Tickets for fights at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium will only be sold to foreigners

Tickets for fights at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium will only be available to foreigners, it has been announced.

Tickets will only be sold to foreigners in order to help boost tourism and encourage foreigners to learn about Muay Thai, army chief Gen Narongphan Jitkaewtae said on Friday.

The move will also prevent locals from gambling at the event as the venue seeks to move away from its association with gambling, Bangkok Biz News reported.

The stadium will also change its name to the Royal Thai Army Sports Centre (Muay Thai Lumpinee) and a new management committee will be put in place to run the venue.

The stadium had been linked to an outbreak of COVID-19 in Bangkok last year.

More recently, hundreds of COVID-19 cases that were discovered in the second wave of infections in Thailand earlier this year were traced back to so-called illegal gambling dens.

The Lumpinee Boxing Stadium is due to reopen today (13 March).

So the bigger question is who will be fighting at Lumpinee.  If it is foreigners instead of Thai's then the stadium will be empty.  If it is Thai's and only foreigners can be spectators, well then the stadium will still be fairly empty.  Thai folks want to watch their own countrymen and women fight, and Lumpinee has always been the premier top stadium where Champions are made.  That's like saying only young children can go and watch the big boys box in Las Vegas.  It is always and always has been built on revenue from both gambling and selling seats.  Good luck, might as well start to tear the new building down and return to the old one.  Fools, or are they Tools with this new brain fart of an idea.

There will be no atmosphere whatsoever, if there are any customers.

Thinking about it they're proably negotiating with the Chinese group tour companies right now.

Really...now that’s interesting...

Thats the end of an era then. Bye bye Lumpinee . Well its gone anyway once the change the name but make it foreigners only no one will want to fight there.

You'll never take the gambling out of muay thai and I can't say anymore than that

Went there once looking for blood and guts, VIP ticket and all that, never again, talk about watered down Muai Thai. I'm guessing you have to pick your days, when the real fights are happening, as opposed to these sparring sessions I experienced. Having said that the gambling fraternity was still pretty active, interesting in itself to see this in action. More interested in them than the fights, which were a bit boring; both guys obviously had an understanding - I don't hurt you too much, you don't hurt me too much.

At least they will gamble on anything!

until they open up without quarantine, there wont be any foreigners to buy tickets. Would expect a mass exodus of the promoters as they will lose a ton of money putting on events without the gamblers

Hahaha, you just can't make this stuff up.

I have pondered for about 10 minutes, trying to come up with some sarcastic reaction to this ludicrous announcement. I couldn't. Even in a country notorious for its flawed logic and lack of rational decision-making, this truly is a new low.

It would be interesting to see Khun Pipat the tourism ministers slant on it!

Let's state some more linkage:

The Covid 19 outbreak was made possible by the high ranking military General in charge of the stadium, who famously ignored the government's orders to shut the venue. Now, why he would do such a thing could be anyone's idea, my own guess is it has something to do with Thai officialdom's favorite pastime. Can't say if this particular General was taken to task for his actions, i.e. made to compensate the public and businesses, as there was scant follow up on his fate. Now, why would there be no news about him could be anyone's idea, my own guess is it has something to do with Thai officialdom's second favorite pastime.

Now, they want foreigner's to fund these hobbies...

When no one shows up to see the Muay Thai fights, the formerly known Lumpinee stadium will turn into a indoor Cock Fighting ring, with the locker rooms full of rooster cages.  Get your souvenir chicken blood stained shirt and a set of spurs for just a few baht from the super shop....

Let's see how our resident "they don't want us here!!" whingers will spin this one...

Just what I was thinking. These Thai basher are becoming unbearable, it shouldn't be allowed.

This is a positive news for foreigners yet the replies are far from thankful.

Next it will be "Farang" night only at the cock fights! ????

The only Farang who go to watch live Muay Thai are tourists!

The rest of us have seen it  often enough to tick it  off our bucket list.

The big fights will be live on Thai TV so how does this prevent the Thais (or others) in taking part in an illegal activity?

This is really stupid even by recent Thai "standards"!

Oh dear, back to sex discussions again said the two ladyboys!

This concept might also work for casinos.

or do it the Singapore way by making it too expensive for the locals to enter..

The fights are going to be televised so that Thais can watch them.  Considering the lack of care about the disease it makes sense the last that was published was that no one was going to be let in.
