Accident reduction or accident waiting to happen? New road confuses netizens

1pm.jpg

Channel 7 reported that Thai netizens were completely baffled by a new road in Surat Thani in the south of Thailand.

What the Highways Department have decreed is a safe response to public demand is an accident waiting to happen, they claim.

The road in question is Asia 41 near the Wiang Sa intersection. Traffic goes in two directions on the local road off the main highway.

But those who exit the main road seem destined to come up against those going in the opposite direction.

Confused by the "chicanery"?

Look at the map - that is what netizens have been doing trying to work out what the highway authority is thinking.

The road was yet to be in official use last week when the news broke causing a confused furor on social media.

The authorities said that people were going the wrong way and the new measures were a response to stop accidents after a meeting was held.

It appears that those on the local road have to give way to those exiting the main road.

Signs will be erected making it all clear.

  • Boring! They should place a ramp at the exits from the main highway so that cars jump over those coming in the opposite direction. Did you not ever play matchbox car games as a kid? As the other post

Not confusing at all. If you have a red car you follow the red arrow, yellow cars follow the yellow arrows. If your car is slightly green with a red license plate, guess what the slightly green arrows

Why not put  a small flyover in? Would keep traffic flowing smoothly without having to cross oncoming traffic.

A two direction frontage road near me ( parallel to the 32 Highway ) closed the slip roads from the highway and installed traffic lights.

Relying on traffic exiting a fast moving highway onto an equally fast moving frontage road and expecting drivers to give way is naive to say the least .

Ah the 'loundabout'. Even if anyone understood the rules regarding them, no one obeys them, all preferring to merge together.

The more I look at the photo above the crazier it appears...just totally and utterly no,no,no and no !!!!

as they can't do roundabouts then a tunnel or fly over is the only sane option.

It doesn't take much to confuse this lot anyway, wait until they start going down the wrong way

Roundabouts are great fun here , seems like seeing how many cars you can get on it before it grinds to a halt is the only way to go.

As usual lack of indication and staying in your lane adds to the fun !!

As if Thailand don't have enough road fatalities already without adding more confusion to the mix...

Outrageously dangerous....

One of the biggest accident hotspots in Thailand is U-Turns. How can officials not have learned that any junction which requires one party to give way to another is a recipe for death.

This road design creates the perfect storm for head-on and T-Bone collisions.

The design itself is highly idiotic in any country, to expect such a junction to be safe in Thailand is idiocy at its height.

I think who ever came up with this crazy idea must have shares in the local private hospital...

Given the absolute lack of driving discipline and an equally lack of enforcement of the traffic law by the police. It is a disaster waiting to happen. It will keep the Por Teck Tung guys very busy. There is probably a parking place prepared for them already to lie in wait.

Where I live there is one roundabout, I will give you one guess at what happens there.....:crying:

Surely they could have designed a roundabout somewhere into the new scheme too?

To avoid carnage there needs a be a clear "right of way" and an observance of the rule as to who has prioty and who has to "give way". Not that "give way" is something drivers and riders here will ever understand.

If your car has a different color, then you can't use this road!
