WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will rescind entry bans for most non-U.S. citizens who recently were in Brazil and much of Europe starting on Jan. 26, two officials briefed on the matter told Reuters on Monday.

Reuters first reported in November that the administration had been considering lifting the restrictions, imposed early last year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, after winning support from coronavirus task force members and public health officials.

The restrictions are set to end under a new proclamation from Trump the same day that new COVID-19 test requirements take effect for all international visitors. The White House did not immediately comment.

The restrictions have barred nearly all non-U.S. citizens who within the last 14 days have been in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the 26 countries of the Schengen area in Europe that allow travel across open borders.

The U.S. restrictions barring most visitors from Europe have been in place since mid-March, while the Brazilian entry ban was imposed in May.

The Trump administration imposed the bans in a bid to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed an order requiring nearly all air travelers to present a negative coronavirus test or proof of recovery from COVID-19 to enter the United States starting on Jan. 26.

Airlines had hoped the new testing requirements would clear the way for the administration to lift the restrictions that reduced travel from some European countries by 95% or more.

They pressed senior White House officials about the issue in recent days.

Reuters previously reported the White House was not considering lifting entry bans on most non-U.S. citizens who have recently been in China or Iran.

Surprised he hasn't ordered drone strikes on Detroit, Philadelphia, Atlanta yet.

maybe he is eyeing a trip for himself and family to Brazil and this greases the skids so to speak.  Maybe he wants to join the other "boys from Brazil" there.

does Brazil have an extradation treaty with the US?

 No.

But it is discretionary.  They can send you back with "we don't want you here."

I can't see DT liking the place.

400,000 dead not enough?

This order should help spread the highly contagious UK mutant super strain variant resulting in many deaths in the Biden era.

Trump likes to win, if more die under Joe, Trump will be claiming that as a win and he can brag that he handled covid better and “saved millions of lives”.

400,000+ more people dying will be of little concern to him as long as he can claim a win.

Is this his attempt to make the situation worse just prior to getting booted out of the white house (and possibly barred from running ever again)?

The adults taking over and there will be no lifting of travel restriction and instead will intensive measures.

"On the advice of our medical team, the administration does not intend to lift these restrictions on (Jan 26)," tweeted Jen Psaki, Biden's press secretary.

"In fact, we plan to strengthen public health measures around international travel in order to further mitigate the spread of COVID-19."

Trump Orders Lifting of Virus Travel Ban, but Biden Aides Vow to Block Move

WASHINGTON — President Trump on Monday ordered an end to the ban on travelers from Europe and Brazil that had been aimed at stopping the spread of the coronavirus to the United States, a move quickly rejected by aides to President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr., who said Mr. Biden will maintain the ban when he takes office on Wednesday.

...

But Jennifer Psaki, the incoming White House press secretary for Mr. Biden, said the new administration would not allow Mr. Trump’s directives to take effect.

“With the pandemic worsening, and more contagious variants emerging around the world, this is not the time to be lifting restrictions on international travel,” Ms. Psaki tweeted shortly after the White House issued Mr. Trump’s proclamation.

Trump is just playing games, trying to make things more difficult for the incoming administration.  Maybe he'll take a big dump on the resolute desk before he leaves.  A petulant child.

I am surprised he hasn't opened the US borders to everybody from everywhere !

He is just getting scared they won't let him out 555

does Brazil have an extradation treaty with the US?

Or does brazil help ex-presidents to arrange get amnesties /pardons?

Wouldn't put it past trump to get angry with Brazil gov't because they wouldn't help him to arrange pardons. After all he thinks he's the boss of the world.

Direct into Quantonomo bay would fix that dilemma.

Anyone would think though is unhappy with the current numbers in the pandemic he wants to keep increasing them. Can't run super spreader rallies so lets import carriers from all over the world to make things worse. Trump must really hate the USA and it people. Because even someone with a pea size brain would know the potential problem this may cause.

Stupid to the very end. Now for the mountain of pardons.

A parting gift from the disgraced soon-to-be ex president?

Presumably he is angry because at least in some part of his brain he must know that he really did lose the election, and it wasn't even close, so it's natural for him to be an enemy of those that don't love him which clearly represents the majority of the country.

Like his insurrectionist terrorist supporters did (they were attacking under "their" president's orders as has been widely quoted) in smearing caca at the capitol (literally).

He won't be so "America first" as soon as there's an interpol arrest order on his keister.

He was a richard for more than his time as 45, he is simply bowing out as an even bigger richard.

And still time to achieve richard to the nth degree.

As I've been saying for years, he always gets worse. But at least now, he will get worse without the awesome powers of the presidency.

Makes no sense, unless Trump wants to make the pandemic worse.

He's known to watch a lot of TV, perhaps there was a rerun of Apocalypse Now, and he thought, I can do that.
