Thailand on Friday (July 9) reported 9,276 new COVID-19 cases and 72 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

● 8,998 new infections

● 278 prison / prison infections

Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 317,506 with 2,534 deaths.

(Total infections since April 1: 288,643)

The news comes as Thailand's health ministry said on Thursday it had proposed new travel curbs and tighter restrictions in high-risk areas to contain COVID-19 cases, as the country reported a daily record of 75 deaths from the coronavirus.

For the third day in a row, Thailand’s COVID pandemic on Friday set a new record for daily cases reporting 9,276 for the day, along with 72 deaths, as the country considers reimposing restrictions on businesses and travel at least in Bangkok and surrounding areas.

With the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus surging around the country, a recent prediction that Thailand’s daily COVID new cases count could soon hit 10,000 per day suddenly is on the verge of happening, with Friday’s new cases triple that of daily numbers from just three weeks ago.

Friday’s new cases tally blew past Thailand’s prior records for daily new COVID cases, including the prior single-day records of 7,058 from Thursday and 6,519 the day before that. And some doctors have warned the country is only officially reporting a portion of the likely true COVID case count.

The 72 new COVID deaths reported Friday was the country’s second highest total ever, surpassed only by the 75 deaths reported the day before. Since the start of the pandemic, Thailand has now reported 317,506 cases and 2,534 deaths.

The record-breaking new cases tally Friday – which included 8,998 cases among the general population and 278 among prisoners – came as the government was set to announce new restrictions aimed at slowing the startlingly rapid advance of the virus.

In addition to the new high for daily COVID cases, Thailand also is likely later in the day to report a new record for its number of hospitalized COVID patients, with that number expected to soar past 70,000, including more than 2,500 in critical condition.

Very often the health experts are accused of fear mongering and creating panic by modeling potential high numbers unless steps are taken, in this case they have all underestimated how quickly this would take over Thailand.

What half hearted measures are we going to see that will address the exponential spread of the virus? A two week soft lockdown will have little impact, only strict measures will have any hope of denting the curve and give enough time for the health service to catch up.

Its not only Bangkok and surrounding Provinces now, its spread throughout Thailand and unless measures are taken throughout then its possible the health service will get stretched throughout Thailand and a complete collapse, a nightmare scenario.

Rolling 7 day average (up to 7th July only) which includes prison cases and bar chart of community cases.

What you have to remember here is that the new daily infections almost certainly does not relate to increased testing (testing has decreased if anything according to many news reports and anecdotal evedience). These numbers mean a MUCH higher infection rate than the already high 10% infection rate shown previously.

Assuming 30,000 tests per day then you could be looking at a 30% infection rate...worse is that could easily translate to 20% across the entire population.

Chonburi Public Health Office has just announced they have 317 new cases. Most new cases are in Chonburi City (76), Bang Lamung/Pattaya (51), and Si Racha (73). The total cases so far is now 10,892 with 3,788 remaining in care #Thailand

You spelt exponentialed incorrectly.

The weekly trendline compiled by me from the official daily announced numbers of community cases into weekly totals is showing the sharp increase continuing unabated.

1) I am assuming that hospital walk-in cases are a large component of the total new cases, which tells us that even higher numbers are coming soon.

2) The difference between yesterday’s discharges and admissions were about 5,000, meaning that the supposedly full system absorbed 5,000 patients.

Completely out of control. No way back now. Even a month full and strict lockdown may have little impact. This virus is transmitted first by air and second on surfaces. I'm not sure the idiots at the top realise this and fairly sure many Thais don't. I am wearing two masks. This is unravelling very fast.

Camping out in the pouring rain last night to get tested this morning.

There’s something seriously wrong with the system when people feel the need to queue up all night in the rain in order to get a free Covid-19 test. Imagine the number of cases we would have if mass testing was freely available. Something urgently needs to be done about this.

Many people are camping out overnight hoping to get a covid test at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat in the morning. Some are sitting in the rain because there’s not enough shelters. The government is being criticised for making it difficult to get tested.

The number of cases isn't the number of admissions. You don't know what the number of admissions are so you don't know what you are talking about.

Whatever your definition of exponential is, that 7 day rolling average chart must be at least getting close to it.

Is there some part of “I am assuming that hospital walk-in cases are a large component of the total new cases” that you didn’t understand?

We’ll get the actual hospital admissions numbers later today. It is going to be a big number.

Some good news for expats who are 75+ and who are still trying to get vaccinated. A Facebook friend posted to say that he was able to get a walk-in vaccination at Bang Sue Grand Station #Bangkok. Someone else told me that Patong Hospital in #Phuket was also accepting walk-ins

I did predict in an earlier post here on TVF when a so called professor said that we could see 10,000 infections per day by the end of the year, and I replied that it could be by end of the month, but now I will have to revise my figures to say by tomorrow.

Now if that professor is so clever NOT, think about the rest running this country, maybe I should throw it out there, i.e. that we could reach NATURAL herd immunity by years end because we have no vaccines, and I ain't no professor.

I haven’t seen it but I assume it will be a “better than nothing” argument. Which has some merit, although one suspects that there will be no follow up booster shot of an mRNA vaccine.

I am sorry that you are irritated by the data.

Yesterday, you claimed that the hospital system was full, but today, thousands more got into the system.

Rather than insulting me, perhaps you could address the contradiction.

Understanding capacity limits of the Thai hospital system is fairly useful at this point.

Strange. I used to check the latest numbers each morning in "Bangkok Post" and "The Thaiger", but since numbers have climbed above 7,000/day those news have gone. Censorship?
