BREAKING: 1,443 new cases reported today and four more deaths. The number of people on ventilators has also increased to 55 people. Full update with details at 11:30am

So tiring to see this and to know that the 4 deaths could have possibly been prevented had travel been stopped for Songkran.  The sad reality is that 2 were 78 years old, one was 86 and then one was only 30.  Sure the 30 year old was obese and ran with the Thonglor groups, but 30 is still way to young to die had preventive measures been adhered to by the clubs.

Thailand on Tuesday reported more than 1,000 new COVID cases for the 7th consecutive day, while the number of patients reported on ventilators rose from 41 to 55 in the past day, and tripled from 16 just 5 days ago.

Tuesday's 1,443 new COVID case tally was a 3.8% increase over the 1,390 new cases reported Monday. Thailand hasn't had fewer than 1,000 new COVID cases since April 13.

On Monday, the government reported that among all the hospitalized COVID patients, 163 were considered in "serious" condition. That number rose to 223 by Tuesday (although a spokesman also reported that number as 222).

Tuesday also was the fourth consecutive day the country reported new COVID deaths bringing the nation's total to 108 from the pandemic, with the four new cases mostly involving elderly patients.

According to a government spokesman, the new deaths included:

--a bed-bound 78-year-old Thai woman from Bangkok with pre-existing conditions,

--a 78-year-old Thai man from Bangkok with pre-existing conditions,

--a bed-bound 86-year-old Indian national woman with pre-existing conditions, and

--a 30-year-old overweight Thai businessman with a history of visiting Thong Lo entertainment venues that have been said to be the origin of the country's latest COVID outbreak.

The total 16,119 COVID positive cases hospitalized has more than doubled over the past week. Under government policy, anyone testing positive for COVID is supposed to be hospitalized in some kind of facility.

The government graphic below shows Tuesday's report of total number of hospitalized COVID cases, the subset of those in hospitals, the smaller group is alternate facilities, and then the number of COVID patients on ventilators.

Better to see fewer new cases than a new all time high.

For the second straight day, Thailand reported two provinces with more than 100 new COVID cases. And a spokesman said 68 of Thailand's 77 provinces had new cases in Tuesday's report.

Bangkok had 350 new cases in the past day, now for a total of 3,965 new cases since the beginning of the country's so-called "third wave" of COVID outbreaks that began at the beginning of April.

The other province, Chiang Mai, had 116 new cases in the past day, for a total of 2,366 since the beginning of the month.

Altogether, Thailand has reported 16,177 new domestic cases since the beginning of April.

Below are today's province by province report of new COVID cases, along with the prior day's report for comparison.

The number of new cases seem to be inline with Thailands flat earth line policy but the deaths seem to be rising with 3 yesterday and 4 reported today from the occasional 1 every now and then.

Shortage of beds delays hospitalisation for 600 Covid-19 patients in Bangkok

Some 600 Covid-19 patients in Bangkok are forced to stay in isolation at home due to shortage of beds in hospitals for treatment.

Dr Suksan Kittisupphakorn, director of Bangkok Medical Service Department, said on Monday that there were“505 patients who had been waiting since earlier this month, and today 99 more people have been confirmed as infected after their second test,” he said.

“We expect to transport them to a field hospital within one or two days, as officials are adding more beds to field hospitals in the province and expect to treat an additional 2,926 patients.”

Note, on Monday, Ministry of Public Health officials reported that more than two-thirds of the nation's 9,000+ hospital beds suitable for treating COVID cases were occupied, supposedly leaving more than 3,000 available. But the MoPH officials didn't provide a breakdown on the hospital bed use/occupancy situation only for Bangkok, which has more COVID cases than any other province.

-------------------------

The Public Health Ministry has insisted that hospitalization was still compulsory for all COVID-19 patients but that mild and asymptomatic cases could be sent to field hospitals and "hospitels".

Department of Medical Services (DMS) Director-General Dr Somsak Akksilp said fears over the current situation related to long waits for hospital beds rather than a shortage of beds and coordinated efforts were already being made to address the issue.

He said all hospitals under the ministry's supervision were being instructed to set aside ICU beds as more severe cases were anticipated this week and the department is working closely with medical schools in the management of ICU beds.

Phuket tightens rules for visitors to enter the province from tomorrow

Phuket Public Health Office has said that those who wish to enter the province must provide a vaccination certificate of two doses or a Covid-free certificate.

"The measure will be enforced from April 21 until 30,” said the announcement on its Facebook page on Monday. “The test for Covid-free certificate must be taken within 72 hours of entry into the province.

Those who do not have a certificate can take a rapid test at Phuket International Airport and Tha Chatchai border checkpoint, at a cost of Bt300 per person.”

The checkpoint at the airport will screen travellers from every province who wish to enter Phuket, while the Tha Chatchai checkpoint will screen only those who have travelled from 17 red zone provinces.

And now the other shoe drops, and reality sets in.  This is just showing how unprepared and far from ready for an outbreak this government really was.

Ko Kut closed after 2 Covid cases found

Ko Kut in Trat province announced on Tuesday that it was closed to tourists as two Covid-19 cases had been found on the island.

Ko Kut has been popular with domestic tourists lately, drawing thousands of visitors during holiday periods this year.

The resort island has been closed to arrivals until further notice.

Covid spreading throughout the country after Songkran Holidays

New Covid-19 hot spots have been identified throughout the country after the Songkran holiday, a possible side effect of widespread traveling during the break, as the public health sector scramble to get the situation under control.

The current wave of the pandemic began in entertainment districts in the capital before spreading to the greater Bangkok Area. Bangkok has seen the largest number of cases by far with 3,615 cases [as of Monday] since the outbreak began.

Surrounding provinces including Nonthaburi and Samut Prakarn were directly impacted by the Bangkok cluster with both recording around 700 new cases since the month began.

As you've quite rightly pointed out, this could have been stopped or certainly reduced had travel been barred at Songkran, there is no getting away from this fact and those lack of measures are now showing their results, now fanning the flames of the much more dangerous variant.

So during covid, the deaths - like other countries - 75% more chance of dying if you are already over Thailand's (or own countries) average life expectancy. 77 for thailand.

Take those that die older tham life expectancy out and the figure change dramatically. protect the old and infirm, clean your hands and open up as we are destroying too much now

Meanwhile, the government also reported Tuesday that new COVID cases linked to the original Bangkok entertainment venues outbreak had now spread to 71 of the country's 77 provinces.

The only provinces to not report such COVID cases thus far are Chainat, Pattani, Narathiwat, Yala, Satun and Ranong.

Earlier this month, the government reported that some types of new COVID cases had already spread to all 77 provinces in the country.

A second day of no increase in cases (wonder how the "exponential growth" members will spin this) and a 25% decline in new daily infections from the recent highs. Maybe exponential decline?

Capped testing, and it's not a twist, it's reality.

There are only a limited number of beds available, as per the Government's policy (which seems to be changing), so caps are being placed on testing as we speak, which produce the illusion of a plateau.

Yes, God bless the entertainment they are not responsible for any of this....................

Why wouldn't they cap testing at zero if this was the case?
