$1 Trillion in debt sometime next calendar year.

That's about $50 Billion a year in interest.

The debt and the interest keeps rising, with no end in sight.

I wonder how much of it can be attributed to generous welfare systems that get taken advantage of.

Why don't you leave the man alone and mind your own business? His lifestyle choices  have nothing to do with you!

  • Current annual cost of welfare / social services in Oz is AUD$191.8 billion. Personally I would not define welfare payments as 'generous', it is extremely difficult to live on welfare in Oz. e.g. Age

That's the socialist way, keep spending until you run out of other people's money.

Then create a war to absolve the debt.

Sadly, I agree. Though in the case of Australia....... we're stuffed.

The bung has fallen out of the tinnie and the hang glider has got a tear in the wing.

AUD to THB 20.67 on xe.com. Ouch!

Economically, Australia has been going down the toilet for several years.  The economy is surviving on the credit card.  When that credit gets maxed out, wait and see what happens to the AUD.  It will fall off a cliff.

$1 Trillion debt for a country with only 28 million people, and nothing left to privatize or sell off.

No surplus for the next 10 years should push Australia's credit to the limit.

What a mess successive governments have left for our grandchildren.

As long as I get my pension at 67 I will be happy

Sure, but it may be worth 25% to 30% less as an expat in Thailand, in the years to come. That's the same AUD, but for 30% less baht for it.

It may not afford a decent lifestyle in Thailand in the future.

Some expats may have to move to the village, or move to a cheaper country.  Eg.  Cambodia.

Failed on both accounts.

No. Albo and Labor only had one job. Make themselves rich. They succeeded.

Sadly you are correct. Costello and Howard handed Labor an economy where the debt was zero. The credit card had been paid off.

Debt

Nada

Zilch

Zero.

Then Kevin 07 started spending like a drunken sailor.

The rest is history.

Now we are in debt up to the eyeballs. Inflation increasing, interest rates up.

Hopefully history will repeat itself and Labor will self destruct. Always happens.

You think the Coalition would have done any better?

Howard signed deals with Japan which gave the Japanese 30 years of gas at bargain basement prices, with no adjustment for inflation.

The Lyons conservative government introduced negative gearing in 1936. The Howard government brought in the capital gains tax discount. Morrison cut taxes on the rich. All contribute to the current wealth inequity in Australia.

OTOH, the minority Deakin government with Labor support introduced the age pension. The Chifley Labor government brought in the PBS, without which Australians would be paying American prices for medications.

Whitlam forced Medibank through a joint sitting of Parliament. Fraser dismantled it. The Hawke government rebranded it as Medicare.

Don't try to tell me the Coalition would be better at governance, or improving the lives of the average Australian, because that is utter BS.

Yes, but Morrison was no angel. Giving handouts to the top end of town, particularly around covid time.

I'd like to know how many politicians made money on the Qantas bail out?

He didn't.

That's just in your mind.

Both major political parties are as bad as each other.

No wonder One Nation is polling well. Pauline will probably end up getting every protest vote across the country.

All she has to do is sit back and let Labor and Liberal continue to lie to the Australian public and she will continue to gain in popularity.

Maybe, just maybe, the Australian public have had enough of the two party system.

Never learn hey! But the worst element showing here is the ignorance of some members knowledge of political reality . ( I watched question time from Parliament yesterday on ABC, Libs leader Susan Ley, they can't be serious calling that an opposition !) KH is an obvious contender for No1 dunce but surprised some others close behind. 🤔

Wrong. I was shelling out anywhere between $30 K and $50K a year in taxes.

I do suck on the teat of the Australian taxpayer now, I've earned it.

The government are mismanagers.

Let's look at the Brittany Higgins Fiasco.

She enters the workplace after dark, drunk, with a companion.

She has sex in an office, her sex partner leaves the workplace. Security guards find Britney naked, asleep on the sofa, security cover her up, leave the office, letting her sleep.

If it was me, or any male, we would have been fired, probably unable to find future employment.

She's awarded millions of dollars 💲💲💲💲💰

Let's not forget that assault occurred in 2019, during the Morrison government's tenure.

You seem to forget a judge determined on balance of probabilities Higgins was raped. You are implying it was consensual.

Bruce Lehrmann is charged with two counts of rape in Toowoomba. How much smoke do you need before you'll admit there's a fire?
