Is this some sort of a joke ? Looking at a CCTV site it would appear that the place is close to deserted ????

What a total waste of both time and money

  • All they will see in Patong is closed and near derelict shops, dirty and crumbling footpaths and roads, and a town reeking with "the stench of death".

In addition they will release turtles at a beach.

Aha, I have sussed out the real reason for their visit!!

The inscrutable Chinese will be present at the releasing of the turtles and they will surreptitiously attach little tracking devices on the shells of these creatures, so when they head out to sea and grow a bit fatter, the Chinese can easily catch and eat them.

See, they are looking out for their future food source and only for themselves, the same as it's always been.

Of all the places on Phuket, why choose Patong? It must be devastated. There are some gorgeous spots on Phuket. Not Patong!

Spent some on Phuket a few years back. Was first there in 1976. No resorts. A few bungalows on the beaches. Beachfront land was 1,000 baht a rai. They could not give it away.

Went back in 1986. Had developed alot. Still very nice. Again in 1993. Far more development. Still amazing. Azure seas. Spectacular women everywhere. Great food.

Did not return until around 2008. It was degraded, for the most part. But, still decent. Good nightlife.

Again a few years ago. No need to ever return. The charm is lost. The over development is stunning. The prices were crazy.

My guess is that the ambassadors will accept the freebie. Will they promote the island?

Phuket and Samui have tough roads ahead. Really tough. And they are getting zero assistance from the lame army. That is for sure.

They hope the visit will lead them to inspire foreigners living and working in Thailand to have confidence in travelling to Phuket for holidays to give the area a much needed economic boost.

How about charging foreigners living & working in Thailand the same rates/charges/entrance fees etc etc as locals?

And you have to wonder on the days they will be dragging these people around to places will they have told all the businesses in that areas to make sure they are open or face a fine and will they be drafting in loads of workers from the TAT to sit in these places and wander about pretending they are happy tourists ! ????

Would not surprise me one bit if this is the case . Just wait and see , the press photos of it will show bustling places everywhere they go ????

Wouldn't any negative review result in defamation?

And if posted through social media constitute  computer crime?

Best the ambassadors avoid this invitation if they want to maintain diplomatic independence.

A "jolly" in Phuket will be like home from home for most of 'em, the only difference being that it will be Thai taxpayers, rather than their home countries' taxpayers, who will be picking up the tab! :partytime2:

So those  who  are so deter minded to  refuse to acknowledge that out  of the total number of  countries who  have  resident representatives in Thailand there are  28  who would  accept an invitation to (ostensibly) establish  good   reason to promote resumption  of visitation ?

Is it  stupid  to attempt? Is it  stupid  to participate?

Or is it more stupid  to fall over in laughter at what  can be  perceived as pointless?

In terms of intended objective possibly so.

But in terms  of many other aspects successful .

While the rank and file in certain sectors  of  employment have been sidelined those in the overall Govt. Dept. Services retain their employment and  are expected to  have purpose.

So what surprise  that Public Relations events are organized in defiance of reality  but to the benefit of the upper echelons of Diplomatic Envoys. Well screened venues and 5 star Hotels  for several days is no  less costly to tax payers  than the equivalent  tax deductibles of private  business.

The Phuket Tourist Association has invited ambassadors and consulate officials from 28 countries to visit the island for three days in November.

Just trying to do the maths.

How can you do 14 days quarantine in 3 days

Why would they need to quarantine?

It says they have "invited 28 Ambassadors and Consulate officials" it remains to be seen how many will actually accept.....:whistling:

It could be construed as bribery at worst, unethical at best by those ambassadors who come from countries where acceptance of such freebies is nowadays off limits. Hardly looks good back home too, going on such a jolly when millions are under lockdown. A polite refusal should be the response to the invite.

Well there you go.  Local ambassadors and consulate officials have incredible influence over pandemic tourism initiatives .....or........something.

They do have some influence over the travel advisories put out be the Embassy.  And those travel advisories going forward will probably address Covid related warnings.

This is a smart move, given that the diplomats are already in Thailand, probably looking for something to do.

One would assume ambassadors are living in BKK so no need for quarantine

They have not given any tour.  They have been invited.  I suspect most of the cost will be complimentary.  Impressive volume of people, though.  Ambassadors and their partners would total 56 non-spending V.I.P.s.

This will solve so many problems.

They can invite how many embassy they like embassy dont decide for the tourist the tourist decide for there selfs if they want to except the rules and requirements at the moment they have no takers

afraid  its had its day and now faces many years of waiting to see what happens .many of its regulars are now skint and wont be going anywhere

I saw a number of buses pass by the beach on Tuesday with a police escort.  It looked like they had the people social distanced on the buses.  I was thinking it was the Chinese, but it must have been this lot.  It sure did look like a tour and not an "invitation".
