Prison inmates in urgent need of vaccines

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Minister of Justice has asked Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirkul for COVID-19 vaccines to halt the fast rising infection rate in prisons.

 

Somsak Thepsuthin, Minister of Justice said the fastest way to stop infections in prisons is to have prison inmates and officers who have not been infected yet vaccinated. The Minister of Justice has also requested doses of vaccine from Anutin Charnvirakul, Public Health Minister.

 

Though many cases have been found in prisons, they were all identified in specific places such as Chiang Mai and Narathiwat prisons.

 

Minister Somsak added that it is well-known that space per person for Thai prison inmates is much less than standard. Currently, each Thai prisoner has less than a 1.2 square meter space which is around half the size of the international standard of 2.25 square meters per prisoner.

 

In order to expand the space, requires around 150 billion baht to build hundreds more prisons, as one prison costs 1.5 billion baht to build.

 

So building more prisons is impossible for now.

Two thoughts occur to me about this:

 

1. I wonder whether expats in Thailand will end up coming before or after prison inmates in Thailand's COVID vaccine lottery.

 

2. I wonder if someone somewhere in Thai government has considered that their current vaccine policy toward inmates might be one way of helping them reduce their prison overcrowding problem.

One of the consequences to their procrastination over buying in Vax rather than put all the eggs in one basket .. and it won't get better in the short term rather only the fog of misinformation will get thicker about the true depth of the problem as they try and bluff their way out of it ..

The government said a couple weeks back, when the prison cases first started exploding, that they were going to vaccinate all their inmates, which is a huge group of 300,000+ people. Now today, above, they sound like they haven't actually done it yet and are asking for a vaccine supply.

 

Sounds vaguely familiar to their pledge to vaccinate foreign nationals in Thailand. Oh yes, we will vaccinate you all, please go and register.... And when people try, they're either turned away or end up dealing with places that claim they don't actually have any vaccines as yet available to give, and don't know when they will.

How about refraining from locking up such a large part of the population, often for petty crimes and much too long?

 

That the prisons are unsanitary and overcrowded is a travesty at the best of times, and a catastrophe during a pandemic!

Your  No.2 thought is a simplistic continuation of the myth that covid-19 is some horrific  death sentence.

The reality is that there is existing and incremental  evidence that the  more devastating impact is the  lasting and potentially  long term damage done to those who survive infection which means an accompanying cost to the social health budget paid from a less productive population.

The Thai prison system has previously existing massive health issues in terms of serious communicable diseases such as hepatitis and tb as examples. Add to that the myriad of other prior historic annual viral or bacterial epidemics that in circumstances prior to covid-19 becoming a focal fascination and the associated death toll of prisoners would take on more significant relevance if sly genocide was an intent !

Prison is an ideal environment for the government to isolate and protect those few people who are at risk from Covid-19. Healthy young to middle aged people don't face a significant risk. The prison population can be allowed to develop herd immunity.

You must publish your genius insight on herd immunity because to date there is no evidence that there is herd immunity in those not vaccinated. To date the experience indicates that antibodies are relatively shortlived (less than 1 year) and new variants are not stopped by previous infections.

This isn't the great plague. We are not tripping over bodies in the street. Life will be better, on balance, if we treat Covid like a seasonal flu. Deaths from despair, economic destruction, loss of freedom, are costs too.

 

I haven't seen anything which causes me to worry about Covid itself, or so called new variants, or the regular flu/colds. The problem has been government over reaction.

there is a firefighter team, but they have only 1 bucket of water to use to fight the flames

they could have more water, if only the company actually still busy to dig a well finally finds the water

Work to reduce the wealth divide and the entitlement of the rich by implementing continuous and aggressive measures that provide opportunities to the mere mortals and we won't have 80% of the prison population banged up for petty drug and theft related crimes.  I can't see it happening though, even many farang look it at in black and white 'drugs = throw key away', building more prisons or more prison space is the wrong way.

It takes time to build immunity. It's weeks between doses, and weeks more before relatively solid protection kicks in. Literally they are 4-5 months late with this.

What’s your point ? We are over the main waves in many countries who have not treated it like a flu and still suffered greatly. Please give us your case number/fatality predictions with no restrictions and lockdowns. You are dreaming if after what has happened over the last year, you think late-comers (like Thailand) are suddenly deciding to change COVID management approach.

Interesting, I think back to overflowing wards of people on ventilators in Italy, body bags being carried to freezer vans in New York (mortuaries were full) and glassy eyed victims gasping for air in tuk-tuks in Delhi. If that doesn’t worry you, fair enough.

Well Thailand may have low COVID death numbers but the herd immunity stuff is not
