Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his government are suffering a barrage of attacks from critics and political rivals as Thailand is hit by a third wave of COVID-19 infections.

Some observers are warning of a popular uprising if the government fails to tackle this fresh outbreak successfully.

The attacks came after the number of daily infections rose past 2,000 over the past week, up from less than 100 before the fresh outbreak. Saturday alone saw a record 2,839 infections with deaths from COVID-19 hitting an alarming number of eight on Saturday and 11 on Sunday.

there was nothing they could do, and TBH, I don't think they managed the initial version well, they were just better at hiding the numbers, just like China did

  • Cant' have that now, can we! Service the tanks!

Stormy waters, how about a category 3 hurricane is starting its sweep and will be picking up speed as it grows.

Remember the good old days when just ONE case in Rayong sent the surrounding provinces in a panic?

Thailand was the poster child for Covid success. Then greed and stupidity took over, and now here we are. India version 2.0

I gotta say that an "uprising" right now will just throw the country into total disarray.

It is not the time    ,,,,,,,,,,think about it

Be very careful what you ask for !!!

I think they're onto something with the idea that there will be a serious public backlash against the government unless it gets matters under control. Roughly speaking, many if not most young people are contemptuous of this government. Meanwhile, many older people, especially in the middle classes, and still willing to support the government due to their lifelong belief in and respect for the power structure that appoints it. This latter group contains many of the people most at risk of serious illness and death if they contract Covid, and they will not thank the government if it lets them down by failing to get the outbreak under control, or messes up the vaccination programme even more than they already have. In that scenario, the young would still detest Prayut and all that his government stands for, but they might now be joined by many of the people wearing yellow apparel who would normally be cheering the government on.

To be fair Thailand did manage the initial virus period well but they've been left hot footed with this new strain. Plenty of warning about it but they failed to take heed and boom!

They could do plenty, they knew it was the new variant before Songkran yet still allowed Thailand wide travel for millions.

I'll have to agree to disagree on their handling of the previous year however as their management of quarantine entry has worked very well. They've failed big time with vaccine plan of course. Are their missing numbers from deaths or cases, yes sure but I think thats the same in all countries bar a few exceptions

This kind of situation is why I left Thailand in February of 2020. When society collapses and goes into anarchy, one place I would not like to be in would be a 3rd world country as a foreigner.

He squashed all attacks on the street using the emergency decree but he can't stop the internet.

The very initial stages were handled horribly, January-April 2020. Thailand simply got lucky in this period. From May until recently they have been very strict. It's funny looking back at some old posts.

Did you mean the generals....lol Thailand did well to contain the initial outbreaks compared to most countries that cannot be denied, however it cost them dearly and all that work is now being undone by their current stupidity.

but it was Euro/UK incompetence with unchecked disease transmission  which bred this variant the world has suffered over..

I get your point, but that could be debated as it was not only the UK, there are other countries with more significant variants any one of which could come in, Brazil, South Africa, India. The worry is that as Thailand was/is unprepared with vaccine deployment, it makes it more likely that new variants could also be borne here?

anything is possible now. But if countries (and their selfish people) would of acted responsibly instead of falling apart, many lives could of been saved. Those in moral comas will always deny this I'm sure..

It will never happen unless Thai men get a backbone. Remember no Thai gets into a fight unless is it 10:1 and let's not bring up Muay Thai, the biggest sporting fix in Thailand.  That leaves only the women, the real workers in this country.

I have a feeling that the 'use by date' for this government is approaching rapidly, best if it was chucked on the rubbish tip before it damages the country any further, and the day of a popular uprising is not too far away.
