I sent the wife to the P.O. today to post a Xmas card to the UK.

when she came back, she said she was charged 75 Baht to

post it,not only that she had to put one of those small green

customs declarations stickers on the envelope ,for a xmas card !

She said the lady at the desk said everything has now changed,

well the prices have certainly gone up, last week I posted a letter

to same address 27 Baht, but having to declare a Xmas card......*

I am pleased that's the only Xmas card I will have to post, the rest

will have to be happy with E-cards.          * There must be a Government dept, where they have several civil servants

Just sitting there ,their job to think things up to make life more difficult for people.

I discovered this a few weeks ago.

I used to send letters to Europe for 17 baht and to the USA for 19 baht

They told me this is not just a Thailand thing but in co operation with postal services around the globe.  Whether or not this will be a permanent pricing remains to be seen but will be like this while the world is still gripped by covid.

Mind you, because of this Covid thingy pretty much MOST postal services around the world have become slow, expensive and in many cases non preforming at all with items stuck for weeks and months in transits or in some god forsaken black holes for postal items somewhere...

I have been posting airmail to the UK and France and US, including birthday cards, with no problem, at the usual 24 baht cost. It looks like your wife was charged for registered mail.

Your experience, regardless of how long it stands, is totally irrelevant unless the OP is posting overseas mail from the same post office as you do.

YMMV

The Thai Post international rate calculator is here:

https://www.thailandpost.co.th/index.php?page=index&language=en

Click on "calculate fee" at the list on the right.

Mail to the United States is 220 baht plus a 40 baht surcharge.  More for heavy letters.  Quite a shock after years of inexpensive international air letter post.

In some cases items are waiting to board the next available aircraft with date unknown.

What is Christmas?

I'm trying to dissaude my Buddhist GF from buying an Xmas tree and putting lights on the house......It seems I can't escape Western culture

compromise - get the small tree and avoid the lights...

my wife used to do a small tree and a raffle style pick a number for gifts.. one nice gift but mostly 10 baht boxes of corn flakes...

Incorrect, Thailand mail service has standard pricing and rules, it should be the same whichever post office you go to.

So does Immigration, but look at what happens there between different offices and officers.

And of course the Western culture of presents.

Your wife added a carrying charge. ????

Possibly, but there was obviously some confusion as the price for sending regular size card overseas hasn't changed and should be applied uniformly.  I paid 26 baht for my cards to the UK.

No doubt that's to make sure it turns up on time, if ever ????

Did you have to put a customs declaration sticker on them ?, the P.O. is like immigration

each one must have their own rules.

No customs declaration, as they were just cards.

Sure some Immigrations and Post Offices might have different interpretations, this is Thailand after all, but for things like extensions of stay and postage prices, they should charge the same.

Yes, an email is so much nicer!

Why bother with either, Christmas is the time of family dramas.

As Al Bundy said "Christmas isn't a time of regrets, that is what anniversaries are for'.

I sent some documents to one of my banks in Hong Kong last week.  Registered Mail cost 138 THB.

It arrived and all is good with my banking ????

138 THB doesn't seem particularly expensive to me for what I needed, in fact given the nature of the documents I would have paid to fly there and hand deliver them, were it not for the quarantine etc.
