WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Thailand's duty-free privileges for certain exports to the United States will be revoked from Dec. 30, U.S. President Donald Trump said in a letter to House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The letter, released by the White House, follows more than two years of negotiations with Thailand over issues ranging from access to Thailand's markets for U.S. goods and inadequate labor rights in Thailand. USTR in September 2019 announced https://ustr.gov/about-us/policy-offices/press-office/press-releases/2019/october/ustr-announces-gsp-enforcement plans to remove $1.3 billion worth of Thai goods from GSP duty-free access, including certain shellfish, mangoes and forestry products and some electronics.

"I have determined that Thailand has not assured the United States that Thailand will provide equitable and reasonable access to its markets," Trump wrote to Pelosi.

  • Absolutely. With Thailand charging import duties up to 300% on US products, why should Thailand have free access to the US market?

... maybe the US finally reacts to the friendly import taxes applied to their products here in Thailand? About time too ...

  • I kinda like this.  300% import tax on US wine and booze.  Same with cars and car parts.  Etc, etc, etc.  Love it.

The trade relations with China are more important.

This is too hard. They should do it how Thailand does it with the car industry for instance. If Thai farmers produce their Mangos in the United States they should be duty free. And also other Thai products if the are produced in the United States. ????

I wanted a high temperature thermometer gun for my pizza oven. My wife found one through a Thai company and ordered it for B1200. When it did not arrive in a week, I knew something was amiss. Thai Customs said that we needed to pay them B1200 for the thermometer to be released. Come to find out all the Thai company had done was order one from the states. Tit for tat I say...

So people America pay more how much?

Yes, without the GSP certification VAT and taxes will apply for US based customers. Whom in return will choose different products.

Pls add on US luxury products.

It appears exports to the USA are near 29 billion dollars, so not really a significant amount

All these last minute moves by Trump will likely get reset by Joe right after he takes office.

Nick one at 7-11, Tesco, Big C. Everywhere you can find them and often staff are not more using them.

Be aware. If your pizza has a higher temperature than 37.5, Immigration will pick it up and put in quarantine or better, buy one of those expensive insurances. Pizza could go into private hospital.

Well done Mr Trump - if these import tax lunatics here want to price a £2 box of cereal at £8 then they deserve it

Maybe not significant to you but i think a billion is significant to most people

The US consumer pays a little more for the import duty, money gos to the US treasury = more government money to pay all national costs.

I hope the EU and UK follow suit, time Thailand stopped this unfair trade.

For Thailand a slap around the face though.

As if Thailand didn't have enough of an economic problem already. I guess as the country develops it will get fewer freebies.

Then again, a deal with the UK maybe on the cards soon.

Makes the deficit spending a tiny bit smaller.

Pay back time by America for Thailand cancelling the rotten poison chemicals to spray all around the Thai farms.

And that Baht value still flying high? Tamai?

Barstool story. Just buy one locally off lazada for 400 baht. I've never ever ever ever been charged anywhere near 100 pct import tax on anything from the US. And I've bought a lot over the years including a lot of engine parts. Even Amazon advanced tax pricing never comes close to 100 pct.
