Higher, faster, deadlier: Third wave of COVID triggers growing fear in Thailand

How can anybody be confused at the proposition that the solution to covid 19 is the effective vaccination of the population as we are witnessing in other parts of the world especially the UK and USA?

According to data coming out of Australia, about 30% of unvaccinated infected patients are having to deal with long-term lung damage, requiring months of rehabilitation.

OTOH, data from around the world is saying even when a vaccinated person becomes infected with the less efficacious vaccines such as Astra Zeneca, their recovery is no worse than a mild flu.

Highly transmissible virus, lack of an effective vaccine, probably followed by the lack of an effective vaccine roll out, they will open up too early and face further waves.......something like that?

<deleted>. It's 30% of infected Australians who went into the ICU who have long-term lung damage.

Thank you. Precisely! Yet some people put 'confused ' emojos on such statements!

I'll butt in here.

1 - The virus shows absolutely no sign of being defeated, at the very best only being contained by those lucky enough to get the vaccine.

2 - It is constantly evolving and becoming stronger, faster and more deadly.

3 - The response to it by many, not necessarily in Thailand but certainly in many other countries and encouraged by irresponsible leaders, means that wave after wave is being experienced. Thailand, though, has its own problem in leaky borders and sometimes officials who are momentarily blinded by baht as people cross the border.

4 - It is being spread by many who do not take the situation seriously enough and/or who are now suffering lockdown fatigue.

5 - The only way to get rid of the virus, stop it spreading, is to close down everything - and I mean everything - for a period of three weeks. But that isn't possible, so compromises are put in place. Compromises that are pretty much useless, like closing certain businesses, curfews, no alcohol etc.

The human race has been given a test by nature and it has not come out of it very well so far. It is far from over, and I agree that it will be well into next year at the very earliest that life will get anywhere close to normal again. Remember when people were saying it would all be over by last year's (northern) summer?

Good post, thank you Barry.

Something I would like to add is that Western governments seem to be using every chance possible to put the fear of God into the people. In the UK, cases are now very, very low, but instead of saying that they're saying "look at what's going on in India, that could happen here if we're not careful" - it's scaremongering and there's obviously something odd going on.

It almost seems like some people in government have a vested interest in keeping lockdowns going on for as long as possible. We were told last year that once the vulnerable were vaccinated, everything would go back to normal, but lo and behold it was a lie.

Thais show a high degree of conformist, cooperation  and social  responsibility in these matters.

It was quite eye-opening to see how Thais (maybe Asians in general) act like the adults in the room whereas our oh so well educated Western societies managed to produce all those Covidiots acting like toddlers who don’t wanna eat their spinach or teenagers believing some YouTube channel’s science fiction stories. Seeing some of the embarrassing stuff happening in our Western home countries I must say I’m glad to be living among sober-minded people here in Thailand; if we could just get rid of some lo-so sexpats who are wearing the same tinfoil hats…

Thailand is underreporting because look at what happens if you get caught with COVID.

Not that it really matters.  The cases are what they are.

the good news is I hear reports of Bangkok seeming abandoned.  That is good - that is how you break transmission!

My experiences are that Thais are scared-stiff of the virus. Most people in the West are educated sufficiently to know what a virus actually is, and can understand what a 99.5% survival rate means. Thai just hear that people are dying and poo their pants.

Looking at this post I am not so sure about the “educated sufficiently” part. Reducing a virus to a “survival rate” sounds more like the simplistic thinking you hear from a barstool in Pattaya.

The whole point of the safety measures that are in place makes organising a protest against the Government pretty difficult!

You do know how many people die during a normal year, right? It's something like 50 million. Instead of looking at just a raw figure try understanding it in context.

And who will Police the Home Quarantines.

I agree 100 % with what you are saying, but this is Thailand and it is similar to herding Cats in getting the Thai population to adhere to anything on a Voluntary basis

The Police should Police the home quarantines - get them to work for their wages.

And regarding your comment regarding getting Thais to do anything on a voluntary basis obviously carries some weight, but all the Thais I know are terrified of catching Covid and are wearing masks - even on motor bikes - often without a helmet. So although it is illegal to ride a motor bike without a helmet, they seem to readily take to wearing masks (OK, now we have 20,000 baht fines in the equation) but even before that, in my area, the masks outnumbered the helmets substantially!

What nonsense ! It was your so called 'responsible Thais ' that started the new increase and spread it with their gatherings .

Divide & Conquer

I am puzzled by these figures. I have never met anybody who has had the virus. All I get is "you cannot go to any Big C because a (one) customer who tested positive had visited Big C Mae Hia (17 km away), or you cannot go to the market because "I heard that somebody in the neighbouring village has been taken to hospital". There is so much misinformation circulating that I suspect people with their own agenda stand to profit.

All the locals in my moban are keeping indoors as much as possible, mask wearing is 100%.  The usual group of gamblers and drinkers continue to meet discreetly in the back shop. There have been only two deaths so far this year neither Covid related.

As I said, none of my wife's extended family nor acquaintances have contracted the virus nor known anybody who has.

Mentally prepare for the lockdowns.  They get tough after a few months ????

They are just warning people about what could happen. Common sense. New waves do come.

No western government has a vested interest in lockdowns..they love tax revenue.

I live in Australia and it is pretty much back to normal..the scaremongers ended up being the the paranoid and in my opinion deluded and selfish who accused their governments of  having a hidden agenda,  instead of understanding that they are just looking to get through this, without too much loss of life.

From time to time they may be over careful but look at Australia now.

Did the UK not move away from ventilators quite early on as they were found not too work or worse trigger a negative response in patients?

The 'amazing' UK ventilator challenge resulted in the government buying 30,000 ventilators and only using 2000+............

         Grants , bribes .   etc ...

Another one surprised that responsible citizens and controls prevents cases.

If you want to meet lots of COVID cases, you need to go to Western countries that let it get out of hand.  Maybe you can also find some anti-maskers.

You have to wonder with a lack of beds and those not being moved to a hospital from homes how many deaths above those reported there may be.

A whole lot more, when you look at what has happened to other Nations around the world one has to question the figures that have been published for Thailand last year, especially since the oversite committee has demonstrated such a level of ignorance and incompetence over recent months. We will never know the actual figures.

It took about one and a half year that 0.04% of the world population died by or with this virus.

Source: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

In short, I reckon there are other issues on this planet that are more frightening and deadlier under these circumstances.

Is that a mitigation view or a denier view. You have me confused.  Research Long Covid and get back to us.

Neither nor. It is just an objective statement. Personal interpretation up to you.
