BANGKOK (NNT) - During a meeting at Government House with business leaders on Wednesday, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has promised to closely collaborate with the private sector to speed up the vaccine rollout and achieve the target of inoculating 50 million people by year’s end.

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said Gen Prayut stressed the role of the government in helping business leaders, including the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Federation of Thai Industries to acquire more vaccines and accelerate distribution.

The key meeting was called to help the government tackle the slow pace of its fight against Covid-19, as the new wave of the epidemic further weakens the economy. Business groups estimated the latest outbreak would reduce economic growth by 1.2 percentage points.

Meanwhile, Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) Chairman Sanan Angubolkul said the private sector is ready to support the public sector in speeding up alternative sources of vaccines so that they can be provided in time and support the government sector to manage the distribution of vaccines thoroughly and efficiently.

He said 2,629 companies are set to provide financial support to procure almost one million doses of vaccines, adding that vaccinations for 50 million people can create herd immunity and lead to confidence in the private sector that Thailand is ready to reopen by early next year.

So they will buy from the government now and not elsewhere.  Got it....how else can the rich become richer....

Thursday gaslighting session over. Ok, so much for this morning.  It's back to Better Call Saul.

as suspected, the government has forced private sector to buy locally made AZ. Probably much over $7.66 procured by the government.

That one would very likely be delayed by months, judging by misleading,  vague and contradictory dates given in statements.

It also means, no vax for foreigners this year, which hope was in private import, with a choice of 3 producers.

This mob are paying over 20USD for a dose of the almost useless Chinese vaccine. Seems like more of a rip off than even a 100% mark up on the AZ product! And as for Sputnik, the Brazilian regulator found it was unsafe and has refused to approve it. It was capable of infecting the patient with the adenovirus vector that was supposed to have been deactivated. So there is no way that I am allowing any vaccine supplied by the Thai government into my body.

I don't see how the private sector buying vaccines from the government is going to 'speed things up'.  Especially with the government having no vaccines to actually buy.  But they have to come up with their quota of blah, blah, blah every day.

Course Changed! Government says private sector has no need to order vaccines

They all need to get on the same page and get their stories straight.  The bad optics are getting worse by the day.  The entire cabinet looks incompetent by their own flip-flopping, indecision, and what seems to be outright lies. That's pretty sad.

Monopolies are much more important than the Public Health and Welfare of Thai citizens.  What if a few commoners die?  <shrug>

It seems, either The Thai Enquirer got their original report wrong, or, their original report embarrassed the government and forced another change of thinking... Have no idea, other than that this was today's new update from the TE:

[Update-1] Government clarifies, says private businesses should not look to import vaccines

"Thailand’s government clarified its position on Thursday regarding the importation of vaccines by private entities by saying that hospitals will still be welcomed to find vaccines while private businesses should wait for the government’s program.

...

With mounting criticism, the government clarified its position on Thursday by saying that the Thai Chamber of Commerce statement applied to only private business looking to vaccinate their staff and not private hospitals looking to purchase vaccines.

The government said that it will continue to expedite and allow private hospitals to acquire their own vaccines to supplement the national pool.

Except, the Enquirer still reported just the day before complaints from various private hospital officials that they were getting nowhere in terms of getting government support or clearances to actually acquire any vaccines on their own...  So... who knows!
