OP-ED: England’s unfriendly travel regulations

It seems unbelievable that England has put in place a discriminatory policy that refuses to accept COVID-19 jabs given in countries in Latin American, Africa and South and Southeast Asia. The government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson is showing its dark side by recognising only shots given in a select group of countries.

According to the new rules, anybody visiting England must be fully inoculated with Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, Moderna or Janssen vaccines. These must, however, have been administrated in the US, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea or an EU member country for the recipient to be considered to be fully vaccinated and exempt from quarantine.

Problem is that, those vaccinated with the same brands in Africa, Latin America or, say, in India, to name but a few, will not be considered fully vaccinated and must enter quarantine for 10 days. The new policy is affecting hundreds of Thai families, whose children are going to study in England’s schools and universities. They have to undergo 10 days of quarantine, even though they have been fully vaccinated. Thailand signed an agreement to produce the AstraZeneca vaccine under license last October and has been using it to inoculate its population since early June. As of September 13th, a total of 19.5 million doses of AstraZeneca have been administrated in Thailand.

Think it shows UK doesn't believe a word that Thailand says and how genuine their vaccine certificates are? Maybe I'm missing something, as a UK citizen do i have to do  quarantine when i arrive

  • I think I read somewhere that it had something to do with the lack of clarity of Thailand's figures ????...surely not ????

  • it's a disgrace when you see certain countries taken off the red list in comparison to Thailand   mostly for political reasons rather than numbers

Is there other hoops to jump through when entering Thailand?

Thought so.

It is not only the lack of 'clarity' of the numbers, but also the watering down of the vaccinations.

Thailand cannot be trusted to give the recommended doses of the recommended vaccines.

Then there is the issue of the Thai AZ vaccine. Same formula but they have changed one (or two?) of the ingredients.

Thailand - hub of fakes. (Watches, handbags, T shirts and ?vaccines?)

I am afraid that's what happens when you are proven liars and shysters

I believe some of the neighbours refer to the kingdom as Lieland and that tells you all you need to know about why nations are sceptical of the numbers and vaccination data

Unfriendly? And Thailand’s regs, AND ongoing prejudice toward foreigners in general? In today’s overly prissy climate, UK would not dare to do such a thing based on someone’s race, gender, sexual persuasion etc etc. This is all competency level of certain governments. Look to your ‘leaders’, get over it and get your S together.

Do you have a source for your claim that there are other ingredients used?

According to the AZ statement:

Q: Can I travel with COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca that has been manufactured in Thailand?

A: COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca that is made in Thailand is of the same quality as AstraZeneca's vaccine made in Europe, Korea, Japan, Australia, and elsewhere

I don't think it is anything to do with AZ vaccine per se I think it has much more to do with honesty and clarity both of which are on the endangered list where Thailand is concerned...

no they haven't - these countries including Thailand are on red list, until that changes then it matters not a jot, until Thailand status changes then it doesn't matter what vaccine you have or where you got it

Clear. If Thai officials stupidly declare that they did not intend to inject full doses or in other unapproved areas of the body is one thing.

But the claim that other ingredients are used by AZ Thailand is a damaging claim.

I am currently fighting with the EU authorities for the EU-wide recognition of the AZ vaccine made in Thailand.

Good luck with that and totally understand

but it is not about the vaccine or where you got it - well at least in the UK

If you came to Thailand fully vaccinated in the UK and went home now - it doesn't matter that you got your vaccine in the UK - you still have to quarantine

The World is watching, and know that Thailand cuts corners on many issues, including medical, and renowned for fudging figure's

Thailand is complaining that people have to quarantine if travelling from Thailand to the UK,  But, wait a minute as of today, Thailand expects all travellers visiting Thailand to quarantine for 15 nights no matter what there vaccination status is...

You can't have it all your ways, so get real Thailand....

Because the UK has one of the worst death and infection rates in the world but arrivals from the UK who are fully vaccinated do not need to do hotel or self quarantine..

And equally unbelievable the red tape and quarantine regulations that Thailand imposes on fully vaccinated and tested tourists trying to enter Thailand.

Som nam na.

South East Asia, Latin America, Africa,  most of the countries there  have dodgy Governments and fake goods its no wonder they're not trusted...

UK citizens or permanent residents (along with anybody else) arriving in the UK from a country on the 'Red List' are required to hotel quarantine regardless of their vaccination status.   Hence those from the UK currently doing the Phuket Sandbox (having been fully vaccinated in the UK) will have to hotel quarantine on their return.

China hides their figures and has so far been rewarded for it, maybe Thailand should go the same

..... and all the other countries on the approved list have perfect systems??

School / Uni terms started weeks ago, so no-one traveling now is going back to study, unless they've bunked off for the first 4 weeks.

Plus, prior to going on Red List, kids from Thailand under 18 didn't even have to self-isolate if they could claim to be residing in UK (which would be the case if in full-time education). Plus if they can afford private education in UK, then these families should be able to afford quarantine. It was obvious that Thailand was highly likely to go on red list and in fact amazing that it didn't go before it did.

I feel sorry for them, sure, and UK needs to re-visit its travel restrictions, but boy, so does Thailand.

Thais complaining about discriminatory practices based on nationality? ????

Maybe we could charge you 10x the price of British nationals for your PCR tests as well. You know, even if you work and pay tax in Britain for years, we'll just base it on your ethnicity when you show up at the venue.

Aww, those poor, rich Thai kids not being able to get to England more easily to continue their privileged lifestyles.

Truly heartbreaking.

You need to educate yourself a bit.

UK -

- 1 million tests per day

- 70% plus of the population fully vaccinated

- society opened up, life as normal.

- funded.development of AZ vaccine

- donated FOC vaccines to third world countries (Thailand).

- one of the largest genome sequencing capabilities in the world.

Compare to the basket case of Thailand and what Thailand has done for it's own citizens or contributed in any way to the world medically, scientifically or charitably during this pandemic.

You also need to educate yourself about Thailand's entry requirements.

Britain unfriendly?  Wow, very hard to believe.

WE are indulging in a bit of solipsism here. This is aimed at India and Pakistan, not Thailand.

When is the Next UK government travel announcement?

Hope this is true...Following the update on Friday, September 17 that set out a wholesale update to the UK system by scrapping the traffic-light system, the next Update is expected to be around October 7 or 8.

The Transport secretary told the Transport Select Committee on September 22 that the travel-list reviews would keep to the same Three-weekly timetable as before.....
