Third wave of Covid-19 devastates Thai hotel industry - May/June only 6% occupancy

The Thai Hotel Association has reported that hotel occupancy for May and June is just 6%.

In the Central Region in May it was 10% and in the South just 3% giving this average that is expected to continue in June, said THA chief Marisa Sukosolnunphakdee.

She appealed for more government asistance for the ailing sector, reported Thansettakij.

Some 57% of hotels have stopped taking bookings altogether as the third wave of Covid-19 infection continues to devastate the country.

At the moment only 38% of hotels nationwide are operating normally with 41% operating in some capacity and 20% closed temporarily.

They are only expected to repopen in the fourth quarter - that's from October 1st that will coincide with plans to open the country according to PM Prayuth Chan-o-cha's 120 day plan.

The business media also noted that 63% of hotels that are open right now are not even making 10% of revenues compared to pre-pandemic income in 2019.

Only 18% have 50% of revenue compared to then.

These are mostly in the "hospitel" scheme that has seen a 30% occupancy bucking the trend of most THA hotels.

I for one, feel sorry for the devastated tourism industry over all... but It would be a safe bet to add July August September and October to the grim statistics, as non of the wishful number of visitors anticipated to come will come...

Even ASQ's probably tanked as people delayed travel/return in favor of the sandbox.

start to vaccinate expats and people who are retired here. They can and will travel across the country, but the government is giving all kind of hurdles everytime to discourage these vaccinations, as they discourage more things as Civil Union Bill, easier visa restrictions and even the requirements for the Phuket Sandbox

These are some very low figures... Imagine the level of debts most hotels must have accumulated by now... Even when things reopen, it will be a very long road of recovery.

My Thai wife finally got an inoculation appointment... August 5th. Mind you, that is a date, no shot yet.

How do they expect to "open the kingdom" with only about 6% vaccination?

At the moment only 38% of hotels nationwide are operating normally with 41% operating in some capacity and 20% closed temporarily.

So what happened to the other 1%?

I guess Thailand's hotels are looking at the governments plans and thinking it's like trying to open a tin of corned beef with a spoon after losing the key

The people in the highest places of the government of Thailand should resign and miss handled everything when it comes to the virus they asked foreigners to register on the website only to find out there’s no vaccine and the appointment was canceled the thai people should wake up  blaming everybody else look in the mirror and ask what has the government done for me 0TIT

The economic devastation is directly on the tiny shoulders of Prayuth, and Anutin. Direct responsibility.

Had they fulfilled their responsibilities back in December, with the Samut outbreak, there would likely have been no 2nd wave, which likley lead directly to the 3rd wave.

We all know where the blame lies. Lives are being impacted and they barely care. This much is evident from the massive failure of their Vax rollout, and their selection of the cheapest and lowest quality Vax available.

Woe is Thailand with the dinosaur in charge. Change must happen. And it cannot come soon enough.

Power to the youth.

Most of the people I know travel to Spain , Portugal  and Greece  instead of SE Asia. We are tired of the isolation and the borders inside EU are now opening up.  Good for us and our health.

Thailand?  Maybe next year.

the more solvent will survive but the smaller may not.  which will mean the Marriot, Hiltons, ect.  there will be less competition and the prices will rise thus making Thailand an even less attractive bet.  sad.

Who would buy when there is no business?

If only they would have read ThaiVisa, they could have anticipated this very obvious outcome and planned around it.
