Thailand announces new speed limits: Motorcycles will be limited to 60 kmph in Bangkok and Pattaya

Deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Traisaranakul said that the cabinet had given the green light to change existing speed limits for trucks, school buses, buses, truck trailers and motorcycles in Bangkok, Pattaya and built up areas. 

 

The decision still needs to be rubber stamped with a royal decree. 

 

The main change is that trucks with a weight of 2,200 kgs, passenger vehicles with more than 15 people, school buses and motorcycles will only be allowed to go a maximum of 60 kmph in Bangkok, Pattaya and built up areas, reported Manager. 

 

Truck trailers, four wheelers and three wheelers will be limited to 45 kmph.

 

Outside city limits the limit will be 80 kmph for trucks and buses and just 70 for motorcycles and school buses. 

 

Trailers, four and three wheelers will be limited to 55 kmph.

 

On four lane roads with a central median trucks will be able to go 80, school buses and motorcycles 80 and others 65 kmph.

 

Traisuree said that the law changes will bring Thailand in line with international regulations. 

 

Thaivisa notes that much has been made of transport minister Saksayam Chidchob's moves to change speed limits on large roads with no u-turns for cars up to 120 kmph.

 

The reality for inner city driving and most other vehicles the limits are far slower.

Until they employ enforcement its just another pointless "seen to be doing" .

 

What they need is law enforcement and real consequences not petty 200 baht nothing fines that deter no one !

To have these vehicles driving at different speeds means constant over takings which are dangerous.

 

Most built up areas have fairly limited overtaking space so if you have a bus in front of you there will be no way to pass.

 

How will you know if you are in a built up area or within city limits, is Jomtien part of Pattaya or where are the limits. Will there be speed signs everywhere so everyone know what the speed limit is for the various vehichles at various locations?

 

Enforce the helmet law to start with and make sure everyone have a valid license.

I travel at the speed or slightly above the speed of vehicles around me, I would be feeling very exposed if I was going slower 

 

set a speed limit for the area not the vehicle and enforce it - how simple can it be

At the moment the speed limit is 80km/h in built up areas unless signage says something else. This means that the speed limit on soi Bukaow or soi postoffice in Pattaya is 80km/h. This is crazy.

 

The speed limit on Sukhumvit is 90km/h and when you get off Sukhumvit towards Pattaya or Jomtien it should be 50 or 60km/h for all vehichles.

Another stupid law. A bit like motorcycles having to stay in the left lane while buses and taxis constantly cut across you slamming on their brakes to pick up passengers.

 

Now motorcycles are supposed to go slower than the general traffic flow? Getting overtaken by arrogant, inept drivers who can't judge distance properly.

 

No thanks. For the sake of my personal safety, I won't be abiding by this law. Fortunately the police are too lazy to enforce it anyway.

Just because there's a speed limit, doesn't mean you have to travel at it, it's a limit, not a designated speed for the road.

I know but you are still allowed to travel at that speed on these roads and that is crazy. It should be down to 50km/h but normally you will have to drive slower anyway on these roads because of traffic.
