PHUKET: Pornthep Channarong, the corporal with the Phuket Provincial Police who was drunk off-duty when he shot 25-year-old noodle vendor Aroon Thongplab in the stomach on Bangla Rd in Patong in February, has entered a plea of not guilty and will fight the charges against him in court.

Mr Aroon was shot in the stomach by Pornthep just before 6am on Feb 23 while he was walking along the Bangla Rd after collecting a noodle bowl from a customer.

In less than 24 hours Pornthep was quickly stripped of his rank and discharged from the Royal Thai Police, and now faces charges of attempted murder, carring a firearm in a public area without necessary reason, and firing a weapon in a public area.

“While the criminal case continues, in terms of a civil case, I have asked for B15 million. in compensation for his paralysis, to cover the cost for living in the future, and the cost of losing opportunity and income,” Mr Kerdphol said.

“I do not know whether the police can pay that big amount,” he added.

Amazing.  He must have qualified immunity, even if he's drunk and apparently off duty according to what he was wearing.

For pleading not guilty I hope he gets to serve the whole sentence he will surely get.

Absolutely. But when you think of Red Bull and Koh Tao then you know it's broken. Surprised they have not tried to pin the blame on a farang or Burmese (yet) ...

If he can buy his way out of cold bloodedly shooting someone in the street while drunk captured for all to see on CCTV  then you know Thailands justice system is broken.

Compensation to the family should not buy him out of a long jail term.

well it definitely looks like they are going to give it a good go. This story triggered a memory of the Thai policeman that murdered 2 Brit packpackers in Kanchanaburi (also whilst drunk I believe). he did get 2 life sentences which the judge then 'corrected' to one life sentence... would be very interested to know how much time he actually did serve... if anyone knows...?

And if I'm not wrong he worked as licensed tourist guide in Phuket for a while before they arrested him. TAT please explain me again how that works? I will tell you he probably entered a Wat for a while and got a new name and applied with that name. Met once met a tourist guide like this, two licenses under his real and monk name.

Regarding this scumbag, maybe put some of his superiors and connections in jail as well.

They actually did try and blame foreigners for the shooting.

The reason he pulled out his gun and started shooting, was because he wanted "foreigners"  to stop arguing. ????
