Tesco Lotus were acting like $%^&^%&^% by sticking 25 Setang onto an item and keeping the 75 Setang change .

If they did they regularly , they would make a huge profit .

For every thousand customers , they would make and profit 75 000 Satang

It's not the price of the item that causes it.  It is the VAT added to the bill.

Getting the correct change back would actually make the cash register to be correct , at the end of the day .     If Tesco lotus  wont disregard 25 Setang , why should I disregard 75 Setang ?

I'm not overly stingy BUT

If she asked for it (25) she's liable to give the change (75) i dont see any problem asking for it

I put all the coins I receive in my pockets. And at home I take them out of my pockets. And then my girlfriend puts them in jars and whenever she visits her family up country she takes those jars with her. That money is then used for the kids for school, etc.

I understand how you feel, I took a two stop train ride

From Hua Hin With 3 Thai friends, they had a free ride

I was charged 2 baht, my Thai friends luckily chipped

In 50 setang each !

I have complained to the Thai minister of transport,

And written a letter to my MP in Fulham !

Did you expect from me to make my own picture?

I am sure the existing picture is enough to illustrate the concept.

Possible, but to be certain you'd need to know if she was following training (so Tesco are the theives) or she was showing a bit of initiative.

Either way all Tesco have to do is take satang off every price.

Remember, this is CP Group now, and if they take off Satang, it wont be down on the price.

Mole Hill - meet Mountain

I for sure have better things to do with my time than wait for 75 satang, and making some young girls life - working for minimum wage - harder.

Let me know next time you go shopping, I will be waiting outside with a 1 baht coin so you can feel real good about having made some money on the purchase

Stang can’t be spent everywhere. This is the key to understanding here.

1 baht or more can be spent everywhere.

Business gets 1 baht, and gives back a relatively worthless. It has less worth because you cannot spend it everywhere. Bts stations won’t take them for example. Imagine the example moves to 99% of businesses won’t take them. It has less value.

It is actually theft, and that is assuming she gave the change, which she didn’t ha.

I thought most everything is priced including vat?

did op buy any baht per kilo items? I find the stang will hit you because you get unlucky with the weight, or some annoying company adds the stang to the end of an item.

You're out of line.

this guy does not want to pay .25 satang that is due on his bill and gets into a fight w/a minimum wage cashier who is just trying to do her job and I am out of line?

Do you think fighting w/a cashier and not paying .25 satang is a good thing?

Common sense is not a gift. It's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

I am not in the best of moods before having my first coffee , especially when I need to go out to buy the ingredients

me too... but I sure wouldn't take it out on some poor minimum wage cashier... try being kind and you will feel better all day... and night.. better for you and everyone who has to deal with you...

In Superman III, this particular scam takes shape when Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor) receives his first paycheck for $143.80, and a colleague tells him that his paycheck probably includes a half-cent extra due to taxes and other calculations. Because Gus is an inexplicable computer genius, he writes a program for the company’s computer system to gather up all of these fractions of a cent for him, which results as a bonus check for $85,789.90 at the end of the week. Of course, the company’s accountants immediately notice the sudden loss of funds and finger Gus the next day when he nonchalantly drives his new Ferrari to work.

Check the car park at Tesco to see who turns up in an expensive car, they are the ones pocketing the satangs !

25 satang rounded to the closest Baht is 0 Baht, 75 satang rounded to the closest Baht is 1 Baht.

49 satang rounded is 0, and yes you guessed it 51 satang is 1 Baht.

Problem is if it is 0.5  round up or down?  This is why many countries kept 0.5 (Some kept quarters, 0.25) currency coins for rather some time. I remember in Sweden stores had a bowl with "Satangs" and a sign say if you need your "Satang" change pick it your self from the bowl.

1 million X 75 Satang is the beginning of Tesco's or other Big C's etc profit......

Who says?? 4 X 25 Satang =  1 Thb... i.e. 240 X 25 Satang = the price of 1 beer Chang in the bar.

The older "yellow" nonferrous 50 and 25 will accept solder . Just in case anyone needs to make something. Just saying.

Just been to a Tesco lotus and my bill came to 60 Baht and 25 Setang

When I get such a bill I fish for 25 stang and if I don't have stangs I give the next higher coin. And I always get the change with the receipt without the need to hold my hand out with anger.

With 7% VAT the amount for small items will carry stang most times. The only way to eliminate it will be to round the number, and the vendors will always round it up.

This was a case of deliberately giving people the wrong change and possibly keeping the access .

   This was attempted theft

You have no way of knowing whether she deliberately attempted to steal 75 satang from you neither do you know whether she was intending to keep any overs in the (electronically monitored and CCTV covered) till.

Its the age old argument of "principal" not the amount involved.

Forget the amount, they wanted you to lose 3 x more than they would.

The question/issue actually would never have arisen if the correct full amount was paid to start with.

Right. He was just being a smartass. Why did he not give Bt61? Just looking for confrontation it seems, and holding up the queue with his petty shenanigans.

So you were deliberately trying to avoid paying your bill in full and, regardless of the pathetically small amount in dispute that you instigated, it sounds like you "attempted theft", to use your words, before she did!

It's ok for you to screw over the cashier but not ok for her to do the same to you?   Where you hoping to save the 25 satang to treat yourself to something nice?

I wish I had so much time on my hands that I could stand in a store waiting for 75 Setang, the manager to resolve the issue and then still have enough time to post about it on the net...

I think I now understand why they don't want to waste vaccinations on us...

You were doing exactly the same for an even smaller amount, 25 satang!

Maybe Tesco had reduced the price by 75 satang!
