Thailand reports record high of 17,669 new COVID-19 cases and 165 deaths

Thailand on Thursday (July 29) reported 17,669 new COVID-19 cases and 165 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

● 17,408 new infections
● 261 prison / prison infections

Thursday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 561,030 with 4,562 deaths. 

(Total infections since April 1: 532,167)

The news comes as US Senator Tammy Duckworth revealed last night that the US government planned to provide 2.5 million doses of vaccine to Thailand. 

 

The Thai-American lawmaker told a webinar on Thai-US relations on 27 July that as part of the Biden Administration’s pledge to provide vaccines to developing countries, Thailand would receive 2.5 million. The seminar was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ International Studies Center, East West Center in Washington DC and the Royal Thai Embassy.

Thailand on Thursday reported 17,669 new COVID cases and 165 new deaths, setting new record highs for both and passing the 17,000+ new cases mark for the first time. It was the country’s second consecutive day of record case highs and the fifth daily record among the past seven days.

 

Thursday’s 17,669 new cases marked a 1,136 case increase from the 16,533 cases reported Wednesday, as daily cases in Thailand have rocketed upward from the 10,000 range in mid-July. Thursday’s 165 new deaths far surpassed the country’s prior daily COVID deaths record of 141 from July 17.

 

Thursday’s new case count included 17,408 among the general public and 261 from Thailand’s prisons. Thailand has now totaled 561,030 COVID cases and 4,562 COVID deaths since the start of the pandemic in January 2020, though most of those have occurred just since this April.

 

What Thursday's report did NOT include was any substantial number of more than 3,000 positive COVID cases first reported nearly a week ago at a Saha Farms chicken processing plant in the Phetchabun province. Those cases have never yet been publicly reported in the government's daily cases tally, raising questions about the accuracy and completeness of that reporting.

 

Now in the worst of a so-called third wave that began in April, Thailand’s COVID outbreak has spread lately from its original center in Bangkok and several adjoining provinces to the entire nation. All or almost all of Thailand’s 77 provinces lately have been reporting new COVID cases on a daily basis.

 

Health experts said the rising COVID case and death tolls in Thailand have been driven by the highly contagious Delta (India) variant of the coronavirus that’s now become dominant in the country. Its toll has been worsened by Thailand’s lagging COVID vaccination program that has only fully vaccinated about 5 percent of the population after months of effort, partly due to limited supplies of government procured vaccines.

 

The country’s health care system has been brought to the breaking point by the worsening pandemic. Total COVID hospitalizations have almost doubled in the past two-plus weeks, and the share of those in critical condition has almost doubled in the past month.

 

On Thursday, Thailand once again reported a new record high for active COVID cases hospitalized (185,976), as well as new record highs for critical patients (4,511 / +186) and the share of those on ventilators (1,001 / +6).

The following is a recap of where Thailand’s COVID status ended on Wednesday, with a long list of shattered records:

 --Across the country on Wednesday, 34 of Thailand’s 77 provinces, five fewer than Tuesday, reported more than 100 new COVID cases. Three of those provinces topped the 1,000+ new case mark for the day: Bangkok with 3,997, Samut Sakhon with 1,147 and Samut Prakan with 1,088.

 

--Bangkok province’s record new cases tally Wednesday shattered the province’s prior high of 3,191 set on July 10. Separately, the government said 59 percent of Bangkok residents had received their first COVID vaccination shot, but only 13.2 percent their full vaccination second shot, as of Tuesday.

 

--On Friday, 1.5 million Pfizer vaccine doses donated by the United States to Thailand are slated to arrive to Bangkok. And, Thai-American U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth reportedly told a webinar session that the Biden Administration plans to provide about 2.5 million doses, which reportedly means another 1 million doses will be added in the future.

 

--The Thai police are said to be searching for those who stole the vaccine appointment information in a mobile telephone company’s registration database and then offered to sell the stolen vaccine appointments for 500 to 1,000 baht apiece. One Thai news report said True Corp. was the mobile company involved.

 

--For foreign nationals, the government’s Bang Sue Central Vaccination Center in Bangkok will continue to allow limited walk-in vaccinations for those age 75 and above living in Bangkok and five adjoining provinces at least through the end of the month. Visitors, though, reported the staff there aren’t enforcing the residency requirement with any kind of documentation, just a verbal statement.

 

--Foreign nationals age 60 and above who live in those same six provinces (and perhaps beyond) can still pre-register for Bang Sue appointments. And, starting in early August, a government spokesman said vaccinations at Bang Sue will be expanded to foreign nationals under age 60, but offered no further specifics. Prayut’s crystal ball needed polishing yesterday, in the morning he said the worst would be over in 2, 3 or 4 weeks but by the evening that had already changed to 4 – 6 weeks time, giving himself some wiggle room. Still better than Anutin's prediction that it would be all normal in 2 to 3 weeks time back in late April.

 

Antigen rapid tests now being used extensively in Thailand and another 1 million being donated by Switzerland. Are the official positives from those tests being added to Thailand’s covid totals is a question many are asking. It was stated that a positive test from an antigen would then require a PCR to confirm but it appears this in not actually filtering through leaving the official numbers again incomplete especially when we see the overflowing hospitals and rising deaths at home.

The increase is more than likely not including the rapid antigen tests completed.  My concern at this point is how many of those 165 deaths have been found at home and then are they testing the deceased to see if it was Covid related.  How many now are isolating at home after testing positive both on the PCR test as well as the Rapid Antigen Test.  I wonder if they have any true numbers of those now that need the follow-up PCR test before they can be admitted to a hospital or location pending an open spot.  This will only add to the delays in treatment and is worrisome as well.  This government has now decided to medicate those at home with Favipiravir, and the Jones capsules.  Yet the good PM believes in 3 to 4 weeks this will have possibly run its course and Anutin believes that starting next month they will vaccinate 1 million a day.   To which I ask, With what vaccines, and how will the numbers drop in the Good PM's view.

This shows just how this is spreading in Chonburi and shows the deaths are rising there as well.  Some yesterday questioned whether or not these numbers from factory workers or construction sites and if so they could continue their lives as normal.  Only a foolish person would ignore the numbers and still expect to continue their daily routine without altering it at least a little bit.

Yet you still got the barflies defending the underground bars with they have done nothing wrong. Some people really have blinders on. Its getting worse and worse and these people are just helping the spread. Such irresponsible people should be deported if they are caught twice (repeat offenders)

Deputy chair of the senate committee on public health reckons 400,000-500,000 asymptomatic in BKK. Maybe but without propper mass testing it's hard to gauge. Even if this is too high by a factor of 10 it would still be 40-50,000 and this is only BKK.

Last night Prayut walked out of a press conference when asked by a British journalist about testing numbers and vaccines. I don't have vision of this but if anyone does please share.

Yesterday evening slight fever, headache nose full and sniffing no energy at all even skipped my training. I was worried a bit that this might be a prelude to more. Thankfully after going to bed early i feel good again.

 

I was actually worried while normally I don't care if i have a day like that it can happen. This puts people on edge too.

Pattaya/Banglamung 228 I believe that is a new high and the highest in Chonburi.

These numbers here may seem not that large if you just look at each day.  Add them up and it is in the thousands just over the past few weeks.  

Where are they?  I do not know but it seems there are many ambulances driving around the city.

I have also seen a few pull up to condos, the occupants getting out in full PPE waiting at the van for someone to come out.

Yes they are you see that in the newspapers. Sure Thais do it too but you can't deport someone from their own country. Thais just get fined. Normally I am all for 1 punishment for all but got a lot less sympathy for foreigners doing this. Its always the same crowd who defends this and disagrees with all restrictions. So if these people get caught twice they should just be deported.

The issue of are antigen test results being counted in the official totals is an interesting one. I too recall the govt. saying anyone who tested positive with an antigen test would have an RT-PCR follow-up.

 

Last night, I believe, there was a Richard Barrow tweet saying that the Phetchabun numbers still had not yet been included in the national totals because they were based on antigen tests... And yet, the government has already said that a positive antigen test qualifies someone for treatment in the Thai public health system even without an RT-PCR test.

Anutin believes that crowd control at Bang Sue is impossible.The second most powerful politician in Thailand admitting defeat at a single vaccination site doesn't shine much of glowing light on his abilities and his ability to show he cares about the situation.

I feel so sad especially for the people in the villages.... Being so easy to influence with rumours, misinformation and panics they must be terrified at this moment. Poor people...

 

I'm really starting to think that the EU and the US need to start paying serious attention to what is happening in SEA, sending vaccines, equipment, experts... They won't have a stable vaccines supply for some time and they don't have the luxury to go on full lockdowns for long periods so they really need help. This is a once-in-a-century situation and any help we send them could help to save many lifes.

Pretty sure a lot of these cases will not be counted or retested. They don't want the numbers to look any higher. Every time new heights are there the PM looks bad and we can't have that can we.

Interestingly Japan with around 40% fully vaccinated is saying it's going to take at least 1 yr. to fully bring under control. Japan is vaccinating mainly with mRNA I think but also AZ. Mr. Empty Head says within 2 months with around 6% fully vaccinated and a large % of these would be double dose Sinovac.

That has been the daily observance here in Bangkok for many weeks now as the case numbers increased.  The condo is now spraying you down upon entering the building, as well as spraying each of the delivered packages that are now being placed on a table out front.  Someone is making a killing selling those designer spray guns for the disinfectant.  The maintenance folks as well as the cleaning crew are spraying the hallways on each floor as well as the stairwells every 2 hours or so.  Woke up this am at 6 am when my door camera alarm went off on my phone just in time to watch through the camera a housekeeper sparing and wiping down my units double doors as well as the door handle.  I like the fact that our juristic unit is taking such care of the condos common spaces, just waiting on that extra bill to come with my share of the costs.

I don't think anyone is free from influence from rumours and misinformation except me of course but that should go without saying, in fact I don't know why I said it if it goes without saying, it just shows what a hypocrite I am.

You mean the sheen and luster has worn off from the veneer coating that was painted on by this government to gloss over the issues at hand regarding covid.  One would think that if they could stop all reporting and such on the Covid spread here they would try harder than they are at suppressing the media and social networks.

It's bad enough they don't wear masks, and go to their secret parties and bar meetups. They also find it necessary to draw immense attention to themselves. For instance, at a new Taco Bell. Still waiting for him to be deported.

1. Vaccination seems the only hope ... yet I don't think they have even ordered sufficient vaccines yet ... I cannot even guess their game plan.

 

2. A lot of upcoming vaxing (with the gifted Pfizer and their own A-Z) will be the re-vaxing of the Sinovac-vaccinated, not new people.

There's often a mile of difference between what they SAY they're going to do, and what they ACTUALLY do....
