PHUKET:-- Local expat Eric Smulders has launched a campaign urging people to support the wife of the noodle vendor shot by a drunken off-duty Phuket police officer on Bangla Rd earlier this year.

Kulthida Chananan, 26, told The Phuket News on Wednesday (May 12) that so far she has received just B20,000 from the Royal Thai Police after Cpl Pornthep Channarong, an officer with the Phuket Provincial Police at the time, shot her husband Aroon Thongplab while drunk on Patong’s main nightlife entertainment street in the early hours of Feb 23.

Pornthep, who has been stripped of his rank and dismissed from the police force, shot noodle vendor Mr Aroon, 25, just before 6am while Mr Aroon was returning from collecting a noodle bowl from a customer down the street.

Happen everywhere in Thailand also also many other countries...........but this is about donation and to help the victim family, not a travel warning to avoid Phuket.

I'd be willing to throw in if I can be assured that I'm not making some Thai lawyer's next BMW payment.

“I do not know how to handle this horrible calamity that hit our little family: we were happy and content with our simple food stall business where I helped him [husband Aroon] wherever I could, with the grandmother looking after the children.

“Due to COVID Soi Bangla is closed and so is our mee [noodle] business, which before provided us with sufficient income. I cannot face all the expenses as we need to move to a larger room to accommodate my family, my grandmother and the medical needs of my husband,” Ms Kulthida said.

“I am desperate for help until at least we can restart the food stall. Then with the help of the whole family we can hopefully provide for ourselves again, hopefully with my husband also helping from a wheelchair or looking after the kids,” she said.

Absolutely heartbreaking.  Multi-million dollar settlement in any Western country.  In Thailand?

It is already an improvement that he has been sacked. I remember a decade ago, policemen who went in the fault big time, would be forced to wear a pink hello kitty bracelet ( counterfeit one of course) for a period of time

i would caution any expat to get involved in any activism in Thailand, it may burn your ar@e

Well done Eric….this is a worthy cause that any number of people could gladly support.

But…the following condition does prompt a question…..

“After you make the transfer please inform me via email [email protected], by LINE ID tum_jaruwan or by mobile: 081 8931647,” Ms Jaruwan noted.

Why would the lawyer mentioned need to keep track of donations?

Honest question.

Policeman relieved of duty and not charged with assault? Are policemen exempt from criminal charges in Thailand?

The bank account is that of the wife, not lawyer.   If you donate, you are asked to forward details to the lawyer, as this will be used by Eric Smulders who has commited to matching whatever you donate (up to a cumulative total of 100,000 baht).

Because of Eric's commitment to match donations up to a cumulative maximum of 100,000 baht.   I guess that there may be some tax relief for Eric for charity donations, though this would be minor.

Attempted murder is given a pass for off-duty cops.  They just get sacked and everything is then Ok.

I would feel better if Eric Smulders was commenting directly to this forum and clearly explaining the plan.

I don't think Eric has to explain or justify anything other than the details contained in the article which are quite clear.   I have made a contribution, and checked the name of the bank account holder, and it is indeed the wife.

Imo make an example of that disgraced ex cop totally unessary and heartbreaking my condolences to the bereaved family

The 20.000 came from Police. I wonder if the government will have more support for that family

I guess for the same reason you would want your donation tracked to insure the money goes to the correct person

An absolute tragedy affecting the lives of many.

I commend the actions of the ex pat,  but shouldn't it be the responsibility of the authorities (who no doubt are devoted to their Buddhist faith) to do goodness, (Thai expression).

There is absolutely no compassion or empathy for their fellow man.

Anywhere else but Thailand. Certainly
