BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai authorities are pressing charges against an Israeli tourist who escaped his quarantine hotel in Bangkok and will deport him after legal proceedings are concluded.

Ohad Baruch is currently being held at Thong Lor Station after police apprehended him at a restaurant on Koh Samui on December 22. The Israeli national arrived in Thailand on December 17 under the Test & Go scheme, but left his hotel in Bangkok before his RT-PCR test result was released.

Suphakit Sirilak, director-general of the Department of Medical Sciences, said an earlier test had revealed Baruch was also infected with the Omicron coronavirus variant, despite the Israeli testing negative for COVID-19 on Koh Samui.

The man has since been charged with violating the emergency decree and communicable disease control act. He will be deported under the Immigration Act once the court issues its ruling.

When he gets back homes, I hope no one askes him how his holiday was

  • Of course not, he's been found guilty and already sentenced in the media. Why bother with evidence.   I can't wait to hear his side of what actually happened as soon as he gets back home.

He's had 3 negative tests since the sample from them Negative Samui PCR test was ‘reportedly' transported from Samui to Bangkok (how exactly ?) and then retested and was reported as being Omicron Posi

I have a feeling he will have plenty to say once he's free to do so.

A video of him walking out the front door of the hotel and receiving a Wai from the security guy is hardly worth posting...

I suppose they are right. What if every other fool decided to do a runner ?  If he did have Omicron or Delta or asymptomatique, he’s not allowed to leave like that and potentially spread whatever he’s got.

He should have waited in his hotel for one day.

Now he will most probably be deported and banned from entering Thailand for xx months/years?

What was supposed to be a holiday has turned out to be a nightmare just because he was impatient.

Wonder if he’ll get a harsher sentence for it being omicron..

There’s some deflection and face saving going on I reckon.

The suspect had tested negative on his three latest tests.

It would show that he was not ‘sneakily attempting to escape his Test & Go’....

OR... it would be quite damning IF there was footage of him carrying his baggage out via the car-park entrance !!! - I suspect there is no such footage otherwise we’d have seen it by now.

Do you think he wants to come back for a holiday soon??

impatient ..?..or he had a fake test prior to departure (or paid to have it) and he knew he was infected !

I'm sure he will be telling everyone of just how his treatment, I mean holiday was, sure to not have an impact on the Thai economy.

I've been following this with interest. Maybe I've missed something but I haven't seen one report of WHY he did it! What's the big secret...??? If it has been reported, then apologies but if not, what was the reason?

  • Popular Post

So after allegedly testing positive, what did they do?  Put him on an airplane to Bangkok!

  • Popular Post

What an idiot this man is. Test and go was for just one night - most people would need that anyway to get over their jet lag.

  • Popular Post

What a colossal waste of time, which paints thailand in an extremely poor light.

Just hold a press conference, have him apologize and then let him leave thailand.

Can common-sense prevail here?

I understand the need to "make an example" of someone but does that ever really work?

Hopefully ALL tourists are provided with translated versions of these "Acts", along with a detailed list of punishments.

Walking out the front door?

Maybe he had a positive test..but was sure he was negative due to a self test..or doubted the validity.

Didn't want to get carted off to hospital....so went elsewhere to get retested...without thinking of the implications

Pretty sure  that he would have been given instructions on arrival at the hotel that he couldn't leave until his PCR test had come back negative.

Not much to ask to wait a few hours.

Just intrigued if he had a lot of baggage with him.........

How sure?

Maybe he was given another stack of papers, with rules and regulations.

Just let it go.

Not that I know of.  However, I'm awaiting the book he will write detailing his miraculous escape.  I'm sure a movie is already being planned.  Maybe Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, or Tom Cruise will play the lead role.

<deleted> the idiot should have stayed in his hotel, got the result and been on his way. If he broke the rules and took risks with other peoples lives he should go rot.

Sure he will be glad to be deported never to see Thailand again. The sooner the better
