Portable Aircons any good? And what to look out for?

We had one. Worked fine but very noisy. Unlike a split system the compressor and condenser and fans etc are all mounted in the one unit (like a box window air conditioner), not half it outside.

I gave it away in the end.

Thx.

Noise is not an issue, as it would be place in a shed away from the house and would only run from 7am-7pm!!

Having experience with a portable one 9000 btu and a real (split) aircon 9000 btu .

IMHO they are not worth it . Let me tell you why , the air coming out of it indeed is cooled , and is cooled good . The hot air is coming out of the hose is indeed very warm and can go outside fast , also fine , no problem . Then we go to the issue . The hot air blown out has to be replaced by new air . That new air is coming out from any hot place which is not cooled , and it is a lot of air to be replaced . This means your "cooled" room is constant sucking in large amounts of hot air from outside . This means your 6000 btu , will effectively maybe cool 1500 btu , since all the rest is the same hot air as before .

I do understand that your room is very small and you do not want to have huge investments on a big aircon , but let me propose something like this.

https://www.lazada.co.th/products/condenser-cover-2-9000-astina-i3005133011-s11029785161.html?&search=pdp_same_topselling?spm=a2o4m.pdp_revamp.recommendation_1.3.753b9d241qzjng&mp=1&scm=1007.16389.126158.0&clickTrackInfo=b51bd601-b468-4367-9b0c-6b2682cb53a0__3005133011__11803__trigger2i__224806__0.058__0.058__0.0__0.0__0.0__0.058__2__null__null__null__null__null__null____2500.0__0.32799999999999996__0.0__0__1680.0__108012,141764__null__null__null__3650.16544_3650.16536_955.3632__null__13426__null__0.0__0.0________null__null

This will make your portable aircon in a much more effective aircon . It adapts to the air intake side , which instead of sucking in air in the room , suck the air in the AC , and then is blown out .

Otherwise i would go for something like this .

They are small , cost efficient , much lower BTU , but it also does a hot air and a cold air side .

Sorry for the long links...

Thanks, you gave me food for thought.

I had a look at my portable air con. and note the following:

  1. Cold air comes out the front top vent and circulates to the top inlet at the back. That's fine.
  2. Hot air goes out the mid level exit at the back to exhaust through a pipe and out of the room.
  3. Ambient air from within the room and also, as mentioned, from outside enters bottom inlet at the back.
  4. The ambient air is also air that is being cooled so the air con. is cooling the room and also blowing some of it out the hot air vent.
  5. I should have considered all this when I bought it ????

Those kits from Lazada are the right thing to get but only if they will fit your particular portable unit, also they are expensive bits of plastic.

I feel a diy project coming on.

Re: Room

The room will be a mini of 2x2m with a +/- 2,5m high ceiling.

But that is the size I think it's going to be. Know more when the Solar Installers have been!!

Re: Lazada Link

Thanks but they only reason I don't like the one you posted is because it will VENT all the Hot Air either to my Water Tanks or to the Tanks where my wife keeps her self made fertilizer.

With those portable ones you get a LONG hose and that can put outside (drill a hole on the wall) with that thing it sits on the floor and vents the air out of the back (at ground floor) (this is from looking at the pictures) Please note the level of the room is LOWER then outside (approx 1m lower then the outside ground level)

Another question (but more for the seller) what about the Water Drainage? If it goes in to a tank in the device then you have to regularly empty it!

But thanks for the link, more food for thought!

@sezze for your information, you can make the link show as lon as you like by using the link button in the format bar.

Ridiculous long link

Or just cut the source stuff off the end, then you get a manageable link that still has the product title info in it.  This is the same as both yours:
