Oops! Mexican beauty queen shocks Thai Buddhists - and she hasn't even arrived!

The Miss Grand International Beauty Pageant has not even started but it is already mired in controversy.

That was assured after the Mexican contestant - shapely and vivacious Angela Yuriar - was pictured in a skimpy swimming costume alongside BUDDHIST IMAGES.

The pictures were taken before she came to Thailand and were snapped at a swimming pool where the images are a normal feature.

She quickly made her Instagram account private.

The pictures appeared on "Berng Nang Ngam" (gaze at beauty queens) a popular site on Facebook that is promoting the upcoming Miss Grand International 2020 to be held at Show DC Hall in downtown Bangkok on March 27th.

A post accompanying the pictures said that the beauty queen probably had no idea of the offence this might cause and would likely make an apology to explain things.

The beauty pageant will involve 14 day quarantine and Zoom technology reported Daily News who used the word "reverberate" in their headline suggesting trouble.

Ms Yuriar is listed as as an animal and nature lover in promo material.

Speaking of normal, this photo was taken yesterday in Phitsanulok.

  • Agree totally with the above comments.  Buddhism in Thailand is used selectively as a stick to beat people with; but studiously ignored when the scent of baht is in the air.

  • Jeez, here we go again. More moralistic outrage from the conservative minority. No doubt someone wearing a yellow tie will pop up and talk about offense to the nation.

Maybe she can gamble away some money by buying lottery tickets at the local temple to show her respect for the religion...

To a  Nation  following along with their  own brand of nonsense where images of the Buddha  are also not supposed to be, according to Monsieur Buddha, either  way taking offence is laughable.

But when it comes to bull fighting and cock fighting in Thailand the Thai Buddhist ranters seem not so “outraged”.

Can that be done?  Not sure I've ever seen any.

Religious imagery and symbols of the Christian faith. Don't Christians have something about no false idols? So in theory there are no symbols or imagery to defile?

Ever heard of Robert Mapplethorpe?

A popular image in Mexico.  Pretty impressive for a predominantly Catholic country.

Are you really so ignorant of Thailand's history and culture that you sexualize an innocent image and interpret it from the sexually screwed up mindset of a farang? Have you not made an effort to understand the local historical culture?  Long before Europeans with their repressed and deviant sexual mores arrived in Asia, Africa and the South Pacific, the locals went around topless. Female breasts were not sexual objects as they were in Christian countries.   In plain language, that is an image common of ancient Siam and features a woman of some wealth.

boobs-2

Above is mural paintings inside Wat Kaew, Chiang Rai. This is how women dressed in old Siam.

It is not pornography. Topless women were common up until the 1930's.

What the Mexican woman did was wrong because she sexualized a religious icon. It is no different than defiling  religious imagery and symbols of the Christian faith. The Mexican government would have been up in arms if she had posed lustfully with  a larger than life size religious icon of the Church of Rome.

No, It is you that sexualized her.

Exactly. But hypocrites are always right. ????

how much bigger we talking here....the pics are pretty girthy already.

The Buddha next to her in the OP image is far more attractive than she is.

Many quality Buddha statues are most beautiful art.

Well, I mean from the neck  up...

it would be very interesting to read the arguments about how the above could in any way be offensive.

So a false image in a jar of <deleted>. How is that defiling or worrying.

Difference between Christ and a picture of Christ? To hang up a picture you only need one nail.

Well from my POV it was art but it did offend a lot of Christians at the time.
