The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) reports that the exodus of workers from sealed construction sites in Bangkok has led to an increase in COVID-19 infections in 32 provinces, mostly in the Northeast.

CCSA assistant spokeswoman, Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan, said on Thursday that 129 people arriving from Greater Bangkok had tested positive for the novel coronavirus this week.

By far the largest number was in the Northeast, where 84 infections were reported in 12 provinces among people arriving from the capital. Twenty-three cases were found in 9 central provinces and there were 20 cases among people arriving in 6 Northern provinces. Two others went to Phuket in the South.

Getting harder and harder to find a province in Thailand without daily COVID cases. Down to just 3 provinces with no new cases as of today's report (the dark green sections in the graph below):

In a tweet this afternoon, blogger Richard Barrow summarized a BKK Post report saying "the government said today that existing measures are 'adequate' to battle rising Covid toll".

Yet during today's English language news briefing, government spokeswoman Lertsithichai said:

"The situation in Thailand continues to be worrying. And therefore, Bangkok continues to be the epicenter of local transmissions where new infections continue to surpass the numbers of recoveries.

"And therefore, the CCSA has requested authorities to address this problem immediately by both increasing bed capacities and by adopting new quarantine measures within the problem communities. These will be called community isolation measures. And the Bangkok governor will be discussing the details with the authorities concerned to address this problem, and to fine tune some standard operational procedures."

"And also, in an effort to help address the increasing number of patients, the CCSA has asked physicians from all over the country... We have now 144 physicians who are experts in fields of not only general practitioners but also respiratory systems and those who are experts in intensive care. They will come from all over the country to help Bangkok manage and cope with the increasing number of patients. And we welcome this help and support from all of the provinces."

Community isolation. I suppose sealing off parts of bangkok where cases are prevalent?

I suspect that might make people run for the outer provinces a la construction camp closures.

Unfortunately, the article is behind a paywall.

Here's a good description of the vaccine type. It's based on a new spike technology called Hexapro developed by Jason McLellan's lab at the University of Texas. He was also instrumental in developing the spike mRNA technologies used by Moderna and Pfizer.

Hexapro is a new and improved technology that his team wants to share with the world.  The vaccine is also designed to be easily and cheaply manufactured anywhere. More about the vaccine from U Texas

I can't imagine Pfizer or Moderna are very happy about this.

`

Sorry about the firewall.  I was able to read the article and gave them nowt.

PS - If the construction sites were "sealed" then how could there have been an exodus of those workers... Oh ya, "sealed" after many had already scattered....

Now you know what watching a train wreck in slow motion means. As 'still confident' engineer Prayut drives the engine off a cliff.

Couple of quotes from this latest article, looks like 10,000 a day new infections is ok according to Prayut:

COVID-19 in Thailand expected to worsen next week, CCSA says

Gen. Nattaphon Narkphanich, secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC) and director of the operations centre of the CCSA, said today (Friday) that the CCSA predicts an increase in the rate of new COVID-19 infections next week, so vaccinations must be accelerated.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is already concerned about the impacts of the existing measures.

He is optimistic that the situation is under control, even if new daily infections reach 10,000, while emphasizing that the government has increased hospital beds, in both general and field hospitals and in “hospitels”, and has introduced a home isolation program for asymptomatic cases.

So they predict an increase in infections next week. How insightful of them.

here’s another prediction, the following week they will rise yet again. It’s a VIRUS, it doesn’t get tired and stop for a rest, it keeps going so long as it can find hosts.

And now we learn who the supposed "expert" doctors being sent from various provinces to Bangkok to help with the crush of COVID cases really are -- green new medical school graduates.

"Thailand’s Public Health Ministry has mobilized newly-graduated doctors from several provinces to help take care of COVID-19 patients, amid a shortage of medical personnel in Bangkok.

Deputy permanent secretary for Public Health, Dr. Thongchai Kiratihatthayakon, said health authorities have begun the urgent training of 144 doctors around the country, before deploying them to support the battle against COVID-19 in Bangkok. The graduate doctors have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and will receive remuneration and allowances according to ministerial regulations.

He said more medical personnel are needed to look after patients as Siriraj, Ramathibodi, Vajira, Thammasat University hospitals, and the field hospital at Mongkutwattana Hospital, plan to increase the number of ICU beds for patients with severe symptoms."

Already strained credibility now flying out the window...

Migrant workers ask Thai government for assistance during the pandemic

With Covid-19 affecting many migrant communities in Thailand, Cambodian workers are now asking the Thai government for help. A petition calling for assistance during the pandemic to help with providing food, financial support and medical services was submitted this week to the Thai Ministry of Labour and Parliament.

“The Thai authorities said that they will solve the problem as requested by the Cambodian workers but it will take some time before they can issue a response.”

I wonder if they have thought that case number through.

if 2k daily cases result in about 50 daily deaths, as they now are. 10 k daily cases will result in 250 deaths per day. Give or take.

that seems a high number to just brush off and it doesn’t just stop there either.

So true….and so sad.

these will be a multiple factor of road deaths though, at what point is there a public out cry? I don’t think it’s going to be a particularly calm period through to the end of the year.

I bet no one has told the provincial health officer whether they are delta or not. That’s best kept under wraps.

A doctor has shared pictures of people camping outside a hospital in hopes of getting a bed for COVID-19 treatment.

Thiravat Hemachudha, neurologist and director of the Health Science Centre of Emerging Diseases at Chulalongkorn University, on Thursday night shared images of people camping outside the Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok. “At least these people who cannot get access to hospital’s treatment should be provided with favipiravir to take at home,” Thiravat wrote, referring to antiviral medication used to treat COVID-19 patients. ...

The post was shared more than 1,700 times on Facebook with many comments expressing their bitterness toward the government while others asked the doctor about medication or herbs they can use to treat coronavirus at home.  Despite the government ensuring that there are enough beds for “severely affected” patients during the third-wave outbreak, there have been many complaints from people who said that they couldn’t find a bed at hospitals for themselves or their loved ones.

This is where it all starts to fall apart.

I'd be considering an exit strategy from Thailand for a while.  At least considering it.  Nobody can get into everyone's individual circumstances but when the health care system starts to collapse, and if you need it, you are S.O.L.

When things go sideways, and this is true of any country not just Thailand, you will always be a dog out in the rain.

Come to hospital for help. Not even given a bit of meds and some advice.

Well when there are no doctors to provide such a service it is inevitable.

Safe to say if you get ill in Bangkok you are going to have a very serious problem indeed, covid or not.

Perhaps, but they will avoid doing that at pretty much all costs. Only if the case load becomes undeniable really.

the risky thing is if you are halfway through your “holiday”. There are no ground rules established for that eventuality as far as I know.

When the average age of death from Covid is 82 (at least in the UK), I would suggest that age is very relevant here.    If the average age of death from this was 20 I would actually be on your side here.

I hope someone who thinks like you infects your parents or grand parents, whoever is 82 years old, or they just have an accident and cannot get hospital care because hospitals are full and they die. Then maybe you'll start thinking

After weeks of hanging around the 2,000 mark it looks like its going parabolic now and the government scientists are still talking about the delta is not yet even officially the dominant strain. It is likely to breeze through 10,000 in a few days and could easily power on up to 20,000 to 30,000.  Cases in the UK went from 4,800 a day at the end of May to 25,700 at the end of June and they have fully vaccinated 50% of the population with fairly reliable vaccines.  Because of the high level of vaccination in the UK hospitalisations and deaths have been at a much lower percentage than last year.  In Thailand, of course, where corruption and nepotism reign supreme people with money and connections have been allowed to jump the queues and leave the vulnerable and foreigners unvaccinated and vulnerable. In addition the governent did almost nothing in the 18 months it had to prepare for a potentially catastrophic situation. Whereas the UK can now easily handle 30,000 cases a day, Thailand is already at its limite.  The big worry here is that medical staff aare nearly all vaccinated with Sinovac which may give them only minimal protection against delta.  About 60% of all the vaccines given so far are Sinovac.
