Popular Post webfact
Buddhist monks wearing protective plastic suit prepares for arrival of people at the Wat Saphan temple converted as an isolation centre for Covid-19 coronavirus patients in Bangkok on April 29, 2021. (Photo by Lillian SUWANRUMPHA / AFP) The Thai Sangha Supreme Council has approved the use of a Pali word, “COVIDDHO”, to stand for coronavirus 19 or COVID-19. According to the Facebook page about the news of Buddhist activities, the National Office of Buddhism has sought advice from three Pali language experts about the conversion of COVID-19 into an official Pali word during the delivery of a sermon, organized for May 11th to bless Thailand and the Thai people in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The three experts are Phra Dhamma Rachanuwat of Wat Molilokayaram in Bangkok Yai district, Phra Thepsakawongbandhit of Wat Bovornnives Vihara in Phra Nakhon District, and Captain Thongyoi Saengsinchai, a representative of the Bureau of the Royal Household. Popular Post mtls2005
Took a while... "There was extensive debate by participants in the meeting about the transliteration of the English acronym, COVID-19, into Pali. It was agreed at the meeting, with advice from the three experts, that the English alphabet had to be converted into the Latin alphabet and then into Pali." Looking forward to the Pali word for "government incompetence". 3

KhunBENQ
Quote It was agreed at the meeting, with advice from the three experts, that the English alphabet had to be converted into the Latin alphabet and then into Pali. ? ???? Is this by chance lost in translation from Thai? What is the challenge of "English alphabet" to Latin alphabet? Did they seriously "work" on transcription of the Thai transcription of Covid 19??? All in all three experts must have had a hard time.

It is also the case that Latin was the language used in Rome. 2

internationalism
as pali, as well as latin, are dead languages (no any population uses it for communication), translating new words into them is useless. Straight from any international language used locally will be enough. I bet Vatican and catholic churches in all countries are using official name for this illness. What mess will be, when sangha in each country will approve different names for covid. Surely, that's a high chance for miscommunication. Thai sangha doesn't have the right to approve new words for pali, which is language for religious ceremonies. Probably some international buddhist body can create words for new religious meanings Edited June 5, 2021 by internationalism

Misterwhisper
From the full article: "...advice from the three experts that the English alphabet had to be converted into the Latin alphabet" Uh-huh, very interesting. So what did that look like then... the Latin alphabet after it was converted from the English alphabet? Something like that, perhaps?: Covid-

Because all those who control any religion want to demonstrate their superiority over mere mortals and what better way than by having their own 'higher' language only they understand. It was the same with the old Christian Church holding ceremonies in Latin, a language virtually none of the congregation would have understood. 1

Dogmatix
Funny that they are inventing silly new words in Pali which is not their language and only spoken very badly by Thai monks in a thick Thai accent. Perhaps Sri Lanka will invent some new Thai words.
