A nonThai isnt really in a position to be part of the protests, or voice any opinion. 

It appears lots of Thais tried to diffuse the situation and the guy had plenty of chances to just walk away, instead he appears to want to stay and inflame the situation as though its his fight and his presence and opinion is warranted.

sorry, but my guess is the Russian was just talking a walk on the beach with his daughter and probably had no idea what was going on and thought nothing bad about just standing there and looking on.

it's sad that many posters let their anti-Russian bias take over, blaming the victim just because he is a Russian.

 

The dailynews reports the speakers also addressed the crowd in English, which confuses me considering the posts telling to stay away. If they didn't want foreign attendees, why make speeches in English ?

 

the question of the reason for the assault by Khamma remains open. reading some of the Thai comments everywhere, it might have been shouting into the megaphone while holding it 50cm from the Russian's face with the Russian then understandably asking for the speaker to take some distance.

 

in any case, such aggression against a peaceful onlooker is totally unacceptable and nearly all Thai commenters of the news agree that the assault was particularly low and vile, along with the gestures made in front of the 10 year old girl.

But, is anything the Russian said worthy of assault - are any words worthy of violent retaliation?

 

 

 

That abusive female runt sticking up her middle finger to his face and his daughter faces was atrocious. 

The Thai thug was also extremely abusive, unable to control his anger - whatever was said is not worthy of the actions of those Thai’s who behaved in such an outwardly aggressive, rude and violent manner. 

 

Clearly the Russian should have not got involved. But for those implying this is not an issue for foreigners to get involved with, why are Thai’s making protests and speeches in English ????? 

 

 

This is a clear case of assault - the violence needs to be penalised legally. I hope they find the Thai guy and charge him to the full extent of the law, this is assault (un-aggravated).

Why is his opinion not warranted ? because he is not Thai?

 

Thats as daft as the Thai’s saying ‘why come to Thailand’ [if you don’t like what Thai’s do] ? (i.e. protesting)

 

The Child could be half Thai - as a parent of a Thai Citizen why is his opinion any less warranted than any other Thai parent who has concerns for the future. 

 

Those who suggest that because we are foreigners we have no rights to an opinion seem to miss the point that foreigners live here, have made Thailand their home, are married with Thai kids, own property etc - of course they have a right to an opinion. We (foreigners) may not be able to vote, but that is different from having a right to voice our opinion and suggesting that that right is restricted is a little moronic.

 

That said, common sense should obviously be applied when exercising ones right to voice an opinion in a potentially inflammatory situation. 

 

 

A lot of Thai’s did try to diffuse the situation and the Russian did somewhat inflame the situation by remaining there and laughing as the Thai thug got more angry - foolish of the Russian to remain in place, but that still doesn’t warrant a head-butt. Would have loved to have seen the Russian knock out the Thai thug in retaliation, but how many Thai’s would have jumped him then ?

No foreigner in their right mind would have been and stayed there in the first place. That shows total ignorance of what's going in Thailand and the legal situation of foreigners being involved with protests here in any way. Of course perhaps not fair but I assume more often than not a Russian would be pro Putin, pro authoritarianism, and antidemocracy, and if that was the gist of his communication (verbal or non-verbal) then multiply the stupidity. Not saying it was OK to assault him. Of course it wasn't. But we're not in Kansas anymore or the Russian equivalent.

No doubt good, sensible advice, but there is a proud history of foreigners supporting just causes throughout history.  Perhaps if more foreign residents in Thailand were brave enough to stand up and be counted, faster progress towards a just and fair society could be made.
