  That's been the normal job since I moved here - escorting "VIPs" and such.
They'd have to call the new police something different.  Or rename the Highway Police to VIP Patrol to free up the title.

Stop roadside checkpoints ??? In bkk there are quit a few at night around 23:00 from my restaurant to my house is 15km and sometimes there are 3 . I think those are good for catching drunk drivers , everybody needs to blow . If the 5000 cctv cameras can catch drunk drivers , please place thousands of them , but my geuss is they can't so please more roadchecks . Like some members say , those alcohol checks in a hospital don't do much for the person that just got killed by that same drunk driver that will be checked after the accident . It's really redicoulos how they can put people that make these kinds of qouts in charge , but then again that's how it works in this country , the elite need dumb people in charge so they can make donkeys like these make the qouts for them and when everybody complains about the stupidity they can fire them and put them in some office somewhere .

Also teach them how to spot a driver who might be under the influence, make the traffic stop, make the contact, see the signs and symptoms, remove the driver from the car and give them some Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, then arrest them if they are deemed to be under the influence of either alcohol or a drug based upon training and experience, and then test them.

Shouldn't be that difficult.  The average Thai drives so erratically that you can pretty much take your pick of who to pull over and any given time and the probability of that person being snockered is probably about 50/50 if the driver is a guy.

Yeah, the news reports that were out much earlier today stated that they were only doing away with the Drink-driving testing at checkpoints, not doing away with the checkpoints themselves.

Ah-hah.  So "Shake-down Central is still in full operation.

All translates to: bigger brown envelope now needed

checkpoints will likely be re-introduced once they have installed the CCPCCTV

I would say another big dose of miss read reporting

They stop a surprising amount of smuggling in Chiang Rai. They collect a lot of 500 baht helmet fees in Pattaya too. ????

His a good man. You have my respect. But l don't think he means end to all. They are necessary and l.was never shaked down in Pattaya for 5 years. But depends on who and how you come across. I got done for a exhaust 1 time.

This illustrates one of t many serious flaws in road safety laws in Thailand.

The lack of trained enforcement officers - the procedure in most road safety save countries is to test for alcohol at the roadside and then confirm with calibrated equipment in a police station or maybe hospital...... he appears to be missing out a step.

The end to checkpoints has to be welcomed - they are proven world wide to be ineffective and in particular in Thailand where the officers ae untrained and things like siting are simply so bad as to be risible.

You have no idea!

The checkpoints are fine it is the shakedowns that need to disappear . Set up a few of these crooked cops with undercovers who catch them in the act and strip them of their jobs . Soon the shakedowns will reduce .
