Pattaya beer bar owners make plea for later opening - Expats don't come out until late and want to stay drinking

Reporters from We Love Pattaya went to Jomtien yesterday evening where they spoke with a delegation of beer bar owners who are not happy with the 11 pm closing.

But at least there was some good news - police were turning a bit of a blind eye to those not closing on the stroke of 11.

The delegation was led by Lisa Hamilton of Lisa Guesthouse and Restaurant that operates out of Soi Bunkanchanaram.

She said that bars in Jomtien and Pattaya first had to close for a month when the second wave of the pandemic came, now it is 11 pm.

They are all really hurting and the early closing is not helping one bit.

She explained that most of her customers were expats with families or long term foreign residents who don't get out until 8 or 9pm so they only have 2 or 3 hours to enjoy a beverage.

When last orders come they are often not at all happy, she said.

"They say things like 'Pattaya is a tourist town you know! Can't we stay?'", she said.

Some patrons linger on after closing but have to be reminded to leave as it is illegal to remain.

The owners present called for the state to increase closing time by 2 to three hours. They noted that Pattaya is supposed to be a world class resort and these draconian restrictions on their customer base were ridiculous.

They did however note that they were thankful to the Pattaya police for just issuing warnings to those that stayed open after hours.

Dim the lights, lock the doors, brown envelope, problem solved. You could even market it as an attraction - experience ye olde English pubbe lock-in.

well they might be if certain things happen and everybody knows exactly what I mean

and this is the only reason for this 11pm closing time - to screw bar owners for money and those that don't pay up will be raided - again getting screwed for money

there is no sensible reason for this 11pm closing, try asking those making the rules what is the reason and you will get no sensible answer because they don't have one, it certainly has nothing to do with the Chinese Virus

They noted that it takes nearer 5 hours for the customer to get drunk enough to stump up a bar fine.

They are using foreigner complaints as leverage. If they stay open longer they can make more money and have a better chance at recovering losses. Also girls that work the bar have a chance at more drinks which means more money they have a chance to send home

I agree.. and to a large degree, I think (my opinion only) is that this foreigner complaints “card” is their biggest and best card to play.

That said, I think they’d have a stronger hand if they could (or would) show the trickle down impact that reduced hours creates; ie lower staff tips = reduced spending on X, Y and Z...

i myself certainly wouldn’t try to trod out the Pattaya is a world-class resort “card” as I think that one is very questionable at best... plus, I think if you’re trying to move feelings /actions, you’re always better off to put it into terms of a person that another individual can relate to or visualize... a world-class resort is, to me, a hard to grasp and questionable visualization at best

curious asks how many ex-pats are in Pattaya

Blame the "quality" of the "journalism".

Yeah, that one at the end of the table didn't get the memo to dress appropriately...

...or maybe she did.

Why shouldn't Pattaya beer bar owners dictate government health policy?  ????

They've toned it down from a couple of days ago when there were 'demands' for later opening from bars....
