Thailand reports 745 new COVID-19 cases, one more death

Thailand confirmed 745 new coronavirus cases on Monday.

 

Of the new cases, 152 were local transmissions and 577 were amongst migrant workers, the majority of which were discovered in Samut Sakhon and followed widespread testing.

 

A further 15 people have been discharged from hospital.

 

4,087 people remain in hospital or held in a migrant worker quarantine centre.

 

The new wave of COVID-19 infections is now present in 54 Thai provinces, Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesperson for the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said. 

 

Monday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 8,439, with 65 deaths. 

 

The news comes as Thailand has announced increased restrictions in 28 provinces on Monday.

 Yes sadly the spike will steepen over the next few days once the real impact of Xmas/New Year kicks in.

I agree, but in fairness the majority are migrant worker cases which had already been reported  yesterday.

Migrant workers reported yesterday  but not in yesterday figures see daily figures at top. 

We know testing only being done very minimal.

I could even have virus.

Thailand has pretty solid form in the area of making it seem like any foreign person who has the virus is bad and it is their fault, while any Thai person who has the virus is innocent and a victim of foreigners.  Even if the foreign person catches the virus from a Thai in Thailand, they are still treated as though they did it deliberately and maliciously.

The point will be to reinforce the idea that if migrant workers have it, it is their fault and they are bad.  That it is a foreign virus and foreigners are to blame.  This kind of racism or xenophobia seems to be a pretty essential part of Thai society, especially dealing with the virus.

Um, yep, that's what happens when you let a virus run free, soon soon it will be all 77 provinces due to an inept government not wanting to lose face.

It just goes to show, that when "widespread testing" is conducted in a very specific area, many positive cases are found!  No testing = No positive cases!  The government are very reticent about publishing the number of tests conducted and in which areas.  Surely they must have enough test kits as they purchased millions last Feb/March.  I read somewhere that Thai tests take 4-5 days to get result.  In UK, my son (NHS nurse) and daughter in law (NHS doctor)  self test 3 times a week and the test takes 35 minutes to get a result!  Wake up Thailand and get testing.

Yes. They do report internationally.  According to WHO, the important factor is tests per detected case, where Thailand excels. From ourworldindata.org. 

 

Caution, heads may explode as Thailand is ahead of both the UK and Taiwan.

Didn't Thailand invent a 30 minute covid test earlier in this pandemic?Must have been scraped as it might give the wrong impression and they might actually see what's actually happening, better off pixilating the virus info so we don't get scared and panic and potentially blame the wrong people for the pandemic.The targeted testing approach seems to target anybody but Thais.If we didn't test would more die?If you want to stop the pandemic you have to stop a virus that is 20 times smaller than a particle of cigarette smoke by entering the masked lockdown cycle which hasn't yet succeeded in stopping the virus spreading.

Hopefully there are no more numbers reported later today like yesterday.  This is getting confusing when you try to put it into perspective.  I would say it is like a company with many offices.  The corporate wants a financial report at Noon, and as you start to give it numbers keep on streaming in throughout the afternoon, no one on the same page and it makes the Person giving the report look like a fool.  Just my view, and not a bash.  Consistency and transparency during a situation like this is important for all to see as it shows strength instead of confusion.

the infections in migrants are for the most part people who live and work together ion a specific place so reflect a localized problem. Whereas other local cases reflect how widespread the problem has become/is becoming.

 

It is quite useful to look at these numbers separately.  We already know there has been considerable (and mostly asymptomatic) spread among migrant workers in Samut Sakhon. What remains to be seen is to what extent this has seeded clusters elsewhere and how fast those spread.

it is a separate active case-finding effort.  More frequent than every 2 weeks, but they do seem to announce the results in batches.

My sister a UK nurse tests herself 3 times a week results are back within an hour why not available here

I think the difference is that the migrant workers are fairly contained (with barbed wire), and that these cases represent less of a chance of causing additional local transmissions in other parts of the country. Singapore had a similar migrant worker outbreak, and they were able to minimize the impact to general transmissions. Hopefully Thailand can do a similar job, but might be too late for that.

From September 18 - Dec 13 Thailand were steady at 333 tests pr positive each day. 

 

Where are they getting those statistics from because that's a bit weird. 

 

Same with Taiwan from April - sep, or what am I missing ????

152 were local transmission, 745 were local transmission, the migrants didn't arrive yesterday, this migrant theme has been running for well over 3 weeks now.
