Open the country to the "One Million Baht Club" - despite woes tourists set to come

Channel 7 News reported on the comments of a real estate and hotel executive who was upbeat about Thailand's tourism future despite the recent cases of Covid-19 and the anti-government protests that are dragging on.

Witthawas Wiphakun claimed that confidence was high that the government was in control of both situations.

He thought that if the country was opened up to foreigners then both tourists and investors were ready to come.

He urged businesses to set up associations to offer tourism packages especially to well-heeled foreigners.

A "One Million Baht Club" to spur tourism, banking and the medical sector was mentioned though precise details were sketchy in their report.

PM's office minister Anucha Nakhasai also spoke about the Creative Industry Village (CIV) pilot scheme in Chainat province that is being rolled out nationwide to help villagers and small and medium sized businesses in 230 locations.

What is "The One Million Baht Club"?

Linked article is less than revealing.

Is that the entrance fee?

Sounds like another fishing expedition.

But dreaming is FREE!

Only because they haven't yet discovered how to tax it.

Sketchy? Really, how about just plain downright laughable.  Wait I have it now: TAT's new Slogan "Come to Thailand with 1 million Baht, and we will double it for you in order to stay and enjoy our beautiful ASQ locations, our Covid minders, and your beautiful free tracking watch"

So they want tourists to drop 33,000 USD in Thailand on a 60/90 day stay... <deleted>? That's 16.5k/11.1k every day!

How could someone possibly spend that here unless they were spending the vast majority of it on a ridiculously overpriced villa/hotel.

Again, another measure that doesn't benefit the majority of Thai people. "Well heeled" tourists will not be spending at the local market, buying trinkets and tat on Khao San Rd, soapy/oily/funky massages, bottles of chang/leo in a local bar or paying bar fines for girls (real, questionable or passable).

Most people may despise the backpack and 2 week millionaire crew, but they do spend a lot of money (collectively) in the right places. Well heeled tourists are only going to spend money with businesses who already cater to exclusive clubs in Thailand and are probably getting along just fine already with the local well heeled tourists.

Thailand is a mass tourism destination for a reason - everything is cheap here already. Well, unless you want to buy a car or decent laptop/computer, then your going to pay far more than it's worth.

Is'nt that next door to the "Urinating into the Wind Club"?

Guess it is true. Rich people can't get COVID. Guess they missed the announcement that Trump and many of his buddies got it.

I'm a "glass half full" type of guy.

The more news like this, showing utter desperation at bringing in foreigners (and their money), the more likely it is that the people at the top will wake up, and actually get the process started (one day)!

No sketchy, Oh wait I get what your saying.  Yes these guys are quite sick in the head believing the woes can be solved by a few Baht millionaires.

So the virus understands about money now.

This virus must be very smart
