BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s government will set up a committee to study the use of green chiretta (Andrographis paniculata) extracts to treat COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said he has instructed authorities to set up the committee, to be headed by Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. It will coordinate studies on the safety and efficacy of green chiretta extracts in COVID-19 patients, as well as draft a strategic plan to promote Thai traditional medicine in general.

The decision was taken in response to a proposal from Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, who urged the government to scale up the use of traditional medicines in mild COVID-19 cases amid the vaccine shortage.

His proposal came with evidence showing the Department of Corrections’ success in treating 12,376 inmates, who were infected with COVID-19, with green chiretta extracts. The Department of Corrections now plans to produce about 50 million capsules of the herbal medicine in the next four months, which it aims to prescribe to about 50% of the prison population.

Yeh that will work. Early treatment has already proven to be successful in many parts of the world and governments won't talk about it, nor the main stream news. Unfortunately Thailand is acting same same as the West. Come to hospital if you have trouble breathing and we'll help you die. We'll stick you on a cardboard bed and treat you with paracetamol. Obviously these gov'ts are not concerned about our health.

So how did you find about "it"?

Not a bad idea maybe a year or so late. Heres another idea read some of the studies that have already been done on other anti parasitic drugs, you know the one I'm talking about, the debunkers of it like to say the studies are not scientific enough for them so they refuse to look.

You can research covid treatments. One can believe what they wish. Personally I fee that gov'ts and, their paid, health departments have done the public a huge disservice.

Good to see they have a large pool of candidates to try this on - prison inmates!

Hopefully, they have some valid medical / scientists on the committee to help them out.  Trying to make the AZ vaccine  (when they've never done this before) has gone so well.

Agree, 3,000.

But once you go and try to convince others to adopt your belief then you're entering cult-land.

There is a lunatic-fringe element in the regime's public health department, Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, that is pushing this fah talai jone.

Why are they pushing it? Who knows?

Look, do the basic research, then get back to us in a year or two when you have some results. In the meantime stop encouraging people to self-medicate.

I know the regime needs to make it look like they are doing something to combat COVID, but maybe stick to the top three goals and focus on those alone...

1.) Vaccinate

2.) Vaccinate

3.) Vaccinate

To paraphrase James Carville, "It's the VACCINE, stupid.

With all the countless magic remedies and the three home-made vaccines in the pipeline, Thailand's future looks very bright for the next year

The parallels between the actions and inactions of The Bloated Orange One (aka Dear Leader) and this administration are striking. Now it's extended into the alternative therapies.  Remember Hydroxychloroquine? Bleach? UV light?

Is there a Despot's Guide to Indifference and Incompetence During Pandemics that they are reading from?

More jobs for the boys, and funded nicely on doubt.

Europeans in the tropics used to die like flies from malaria. Then a remedy was found to already be in use among pre-Columbian societies from the bark of a South American tree.

I am not encouraging people to self medicate. When I said "that will work", it was sarcasm. Sorry you didn't get it. With regard to early treatment. You think that is not possible? Perhaps you should do some research. Many are being treated early with many kinds of different drugs or vitamins that seem to be working. (meaning less death). Of course if there was a drug treatment then there would not be a vaccine, would there!

With regard to the Vaccine, stupid. Yes thank you and I hope that is correct.

Many medications that were not created to be used as antivirals are being investigated to see if they are useful against the covid virus. Why not chiretta?

and why not Rhino Horn as well??

As you apparently failed to notice I was replying to someone who seemed to believe that because chiretta was being used as an antibacterial, that disqualified it from being used as an anti-viral.

Of course, if you are someone who believes that plants can't have any therapeutic value, then you are clearly unacquainted with their use in the pharmacopeia.

Yes, it would seem many people are completely ignorant of the role plants / herbs etc had and still have in "modern" medicine, and further, at the moment anything is worth considering.
