I know, I know, some idiot asks this every year, and this year it's my turn, lol.

Next weekend’s cultural festival of Loy Krathong.

Being a full moon day it falls on a different date but this year it’s the same night as Halloween.

This is by-the-by as it will be a Saturday, October 31st.

Checking the phases of the moon, it is indeed full on Saturday 31st, so that should be Loy Krathong.

However, I've checked several other sources and they all say that Loy Krathing falls on Sunday November 1st, even ubonjoe's 2020 holidays sticky here on TV:

Have they rescheduled Loy Krathong from the day of the full moon on October 31st to November 1st to avoid the clash with Halloween, as suggested by the Thai holiday websites, or is it still going to be held on Saturday 31st?

I call it the annual float day, making my basket today out of some wicker and banana leaves, so that it is ready to add all of the final objects on Saturday, before we head to the river to float it away.......

I see places saying 31 Oct and some saying 1 Nov.

I think though, in "Thai style", they start the celebration on the evening before the official date. I notice that with other celebrations like birthday parties where they'll have the big (public) party the evening before the actual birthday. (Like people celebrating on Christmas Eve or New Years Eve for example).

The Full Moon is scheduled to be at 21:49 on 31 Oct, which, traditionally, would be the start of Loy Krathong.

As it isn't a public holiday (for some unknown reason), I guess nailing down the exact date for it isn't seen as being that important. Most people I know will be celebrating on the evening of the 31st.

Thanks, that seems to be reasonably up-to-date and definite in what it's saying.

Odd date to hold a bikini race, though, lol, the same day as Loy Krathong and Halloween.

We were at a riverside restaurant a few days ago in Bangkok and they were 'selling' tables for the 31st.

After looking up some more sources I am certain that the krathong floating will be on 31st after sunset.

Moonrise Bangkok about 17:50h. Cross your fingers for clear sky.

Krathong is about everything beautiful

Halloween is about everything ugly

I think having them on the same day is really twisted.....And wrong...

So I need to go to Shark just before midnight and Pinups just after, or the other way around?

Well, as a full moon on 31 October only happens once every 18-19 years, I think we can live with it.

It makes you wonder which the girls in the bars will choose, as they love dressing up for both events.

I bet they will chose the krathong

Halloween was more to please to their western customers

and to attract them into the bars, but they have now both disapeared

(Almost all the western customers and half of the bars)

They are being really respectful of traditions by holding a glow in the dark bikini race.

Along the years Pattaya has never been in stock shortage of silly ideas

so yes a sort of tradition here with this

I'd say someone was too stupid to check the date before they organized the race.

BECAUSE it was (the bikini race) cancelled some weeks/months ago....NO ONE EVER CHECKED THE CALLENDAR.....hence race is now when it is going to be along with Loi Krathong, which is on the day/date that it is suppose to be !!!!

Get Practicing...

Bikini race is about something beautiful. Loy Krathong is dependent on the fullmoon like Easter. Just an unfortunate coincidence this year they are in the same date.

It turns out I didn't need to ask after all, the GF says she's coming on Saturday regardless as she has an appointment elsewhere on Sunday (and I'm not invited, of course, lol).

Many thanks for the replies.

My good lady wife assures me that Loy Kratong is on Sunday the 1st. It shall be so in our household.

yeah, for some reasons this year almost everything seems to be unfortunate

knowing the Thais are very superstitious, the temples should be doing a killing

at the moment with all the money offerings trying to having back the good luck

It's not unusual for the small communites to slide the event 1 day after the main city

it's allow the citizens, particularly the youngs, to go to the main city for the big event

then to do the same one day later in their own community with the elder
